It’s been quite the week for Bengals safety Shawn Williams. Last night, he forced two turnovers in the Bengals win over the Ravens, and on Sunday, he was ejected in the first quarter of the season opener against the Colts for a late hit on quarterback Andrew Luck.
Now, the hit will also cost Williams financially.
The NFL has fined Williams just over $10,000 for his late hit today.
10 thousand dollars for Williams isn’t quite nothing, and a comparable fine was given out to Los Angeles Rams cornerback Marcus Peters recently for his touchdown celebration on Monday Night Football against the Oakland Raiders. Peters was fined $13,000 earlier today for his celebratory gesture, which put a slightly bigger dent in his wallet compared to Williams.
Peters isn’t a first-time offender when it comes to unsportsmanlike conduct, so his fine was probably weighted when accounting for his history. But still, it’s strange to see a violent and unnecessary hit to an opposing player’s helmet cost less than a touchdown celebration.
Nevertheless, Williams served his ejection and now has paid the price for it.
