The Cincinnati Bengals didn’t give up much when they acquired left tackle Cordy Glenn from the Buffalo Bills heading into the 2018 season. They moved back in the first round as well as swapping some late-round picks. This move didn’t end up fixing the offensive line like the front office would’ve hoped, but this exit plan always existed.
The Bengals have now released Glenn while saving $9.5 million in cap space with no dead money.
The Bengals reached this move after trying to trade the unhappy offensive lineman, but obviously NFL teams knew the situation wasn’t in Cincinnati’s favor. They had a player they needed to cut before the new league year to create cap space, and Glenn wasn’t a great example of consistency during the 2019 season where he missed a large amount of time due to a concussion as well as being held out by the team for his behavior towards the coaches while he was out.
In Glenn’s defense, he allegedly wasn’t happy with being pressured by a coach to come back from his concussion. That obviously isn’t a good look for the coaching staff, and it was hard to imagine when that news came out that Glenn would be back with the Bengals in 2020.
Cincinnati won’t have to worry about filling Glenn’s spot as they drafted Jonah Williams last season in the first round. The Bengals also allegedly plan on being more active in free agency than normal, which means that $9.5 million in cap space could theoretically be put to good use, but that remains to be seen.
