Darqueze Dennard will be returning to the Bengals next season. The former first-round pick hit free agency, but he ultimately ended back up in Cincinnati.

He will probably step right back into his slot position that he has manned for roughly two seasons now. He will also add some nice depth to the position in case William Jackson or Dre Kirkpatrick have to miss any playing time.

This has to be at least a little bit of a surprise to most people. It appeared the Bengals moved on when they signed B.W. Webb, who successfully played slot corner under the Bengals new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo last season with the Giants. It appeared he was coming in to be Dennard’s replacement, but now he will likely just be a really nice depth piece at corner.

Dennard had visited the Chiefs as well this offseason, and it had also been reported that another team was interested in his services, so it is surprising to see him return to the Bengals.

The details of his contract haven’t been released, but it would be surprising to see him receive a high paying long-term deal considering the Bengals are anticipating Jackson’s contract in the coming seasons, and they already have Kirkpatrick under a very substantial deal as well.

So either the Bengals signed Dennard to a very team-friendly long-term contract, or it is a one-year deal that will allow him to hit free agency again next offseason.

Dennard was the Bengals 2014 first-round selection. He spent most of his early career injured or buried on the depth chart behind players like Adam Jones, Dre Kirkpatrick and Leon Hall. He was Pro Football Focus’ 52nd ranked corner last year, and his best trait by far was his ability to help in the run game. His run-stop grade was sixth among cornerbacks last season.

Dennard will likely hope to show he can improve in coverage this next season in hopes of getting that big payday that every player dreams of.
