The Bengals selected Akeem Davis-Gaither with the opening pick of the fourth round.

After the Bengals linebacker room was a disaster in 2019, the 2020 room have been completely overhauled. The Bengals picked up Josh Bynes in free agency, and drafted his heir apparent in the third round in Logan Wilson. The Bengals drafted linebacker in back-to-back rounds, taking Davis-Gaither out of Appalachian State.

Davis-Gaither was the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year last year in one of the best seasons in school history. But some injury concern dropped his draft stock, leaving him at 107 for the Bengals.

The Bengals coached Davis-Gaither at the Senior Bowl, and he was actually a team captain at the event. That kind of strong leadership made him even more attractive to a Bengals team that’s desperately needed a leader for the linebackers, both with his on-field play and locker-room influence.

Davis-Gaither won’t start right away, but should make an interesting special teams player and backup. If he stays healthy, he could prove to be a steal.
