Could Hurricanes kicker Michael Badgley go camping with the Bengals?

Badgley could be a good “camp body” but likely won’t provide much competition to an average veteran like Randy Bullock

Mike Badgley was a four-year starter for the Miami Hurricanes, and named first team all-ACC this past season after making 17 of 23 field goal attempts and 45 of 46 extra points. Looking at accuracy, his senior season was actually the worst collegiate season for Badgley, but still netted him the all-conference award. He successfully made five field goals in a game twice as a sophomore, with one of those kicks being an overtime game-winner. He’s not your typical kicker, but was a multi-sport high school athlete who uses angles, leverage, and good athleticism to be an asset on kick coverage.

Important Notes:

  • Four year starter for the Miami Hurricanes
  • First team All-ACC selection in 2017
  • Played football, lacrosse, and hockey in high school

Scouting Report Consensus - What to like:

  • Stellar accuracy in the 40 yard range, making 22 of 25 kicks from 40~49 yards in his career.
  • Good tackler for a kicker
  • Hurricanes recovered two of three onside attempts in his career

Scouting Report Consensus - What to not like:

  • Two blocked kicks in 2016
  • Awful 3 for 11 from 50+ yards in his career
  • Was only 3 for 8 last season from 40+ yards
  • Had his least accurate season last year, making 74% of his kicks (17 for 23)
  • Only 52% of his kickoffs went for touchbacks

Conclusion:

Badgley’s field goal accuracy has dropped over the past three seasons, and has never reached 85% in a single season. He has mediocre kickoffs and is just downright awful from 50+ yards. Has the worst accuracy inside of 40 yards, and from 50+ yards of any of the top kickers in this year’s draft. Ultimately, Badgley is probably good enough to warrant a tryout to be a camp body with some team this preseason, but is unlikely to win a starting job. If the Bengals are content with keeping a nominal veteran like Bullock, somebody like Badgley could be brought in as a free agent in a “competition”. But if the Bengals are looking to upgrade the position, Badgely likely isn’t the answer.
