Approval Poll: Bengals part ways with Jordan Willis to add LaRoy Reynolds

The purge of struggling young Bengals players continues as the team waives Jordan Willis to add LaRoy Reynolds.

This new Bengals coaching staff cut ties with several young players that had struggled to each the field early in their career. They added a new name on Tuesday, defensive end Jordan Willis. They made the cut in order to sign linebacker LaRoy Reynolds.

Willis was a third round pick in 2017, but ironically Cincinnati drafted better pass rushers/defensive ends later in the draft (Carl Lawson) and the following draft (Sam Hubbard). The Bengals also brought in plenty of competition at the position considering the fact they had 11 defensive linemen on their initial 53-man roster.

The team adding a linebacker makes plenty of sense. The team only had four linebackers in Week 1, which may be a little too thin. Reynolds won’t be taking anyone’s starting job. He is a journeyman linebacker who is now landing on his fifth NFL team. This move seems to be more about depth and possibly special teams. It may also be an attempt to land some knowledge on an opponent.

Reynolds has appeared in 84 games, most recently played for the Eagles last regular season. He then landed on the 49ers during training camp, who the Bengals play on Sunday. How much of a help he could be in the information category will remain to be seen.

Willis may be on a short list to be signed by the Bengals, but teams may be tempted to give the third-round pick a second chance on a new team after he had a pretty good preseason.
