Andre Smith admitted the blast of 30-degree weather when he emerged from the Paul Brown Stadium tunnel for Thursday morning’s practice on the game field took his breath away. Smith (6-4, 325), a 10th-year veteran, originally was the Bengals’ first-round draft pick (sixth overall) out of Alabama in 2009 and spent eight of his previous nine NFL seasons with Cincinnati. He played with the team from 2009-15, then spent one season with the Minnesota Vikings in ’16 before returning to Cincinnati for ’17. Smith had signed with Arizona as an unrestricted free agent in March, and played in eight of the Cardinals’ first 11 games before being waived on Monday.

The Steelers and Browns have defected from the old guard NFL to help form the division in the first year of the league’s merger with the American Football League, but it is the upstart Bengals in just their third season of life from the insurgent AFL that are causing all the commotion.

Broncos try to extend late surge against reeling Bengals
Everybody will find out about Driskel on Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium when he makes his first career start against the Denver Broncos (5-6), a matchup of teams headed in opposite directions as the final month of the season approaches.
