Similarities are everywhere when you compare the histories of the Cincinnati Bengals and Detroit Lions, but they are not equals this week.
In regards to this season, the only thing they have in common is a loss to the Green Bay Packers. The Bengals just got over that earlier this week, and they’re not looking to drop two games in a row for the first time all year.
Standing in their way are the Lions, who have fought valiantly for five weeks but have no wins to show for it. They came as close as they’ve been this season last week against the Minnesota Vikings, but a game-winning kick brought head coach Dan Campbell to tears in his post-game press conference.
Penei Sewell, Campbell’s first draft pick with the Lions, finds himself on the opposite sideline of Ja’Marr Chase for the first time. Both players were pinned against each-other for weeks leading up to the 2021 NFL Draft. Chase has been racking up Rookie of the Week honors while Sewell is just trying to find his place on Detroit’s offensive line. The Lions can only hope to contain Chase this week, but the Bengals should look to attack Sewell.
Still hovering over .500 in mid-October, the Bengals have a reputation to uphold this weekend. They’ve won their last six games against the Lions. That streak goes all the way back to 1998 since they only play each other every few years. The last time the Lions took down the Bengals, it had only been less than two years since the Bengals’ last playoff win. That should put things into perspective.
