The Bengals have lost another offensive lineman to injury against the Bills.

After losing Cordy Glenn earlier in the game to a shoulder injury, guard Christian Westerman was forced from the game in the third quarter. After taking a knee following a player, he went to the sideline and was later seen heading to the locker room to be examined by trainers for what was announced as a back injury, as the team also ruled him out.

The injury actually forced starter Clint Boling to re-enter the game late in the third quarter after it appeared his day was done.

Not long after Westerman’s injury, the team announced backup running back Jarveon Williams was out with a knee injury. He was competing for a spot on the practice squad with the backfield already being too crowded for him to make the 53-man roster. He made the practice squad last season.

As for Westerman, he was hoping to earn more playing time along the Bengals’ revamped offensive line in 2018. As a rookie fifth-round pick in 2016, Westerman was buried behind starters Clint Boling and Kevin Zeitler and was inactive for the entire season.

2017 was more of the same throughout the first 34 of the season. Zeitler left a vacancy at right guard, but Westerman was still on the outside looking in. Trey Hopkins eventually seized the spot and Westerman was left to warm the bench for the year once again, but his patience finally paid off before season’s end once Boling moved to right tackle.

This year, Westerman has been working exclusively at left guard, even though right guard is a big weakness right now. It’s unclear why the Bengals haven’t given him a chance on the right side, where Hopkins and Alex Redmond have left a lot to be desired.

We will have more on this story shortly as more details come out.
