As we get closer to the 2021 NFL Draft, Cincinnati Bengals fans are curious who the team will take with the 5th-overall pick.
The general belief is that they will end up with one of Oregon Ducks tackle Penei Sewell or LSU Tigers receiver Ja’Marr Chase. There’s been some buzz for Florida Gators tight end Kyle Pitts, but indications are that he’s not in play for the 5th pick.
In Pro Football Network’s latest 4-round mock draft they have the Bengals getting both Sewell and an LSU wide receiver in the draft.
“Sewell is athletic, strong, and dominant. He’s demonstrated that he is equally adept in pass protection or run blocking. Plug him in at left tackle, switch Jonah Williams to right tackle, and you’ve potentially got the bookends of a ten-year offensive line. Moreover, they need to make additions to the interior of the offensive line too. Therefore, they use their fourth-round pick in this 2021 NFL Mock Draft on Ole Miss offensive guard Royce Newman.”
In this mock draft, Chase ends up going 7th overall to the Detroit Lions, but the Bengals still land an LSU wide receiver in the 2nd round as they pick Terrace Marshall Jr.
During the 2020 season, Marshall hauled in 48 receptions for 731 yards and 10 TDs. In 2019 with Joe Burrow at QB, Marshall had 46 receptions for 671 yards and 13 TDs.
Often noted is the connection between Burrow and Chase, so taking Marshall would still check that box.
Obviously, Marshall is not the prospect that Chase is, but he would still be a nice addition after a massive offensive line pickup by taking Sewell.
This is just one of the many routes the Bengals can go in the upcoming draft, but this one makes a lot of sense if they are set on getting Sewell with the 5th pick.
As for the remaining picks, the Bengals land USC Trojans defensive tackle Jay Tufele in Round 3, followed by Ole Miss Rebels guard Royce Newman in Round 4. Getting these four players would address arguably the Bengals’ four biggest needs heading into the draft.
