With over four minutes remaining in the second quarter, Pro Bowl defensive tackle Geno Atkins laid crippled on the turf for several minutes. After the team's medical staff examined him for several minutes, Atkins was helped off the field by teammates where he was later carted back to the locker room. After half time, NFL Network sidelines reporter Alex Flanagan reported that Atkins was sporting crutches with a significant ice pack.
After the game, Mike Silver with the NFL Network reported that Atkins tore his ACL. Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis confirmed the ACL injury, but added that he'll be reevaluated when the team returns to Cincinnati.
Once examinations confirm the injury, Atkins will become the eighth player to be placed on season-ending Injured Reserve (all of them on defense), joining Taylor Mays and Leon Hall, both of whom were placed on IR earlier this week.
Atkins' season (most likely) ends while leading the team with six quarterback sacks, one recorded against the Miami Dolphins on Thursday.
