It’s been nearly two full years since Jordan Matthews caught an NFL pass.
The former second-round pick out of Vanderbilt began his professional career as a wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles back in 2014. Seven years later, Matthews is attempting a comeback into the game as a tight end.
Now at the age of 29 and the weight of 235 pounds, Matthews has redone his physique with the hopes of earning another NFL contract. On Sunday, Matthews was one of five tight ends to participate in The CAMP, a football camp ran by HUB Football in San Diego.
Per James Rapien of AllBengals.com, the Cincinnati Bengals were present at Matthews’ workout and spoke with him afterwards.
The Bengals have seven tight ends on their 85-man roster heading into training camp. Outside of C.J. Uzomah and Drew Sample, they don’t have a ton of NFL experience or production at the position.
While Matthews is a converted tight end, he does have receiving ability that not many tight ends fighting for roster spots have.
Matthews has recorded 275 receptions, 3,288 yards, and 22 touchdowns in 75 games in his six-year career thus far. He only played in five games from 2019-20 and registered just four receptions for 33 yards during those seasons.
It would be an uphill battle for Matthews to make the Bengals’ Week 1 roster, but that’s going to be the case regardless of where he might end up.
