NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers at Cincinnati Bengals Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

The Bengals get a chance to show how far they’ve come in the Zac Taylor era as they head into Pittsburgh to take on the undefeated Steelers. This will be the first of their two matchups this season after Cincinnati failed to pull off a win against Pittsburgh last season.

This year is obviously different for many different reasons though. The biggest is the arrival of rookie quarterback Joe Burrow. When he was drafted first overall, it was in part because of his ability to perform in games like he will see on Sunday. Big games in the spotlight where he will be relied on to perform at his best. Cincinnati has lost the previous nine matchups with Pittsburgh.

Meanwhile, the Steelers have been red hot with the return of Ben Roethlisberger. His status to play Sunday is far from certain after suffering two knee injuries this past week and also being placed on the COVID-19 list after having close contact with Vance McDonald who tested positive for the virus. There is still a chance that he will test negative and be able to return Saturday, but right now that is a big if. Without Roethlisberger, the entire landscape of the game would change as he has been enjoying a very good season so far.

The real issue facing the Bengals isn’t Roethlisberger, though. It is how well the offensive line will be able to protect Burrow from T.J. Watt and the other talented pass rushers that will be lining up opposite of him. Cincinnati has enjoyed a couple weeks where they have really done a terrific job of protecting the franchise quarterback, but they haven’t faced quite the level of pass rush they will see on Sunday. How well the protection holds up could very well be the key to an upset for the Bengals.

How will these young Bengals fair against the established Steelers?
