As expected, the Cincinnati Bengals are placing A.J. Green on injured reserve this week. Head coach Zac Taylor made the announcement at his Monday press conference.
This comes as no surprise after it was revealed last week that Green was likely going on IR in Week 17. Green and the team had been holding out hope he could make a late-season return. However, just couldn’t make enough progress in his recovery to warrant playing him in meaningless late-season games.
Green recently revealed that he’s still working to get back his range of motion in the ankle he injured in training camp, which led to surgery. He was set to return following the team’s mid-season bye week, but he suffered a setback in practice that has kept him from practicing ever since.
Now, the Bengals will likely place the franchise tag on Green this offseason if the two sides can’t agree to a new contract before he becomes a free agent. But that also means Green will skip OTAs next offseason, and he’s no lock for training camp either.
