Most fans were probably looking for more of a shake up in the coaching department this offseason.
Still, Marvin Lewis has brought a fair bit of change in his coaching staff for next season.
The biggest addition was Teryl Austin replacing Paul Guenther at defensive coordinator. This is the first real outside hire at the position since Mike Zimmer joined the team.
Guenther did a fine job, but this defense could really benefit from a fresh voice. Austin has also vowed to build his system around the players strengths, and he wants to be more aggressive.
Lewis also brought on Frank Pollack to replace Paul Alexander as the team’s new offensive line coach. Alexander has been with the team for over 20 years, and the offensive lines steady regression over the past few years meant it was time for a change. Pollack comes from Dallas where he coached one of the best offensive lines in the NFL.
The Bengals also brought in Bob Bicknell up from Baylor. He has been a well traveled coach though with plenty of experience around the league. His most noteworthy stop was with the Eagles with Chip Kelly. He helped turn Desean Jackson into an absolute unstoppable force, and the team is hoping he can do the same with John Ross next season.
While most of Bengaldom wanted to see a change at head coach, it is good seeing a major shakeup to Lewis’ staff. He wants to take the Bengals to the next level, and he’s making the kind of changes that will hopefully make it happen.
