Massachusetts quarterback Blake Frohnapfel invited to Bengals minicamp

University of Massachusetts quarterback Blake Frohnapfel has been invited by the Bengals for a tryout, according to NFL.com.

Frohnapfel, pronounced, FROH nap-ul, was a two year backup at Marshall University where he earned his undergraduate degree before transferring to Umass for his remaining two years of eligibility. As a first year graduate student at UMass in 2014, he was awarded as a Distinguished MAC Scholar-Athlete, MAC All-Academic Team and was an All-MAC First Team Quarterback. That season, he played 10 games, had a pass efficiency of 132.24 and was part of an offense that averaged 326.1 yards per game.

In 2015, he played 12 games, had a passing efficiency of 113.98 and led an offense averaging 247.7 yards per game. In more games than not, Frohnapfel had negative rushing yards and he had 16 touchdowns to 13 interceptions. His numbers were actually better in 2014, when he had 23 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Here's an excerpt from his NFL.com Draft profile:

Frohnapfel might have NFL size, but he doesn't have enough arm to overcome the turnovers that could plague him thanks to his slow release and penchant for looking down targets. Maybe his size will get him into a camp, but unless he has a banner postseason, it’s hard to see his game tape getting teams excited.

The Bengals have also invited Utah quarterback Travis Wilson to Cincinnati for a minicamp tryout. And, signed Bowling Green quarterback Matt Johnson. Rookie mini camp is scheduled for Friday, May 6.

Fun fact: Frohnapfel means "happy apple" in German.
