After watching Bengals-chiefs game yesterday, I feel primary reason is poor PLAY CALLING. Before I illustrate my point, few random observations from the game.
1. Bengals were lucky that Chase was able to haul that jump ball on 4th drown in the 4th quarter. It was a very risky call and 50% of the time, it would not have worked.
2. Bengals would not have kept the game so close had Malhomes not lose the grip of the ball during the drive in the 4th quarter, they would have been up by 2 scores if not at least 10 points. Their offense was looking in good rhythm just before the ball slipped out of his hands.
3. Malhomes was dumping the ball over Hendrickson every time he would try to pressure right side, reducing his effectiveness immediately and gaining 4-6 yards. Bengals never saw that I guess...
4. Our right tackly Adenji reminded me of Bobby Hart yesterday, he had no clue how to block the DE. I would think even a turnstile would do a better job than what he did yesterday in pass protection.
Now, why poor play calling?
1. In 4th quarter, with 9 minutes remaining we get the ball back. On the first down, Mixon rushed for 7 yards, so I thought Bengals would try to move the chain and kill the clock as much as possible before giving the ball back. Instead, what did they do? 2nd down, deep throw to Higgins who was double covered, resulting in incomplete pass...3rd down same shit, deep throw towards Chase who was double covered. They give the ball back.....Absolutely no attempt to pound the ball in 4th quarter and wear down that defense....Adenji could have been better in the run game in my opinion...This play calling was ridiculous to say the least...
2. With 2 minutes remaining, they get the ball back...With Malhomes you know the drill, right? Do not give the ball back even with 15 seconds to him. You know what he did to Buffalo last year? Bengals move the chain thanks to big play on 3rd down by Hurst...You would think they either kill the clock or move the ball just enough to get in the field goal range. Priority should have been to kill the clock. Instead, they try to throw on 2nd and 3rd downs. Incomplete passes....
3. Why not give max protection to Burrow in final 2 minutes?
Long story short: Bengals OC idea is to throw the ball in the vicinity of Chase and hope for magic to happen. It happened last year but you cannot keep on repeating that stuff over and over again. It is time to bring in new offensive coordinator, I am not sure if Brian Callahan is to blame here because I do not know who is calling those plays....
