Ike Taylor says Jessie Bates is underrated

The former cornerback recognizes Bates’ ability to make plays and says he’ll only get better with more reps.

Jessie Bates has been the second biggest feel-good story of the Bengals’ season after rookie quarterback Joe Burrow, but he hasn’t gotten the sort of attention he deserves. That could change soon.

Former Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor joined our show to preview the Bengals’ Week 10 matchup against Pittsburgh, and one of the topics was Cincinnati’s rising star at free safety.
“Bates so far has been ballin’,” Taylor said. “He’s not an unsung hero, he’s just not talked about as much.”

Taylor then discussed how Bates can get even better. “Reps, reps, reps, game time, game plan, getting burnt a few times will really put things in perspective,” said Taylor, who now co-hosts the Bleav in Steelers podcast.

Taylor reflected on the risk-reward mentality of playing in the secondary in general, offering the following sage advice to the Bengals’ 23-year-old rising star:
“You gotta have a short memory. A damn-near ‘I don’t care what happens’ memory... You gotta understand, when you shoot, someone’s going to shoot back at you... Sometimes you’re going to make your plays, sometimes the receivers are going to make their plays depending on how good the quarterback is on placing that ball. You gotta understand what comes with the territory, and it’s big plays.”
