With the third and final week of the preseason on deck, the Cincinnati Bengals continue to inch closer to their 53-man roster for Week 1.

On Sunday, following news that rookie defensive end Joseph Ossai will likely miss the 2021 season with a knee injury, the Bengals announced the following roster moves:

  • Waived defensive tackle Freedom Akinmoladun, QB Eric Dungey, center Lamont Gaillard and tight end Cheyenne O’Grady, and terminated the contract of veteran safety Kavon Frazier.
  • Signed free agent defensive end Noah Spence.
  • Cleared punter Drue Chrisman to return to practice.

A fifth-year player out of Eastern Kentucky University, Spence (6-2 and 251 pounds) was originally a second-round pick of Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2016. He spent 2016-18 with Tampa Bay, before later joining Washington (2019) and New Orleans (2019-20). He was released by the Saints on Aug. 16th. Spence has played in 41 career games and has 7.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and a pass deflection.

Chrisman, who passed a physical today, had been on the Active/Non-Football Injury list since July 25. Barring an injury to the incumbent Kevin Huber, Chrisman isn’t going to make the final roster, but he could possibly make the practice squad if the Bengals think he has a future in this league and want to have a backup punter close by.
