Approval Poll: Bengals nab Washington TE Drew Sample

How do you feel about the Bengals selecting a tight end this high?

NFL: Combine Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

The Bengals had a great Thursday night when they added Jonah WIlliams to help a struggling offensive line. They followed that up on Friday night by selecting tight end Drew Sample out of Washington.

Sample is known for his blocking ability. He wasn’t a huge factor in the passing game, but it looks like Cincinnati saw something special in Sample, who only caught 25 passes his senior season.

The second round started with a run on cornerbacks and offensive lineman. We also saw teams far more willing to wheel and deal early on. There were three trades through the first six picks in the second round. Unfortunately, that got rid of many of the players that fans may have been hoping would fall to Cincinnati.

Of course, the Bengals also made a move back to acquire this pick, which originally belonged to the Steelers. Cincinnati allowed the Broncos to move up and take quarterback Drew Lock, and Cincinnati gained an extra fourth round pick (no. 125) and yet another sixth round pick (no. 182).

Sample may not have been the sexiest pick, but the Bengals may see C.J. Uzomah as their future receiving tight end and Tyler Eifert still likely in his last team with the team. The reason for that is if Eifert proves he can stay healthy and has a huge year, he could end up signing a contract that the Bengals won’t be willing to match. Also, if Eifert fails to stay healthy, it is hard to imagine Cincinnati gives him another one-year contract for a third season in a row.

Sample is going to be easily viewed as a reach due to him not being a flashy receiving tight end, but he could be a great fit for Zac Taylor’s offense. He could also really help open up holes for Joe Mixon going forward.
