Chalk Talk: Big plays costing the Bengals defense

Examining the big plays that have hurt the Bengals this season and how to fix them.

The Bengals had a chance at getting their first win of the season this weekend, but once again came up short. The Steelers struggled to generate any offense, but a 79-yard touchdown pass from Devlin Hodges to James Washington was all they ended up needing to grab yet another win against their division rival.

This reminded me of a big play that the Bengals gave up to the Steelers early this year, but it is even more similar to a play they gave up to the Steelers in Week 1. In the film room session this week, I examine all of the touchdowns of over 25 yards that the Bengals have given up this season.

It started in Week 1 versus the Seahawks and continued to draw national attention with Lamar Jackson’s ridiculous run in Week 10. We look at the tape and attempt to answer these questions:

  • What caused these defensive breakdowns?
  • Could they have been avoided?
  • Who are the biggest culprits?
  • With the points being limited the past couple of games, is the defense turning a corner?

These Chalk Talk episodes will be available throughout the season and into the offseason. Be sure to tune in, as we continue to break down the X’s and O’s.

All of the film review content will be on SB Nation’s Cincy Jungle podcast channel, along with the other episodes of The Orange and Black Insider. New shows like the “Orange is the New Black” podcast from Ace Boogie and Zim WhoDey and “Sorry If I Spit When I Speak” from Dadio Makdook and Dr. Hodgie Smodgie have also been added to the channel’s audio slate.

The video of my film reviews can be found on the OBI YouTube page and/or Cincy Jungle’s Facebook page. Thanks for watching!
