Shane Ray can likely kiss his chances of being drafted in the first round goodbye.
According to Missouri sports talk radio host Brandon Kiley, Ray was cited for marijuana possession Monday morning in Cooper County. He was later released, but this still could not come at a worst time with the 2015 NFL Draft just days away and Ray already seeing his stock plummet with a report that he may need surgery, which he has denied.
NFL.com draft analyst Lance Zierlein reported last week that Ray suffered a foot injury that could put him out for five months if he has surgery. Zierlein also said the injury could drop Ray out of the first round, but Ray has done himself the disservice to ensure that will happen with this marijuana citation.
No NFL team is going to want to spend a first, or likely even a second-round pick on a player who would make such a dumb decision on the heels of joining a professional organization in the NFL.
This past season at Missouri, Ray registered a school-record 14 sacks at defensive end, becoming the SEC defensive player of the year and a consensus first-team All-American. The 6-foot-3, 245-pounder was at one point a likely top-10 pick, but the foot injury and marijuana citation could knock him all the way to Day 3 of the draft.
