The Bengals are sitting at 5-4 following Sunday’s horrific loss to the Saints.
Their last four games have shown us the vulnerabilities they have on both sides of the ball, and also that they are still snake-bitten when playing the Steelers and on primetime. In fairness, the injury bug has hit them pretty hard recently and there is still plenty of time for them to right the ship.
The main question remains to be whether the Bengals can reach the postseason. Prior to Week 10, the Bengals are currently slotted in the sixth seed in the playoff race. The Chargers are currently ahead of the Bengals at 7-2.
The other teams currently in sight of a Wild Card spot include the Dolphins (5-5), Titans (5-4) and Colts (4-5). You may scoff at the idea of a 4-5 team competing for the playoffs, but we’ve seen teams make big turnarounds in seasons before. We have already seen the Texans start 0-3 and they’ve since gone on to win five straight games.
The Bengals also have a pretty easy schedule the second half of the season. They still have two games against the Browns who just imploded their coaching staff, a game against the Broncos, and they will be hosting the Raiders, who have seemingly blown up any chance of success this season. They also play the Ravens today , who they almost always play well against.
The real tests in the second half of the season come against the Chargers and the Steelers. Those will be the Bengals’ last chances before the playoffs to prove they can actually compete with contenders, and winning at least one of those games will improve the Bengals’ chances dramatically if they come out on top against their weaker opponents.
The route to 9-7 is there, though for the Bengals, and that record typically gets the job done in terms of clinching the last spot in the playoffs. But tiebreakers and other factors will make it close.
Will the Bengals make the playoffs?
