Sunday started off on a weird note after veteran safety George Iloka was released by the Bengals out of the blue.

Despite the Bengals looking for safety help during the offseason, Iloka’s departure was a move very few saw coming.

As a long-time starter and mainstay of the defense, Iloka was one of the more experienced players in the defensive backfield for the Bengals.

For whatever reason, be it financial, scheme, or depreciating skill set, Iloka’s release is perplexing. His spot seemed safe, even though the Bengals drafted a safety in the second round of this year’s . draft.

George Iloka himself took to Twitter shortly after the fact.

Then Joe Mixon tweeted what everyone was thinking.

Jessie Bates, who will now play in Iloka’s place, and backup safety Clayton Fejedelem also took to Twitter on Sunday to thank Iloka and acknowledge his leadership.

Fellow safety Clayton Fejedelem did the same.

Some of the veterans on the defense also expressed themselves on social media.

Dre Kirkpatrick elaborated on his Tweet this morning at Paul Brown Stadium.

And Carlos Dunlap had something to say, too.

And there’s this...

It’s safe to say Iloka’s release was a surprise not only to fans, but to his former teammates, too.
