2019 was a weird year for the Bengals.
Despite having enough talent to at least have a respectable season, the team found a way to flounder to a 2-14 record and ‘earn’ the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. And it wasn’t like they were getting blown out week to week either. They managed to lose nine contests that one-possession games in the fourth quarter, an unheard of number that made them one of the most competitive ‘worst-record’ NFL teams in recent memory.
Personally, I’m still not sure how a team that had Geno Atkins, Carlos Dunlap, Tyler Boyd, Joe Mixon, Andy Dalton and William Jackson for most of the season managed to win just two games, but somehow, they did it.
Now, the Bengals enter the offseason armed with the kind of assets some teams would kill to have. The most obvious is the No. 1 pick in a draft that has not one of the best franchise quarterback prospects since Andrew Luck, but also a game-changing defensive player like Chase Young.
The Bengals also have a ton of cap space, so if they want to, they can be very active in free agency and get some big upgrades throughout the roster. But if nothing else, they should be able to retain their good free agents to go with what hopes to be a very productive NFL Draft class.
So, knowing all of this, how confident are you in this franchise entering one of its most important offseasons ever?
