AJ McCarron Should Start

AJ McCarron just proved why he should start for the Cincinnati Bengals without taking a snap. He is a leader. After today's practice, McCarron came to Andy Dalton's defense. "I wish people in this city would back him and go with it. Listen, I think I'm a great quarterback and I think he's an unbelievable quarterback...he's our quarterback."

The Bengals short-comings so far this season have not only been on the field, but also in the locker room. The frustration is evident. I firmly believe that the Bengals can turn this around, especially given their relatively easy schedule, but it has to start internally. The loss of Andrew Whitworth is obvious, not just on the field, but in the locker room. The offense lacks a vocal leader; someone to challenge their teammates when they're under-performing and someone to encourage them when they make a mistake.

Andy Dalton, until the first two games this season, has been a reliable starting quarterback. But he lacks that intangible ability to be the leader on offense. A.J. Green is more of a leader by example and no other player on offense, other than maybe Clint Boling, has enough skin in the game to be the leader this offense needs. AJ McCarron can be that guy. What he may lack in skill, he makes up for in grit, determination and leadership.

If Dalton and the offense continue to struggle going into the bye week, I think you will see a changing of the guard in Cincinnati.
