The Bengals have now officially added to each level of their defense this offseason by signing former-Raven linebacker Josh Bynes.
Bynes has been around the NFL. He was originally an undrafted free agent with the Ravens back in 2011, but he has had stints with the Lions and Cardinals in between his time in Baltimore.
He has been a solid, reliable linebacker no matter where he has gone, and he comes in as a pretty big improvement over what Cincinnati has had at the position the past few seasons. That says more about what the Bengals have been working with at linebacker, though.
This move adds Bynes into a group with second-year linebacker Germaine Pratt and Jordan Evans. The Bengals will likely still be heavily looking into linebackers in the draft, but this move doesn’t need them feeling desperate over the position.
The timing was very curious as former-Bengal linebacker Nick Vigil was reportedly heading to the Chargers maybe an hour or so before hand. It is possible that Vigil and the Bengals were trying to work out a deal, but it failed. Or it is possible it was all just a coincidence. Losing Vigil was a panic moment as he was viewed as a fallback by many fans and writers after the initial wave of free agency. He also played much better the second half of 2019.
It is good to have some new faces to look forward to next season, though. It is also great that Cincinnati isn’t leaving their roster with holes left unfilled heading into the draft.
