The Bengals are set to have another assistant coach defection.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Browns are set to hire Van Pelt to be the team’s next offensive coordinator.

It’s unfortunate for the Bengals to lose yet another assistant after linebackers coach Tem Lukabu and secondary coach Daronte Jones departed, but it’s good to see Van Pelt get a big promotion. He has certainly done some good work with Andy Dalton since joining the Bengals in 2018, and it would have been nice to keep him for he development of whoever Cincinnati’s next quarterback is.

Alas, the Bengals already appear to have his replacement lined up in the form of assistant quarterbacks coach Dan Pitcher, according to Paul Dehner of The Athletic.

Pitcher just finished his fourth season on the Bengals’ coaching staff, and this past season saw him move into the role of assistant quarterbacks coach. He spent 2018 as an offensive assistant with a focus on the quarterbacks, after spending ‘16-17 as an offensive assistant with a focus on the wide receivers.
