The Bengals’ first round of cuts have come, and there were no real surprises.
On Friday afternoon, the team announced the following players had been waived:
- LB Curtis Akins
- C Kirk Barron
- S Demetrious Cox
- LS Dan Godsil
- CB Tony Lippett
- DT Dare Odeyingbo
- DT Christian Ringo (injury settlement)
- LB Sterling Sheffield
- DE Immanuel Turner
- K Tristan Vizcaino
- G Christian Westerman
Westerman is the most notable of the group, as the former fifth-round pick out of Arizona State has shown some nice flashes in the brief playing time he’s gotten in the regular season.
However. he struggled to stand out this preseason over guys like Michael Jordan, John Jerry and Trey Hopkins, not to mention he briefly left the team to ponder retirement. While he did eventually return, that likely sealed his fate, and now he’ll look to catch on with another NFL team.
Defensive tackle Christian Ringo had a shot to make the final roster after playing well last season in a limited role, but his injury prevented him from making a real push.
These moves leave the Bengals with 80 players on their active roster, including tight end Moritz Böhringer, an International Player Pathway Program participant who has a roster exemption. NFL teams must make moves to reduce their rosters to 53 players by 4 pm EST on Saturday.
