Could the Patriots actually be interested in AJ McCarron?
WEEI’s Kirk Minihane is reporting the Patriots have made an offer to now-former Bengals backup quarterback AJ McCarron.
Patriots have made a contract offer to A.J. McCarron, per source.

A McCarron to the Patriots rumor was also circulated, though with even less details, last night by Benjamin Allbright.
McCarron is one of the best remaining quarterbacks on the free agent market. He said he was looking for an opportunity to start, which he will not receive in the near future with the Patriots, but, the starting jobs are mostly filled at this point. Being Tom Brady’s backup isn’t a bad job, but it’s just not what McCarron has said he wanted, which is an opportunity to compete for a starting role.
Here’s a look at the quarterback moves so far in free agency:
- Sam Bradford to the Arizona Cardinals.
- Mike Glennon to the Cardinals.
- Kirk Cousins to the Minnesota Vikings.
- Case Keenum to the Denver Broncos.
- Teddy Bridgewater to the NY Jets
- Josh McCown to the Jets.
- Chase Daniel to the Bears.
- Tyrod Taylor to the Cleveland Browns
- Ryan Fitzpatrick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
McCarron waits and the wait is likely getting tiring for the quarterback. Maybe if he goes to New England he can get traded down the line to another team as the Patriots make a lot of moves. The Patriots traded quarterbacks Jimmy Garoppolo to the 49ers and Jacoby Brissett to the Colts in the last year.
If McCarron doesn’t have any offers to come start for a team, maybe he will land with the Patriots. But, he’s likely waiting just a little longer to see if another suitor will come calling with a more promising offer.
