Bengals previous 3-1 starts (or better)

The Bengals began the 1990 season with a 3-1 record.

That season was also the last time the Bengals won a playoff game.

.

Since the 1990 season (30 years ago) the Bengals have started 3-1 (or 4-0) a total of 8 times, including the 2021 season. How have the Bengals done in those previous seven seasons?

.

2005

After a 15-year absence, the Bengals again started a season at 3-1. They actually started 4-0, and then reached an 11-3 record. They lost their final 2 games, missing out on a 1st round bye, but they did reach the playoffs.

(11-5, wildcard game in playoffs)

.

2006

In 2006 the Bengals made it back-to-back 3-1 starts. The Bengals were 3-0 before a 1-5 stretch dropped them to 4-5. The rebounded with 4 straight wins, to reach 8-5, placing them in the playoff hunt. But they ended the year with 3 losses to miss the playoffs.

(8-8)

.

2009

The Bengals made a fast start in 2009, beginning the season 4-1, and then reaching 9-3. But as in 2006, they struggled down the stretch. They finished the year with a 1-3 record over the last 4 games, stumbling into the playoffs.

(10-6, wildcard game in playoffs)

.

2012

After a 3-1 start, the Bengals lost 4 straight games. Sitting at 3-5, they rebounded with a 7-1 in the second half of the season, and made the playoffs.

(10-6, wildcard game in playoffs)

.

2014

The Bengals began 2014 with a fifth 3-1 start over their past 10 seasons. They jumped to 8-3-1, before finishing out 2-2, making the playoffs.

(10-5-1, wildcard game in playoffs)

.

2015

In 2015 the Bengals did better than 3-1, by starting 4-0. Actually, they started 8-0. But like most seasons under Marvin Lewis, they did not play as well, later in the season, finishing out 4-4, but made the playoffs with that fantastic 8-0 start.

(12-4, wildcard game in playoffs)

.

2018

In the last season of Marvin Lewis’ extremely long tenure with the Bengals, they began 3-1, and entered the bye week at 5-3. But they had yet another subpar second half, finishing 1-7, missing the playoffs.

(6-10)

.

Summing that all up, the Bengals have 7 times begun the season at 3-1 (or 4-0). They reached the playoffs in 5 of those 7 seasons (although always in the wild card game, and never with a bye).

.

Outside of the 2012 season, the Bengals were not able to match their early season success with victories later in the year, and they failed to notch a playoff victory in any of those seasons beginning 3-1 – at least not since 1990.

.

So what does that mean for 2021? Well, past results don't drive future performance, but they do show that the Bengals are generally able to reach at least a wild card spot when starting 3-1, as the 3-1 start has usually been a good indicator of a good season for them.
