The Bengals and Jets were once neck and neck in the tank race for the first overall pick. Now, New York finds itself in no mans land as they are just merely playing for an outside shot at the playoffs.

The Jets are getting a chance to see what Sam Darnold can do in this offense. A large part of why their record was so bad for so long was their franchise quarterback being out, but as we saw last week when the Jets demolished the Raiders, they are still capable of being competitive.

The Bengals, meanwhile, are benching their 0-3 rookie quarterback Ryan Finley to go back to their 0-8 veteran quarterback Andy Dalton in the name of trying to win games. The entire blame for Cincinnati’s record doesn’t fall completely on the quarterbacks, but it is clear that this offense hasn’t been able to overcome the absence of A.J. Green all season long. That isn’t an excuse either, because no team should be one injured wide receiver away from being this incompetent on offense.

Dalton could lead this team to one of their best chance of winning a game this season, though. The past two games the Bengals’ defense has been able to keep Cincinnati within striking distance. Dalton is at least more capable of producing in situations where the defense knows that he will have to throw the ball. Finley looked like he could do nothing in those situations in his three games.
