Smash Mouth Rating Depicts Weak Bengal Offensive Line

Bengals' offensive line higher than expected in updated rankings - Cincy Jungle

If it all starts up front, is there a way we can measure the collective strength of a teams offense and defensive line? Many years ago I was trying to come up with a way to statistically measure a teams collective strength at the line of scrimmage and so was born the smash mouth rating. I developed this rating by simply taking a teams total rushing yards divided by the number of games. Then I take the total number of rushing yards allowed and divide by the number of games and subtract the rushing yards per game allowed from the rushing yards gained per game. The difference is the numerical smash mouth rating. Since you want to gain more yards rushing than you allow you want to have a positive smash mouth rating but as we'll see that's not always the case.

Like any statistic it has limitations. It was much more accurate 30 years ago when I put pen to paper. This can be explained by the simple fact that the game has changed. Spread formations and a expanded reliance on passing has change the accuracy of the smash mouth rating but it still has some utility and the aberrations have explanations

. You'll notice one common theme amongst teams who's rating is only slightly positive or negative, they've have good performance from their QB's as we've witness here with the Bengals. You'll notice that the Eagles surprisingly have the best rating, this can be explained by less then stellar play from Hurts in the passing game but his ability to run. The Cardinals plus rating may not be fully attributable to the play of their line, It may be due to Murray's ability to run from the pocket. You'll also note some accuracy, the Steelers have the worst rating by far and we can directly attribute its cause is the weakness of their respective lines. The Titians are simply a smash mouth team and the rating shows that but they're in trouble if they have to play from behind.

Here are the smash mouth ratings for this years playoff teams.
