The Bengals have waived offensive lineman Keaton Sutherland but plan to sign him to the practice squad, per Jay Morrison of The Athletic.

An undrafted free agent signed this offseason, Sutherland played 141 snaps this preseason, primarily at center. At Texas A&M, Sutherland was mainly a guard in offensive line coach Jim Turner’s scheme. Turner was hired by the Bengals this year, so Sutherland joining the Bengals following the NFL Draft was of little surprise.

With John Jerry released today, Sutherland had a slightly better chance of making the final roster, but the team still thinks highly of him if they plan on bringing him back on the practice squad.

If he stays with Cincinnati throughout the year, Sutherland will be an emergency option at all three interior spots and maybe even at tackle. It’ll be interesting to see if any more offensive lineman are kept with Sutherland on the practice squad. Based on how the unit played this preseason, it’s probably best to just stop at Sutherland.
