Bengals sign linebacker J.K. Schaffer to the 53-man roster

With Jeromy Miles not expected to play Monday night against the Steelers, the team decided to promote linebacker J.K. Schaffer to the 53-man roster.

It appears that the inevitable has finally happened.

At least for today.

The Cincinnati Bengals announced on Monday that they've promoted linebacker J.K. Schaffer to the team's 53-man roster while waiving safety Jeromy Miles. Miles was doubtful for the team's Monday Night game against the Pittsburgh Steelers with a hamstring. Schaffer led the team with 20 tackles during the preseason and added a quarterback sack and interception.

Don't call it a permanent move.

Miles, who posted a special teams tackle last week against the Chicago Bears, wasn't expected to play Monday Night and Schaffer presents an option on defense and special teams. It's entirely possible that Taylor Mays, who worked at a position normally reserved for linebackers, will have a higher workload on special teams and in the secondary opening the road for Schaffer.

Either way, there could be a similar move made later that would bring Miles back once he's healthy.
