Bengals at Chiefs odds, expert predictions, and staff picks for Week 17

The Bengals are heavy underdogs against the Chiefs Sunday.

NFL: Cincinnati Bengals at Pittsburgh Steelers Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs will meet Sunday for a very important game for the Bengals’ playoff hopes. Who better to be the opponent for Cincinnati than Kansas City?

These two teams have developed a little bit of a rivalry over the past two seasons, as the Bengals’ rise as a competitor has had these teams meet the past two AFC Championship games.

Now, with a game that could keep Cincinnati’s playoff hopes realistic, Kansas City remains the team in the way.

Odds

The Bengals are currently 6.5-point underdogs on the road against the Chiefs, according to DraftKings Sportsbook. The point total is set at 44 this week.

The Chiefs are backing into this one as well off a loss to the Oakland Raiders, but they still obviously have Patrick Mahomes at quarterback and are at home, so it isn’t surprising to see the spread so far in Kansas City’s favor. It could shrink or grow a bit as Ja’Marr Chase’s availability this week as well.

Betting Trends

Bengals

  • 3-4 on the road
  • 6-7-2 against the spread
  • Hit the over in nine out of 15 games
  • Average total points for games involving the Bengals 44.2

Chiefs

  • 4-4 at home
  • 7-8 against the spread
  • Hit the over five out of 15 games
  • Average total points for games involving the Chiefs is 39.9

Expert selections

  • CBS Sports only has one expert taking the upset
  • Only one of ESPN’s experts believes in Cincinnati
  • NFL Pick Watch, which takes into account picks from across the web, only has the Bengals receiving 4% of the picks.

It isn’t surprising to see this many experts taking the Chiefs with the state of these two teams. On paper, it is really hard to pick the Bengals upsetting the Chiefs without Joe Burrow at the helm and Jake Browning coming off his worst start since taking over.

One of the key things that could help Browning out is if Chase is able to return. He originally struggled when Tee Higgins was out in his first start, but the team won three straight when both Higgins and Chase were able to suit up.

It certainly does make the offense with Browning more potent when the defense isn’t able to take away either of those guys and force Browning to win by using the rest of the supporting cast.

We will have to see if the Bengals can shock the world on Sunday and hand the Chiefs another loss.
