Cameron Sample draws comparisons to Carl Lawson

The Cincinnati Bengals opened the fourth round by taking Cameron Sample, a defensive end from Tulane.

Joseph Ossai fell to the Bengals in round three, and will provide some much needed depth on the edge. The Bengals doubled up on the edge with Sample, who they selected with the 111th pick of the draft.

Sample is already drawing comparisons to another defensive end the Bengals took in the fourth round of the draft. According to John Ledyard, sample could be the next Carl Lawson.

The first thing that makes him a good fit for the Bengals is that he is scheme-versatile. That’s something that Zac Taylor likes, and something that Sam Hubbard and Ossai can both offer.

Sample has long arms and big hands, which help him breaking up passes, and help him win with physicality.

One thing that really helped his draft stock was his Senior Bowl performance, in which he was one of the biggest standouts.

However, he doesn’t have the high motor that makes Sample so appealing. He has a good initial burst, but tends to fade out the longer the play goes.

He will probably not be a starter for at least a few years, and will compete with Khalid Kareem for that fourth defensive end spot.

But Lawson played so well that the Jets just signed him to a $45 million deal. If Sample ever gets that kind of deal, whether with the Bengals or with someone else, then it shows how impactful he ended up becoming.
