Preston Brown signed a three-year deal worth up to $21 million to stay with the Bengals. The exact details of the contract haven’t been released yet, but it shows a clear commitment to a player they gave a one-year contract to last season.
Brown was brought in to play middle linebacker last season for Cincinnati, but unfortunately, he got hurt Week 1. This led to him playing hurt until the team put him on injured reserve after he played seven games. This was new for Brown who hadn’t missed a game his four seasons in Buffalo.
He was third on the team with two interceptions, which probably says more about the rest of the defense than himself. Still, he doesn’t really represent that upgrade in the speed department that the Bengals need at the linebacker position.
What Brown does provide is a great locker-room presence. He actually grew up as a Bengals fan, and you can never have too many guys who actually want to be on a team that has been bad for three years. He would also provide a nice veteran presence to a room that will likely be filled with young linebackers, and one that could be without Vontaze Burfict if the team opts to part ways with the linebacker this offseason.

I wish they would’ve targeted someone else in free agency

I like it as long as it doesn’t keep them from further addressing the position in free agency and/or the draft
