With the suspension of Vontaze Burfict being upheld by the NFL, the Bengals have much bigger problems than just losing their top linebacker. Burfict provided leadership and emotion to a defense that has trouble finding success without him.

Once again, the Bengals will be starting the season without one of their best defensive players in Vontaze Burfict.

Burfict lost his appeal for his PED suspension and as a result will miss the first four games of the season. Head coach Marvin Lewis has stated that the team would be fine without Burfict.

Others outside of the team wonder if second-year player Jordan Evans is ready to step up or if the team should seek another linebacker through free agency or a trade. While the Bengals’ depth at linebacker was a concern even before the Burfict suspension, the problem goes much deeper than just having enough talent to put on the field.

For better or worse, Burfict is one of the leaders on Cincinnati’s defense. He plays with passion. Passion is something that can sometimes get him into trouble, but it also plays a key role in the success of defenses in the NFL.

When Burfict is not there, this defense lacks that passion and plays poorly. The only other player on Cincinnati’s defense in 2017 who came anywhere close to matching this was Adam Jones.

Both were missing from the 2017 season opener and the defensive unit seemed to have no heart. Not having either to start the 2018 season, could spell trouble for the Bengals.

When Burfict is on the field, he elevates the game of everyone around him. Geno Atkins and Carlos Dunlap are veteran all-pros, but they do not inspire those around them to play with a heightened level of intensity.

William Jackson III is on the brink of becoming a star in the NFL, but does he have what it takes to place the needed demands on the defensive unit?

What the Bengals need is a voice that demands attention. They need someone who is not afraid to get in the face of every other man on the field and call him out when he is not performing at the top of his game.

Two notable additions have been made to the Bengals’ defense this off-season who could fill this void. The person who inspires intense play out of a defense does not have to be on the field.

New defensive coordinator Teryl Austin’s defenses always came to play in Detroit. The responsibility for getting the Bengals’ defense to play fast and physical lies squarely on his shoulders. Whether the catalyst is the coach or a player, Austin must makes sure it happens.

The other candidate is Preston Brown. During the course of his NFL career, the Bengals’ new middle linebacker has not been known for his leadership ability. In fact, at one point the Bills stopped using him as their defensive signal caller because he wasn’t a strong enough voice on the field.

The Bengals defense is lackluster without Burfict and Jones and it is not solely because of their talent. As intense and talented players who were vocal and respected by their teammates, the pair was able to push those around them to a higher level.

The Bengals need to find a new voice to inspire the defensive unit to get back to its previous form as one of the best units in the NFL.

The Bengals could be on the verge of adding one of the top defensive backs to hit free agency this offseason.

The Cincinnati Bengals are still interested in bolstering the safety position.

That became evident this offseason when the team offered a contract to free agent Kurt Coleman, who wound up signing with the New Orleans Saints. The Bengals never reportedly showed interest in any other safeties, but now, they may have someone in mind.

According to NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport, the Bengals are hosting Eric Reid for a free agent visit. Rapoport also adds there’s a real chance Reid signs during his visit.

#49ers FA S Eric Reid, whose #Bengals visit has been a long-time coming, has been methodical about his plans. Have to think there is a real chance he signs with this visit. Would allow Cincy to play more three-safety looks, which is their goal.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) April 9, 2018

In 2017, Reid racked up 67 tackles, four pass deflections and two interceptions in 13 games (12 starts). He recorded 62 tackles, one interception and five pass deflections in 10 games in 2016.

Reid finished this past season ranked 30th among Pro Football Focus’ top 86 safeties. He would quickly become one of Cincinnati’s top defensive backs if he signs here.

While safety doesn’t appear to be a need, it wouldn’t be hard for the Bengals to find an upgrade over Shawn Williams, who has been above average in his first two years as a full-time safety in Cincinnati’s defense.

George Iloka didn’t exactly light the world on fire last year either, but he’s done well enough throughout his career to think his spot is very safe.

I doubt this means Iloka or Williams would get released if Reid signs, but it would definitely put both safeties on notice.

More importantly, this would give the Bengals a much-needed boost in the secondary, not to mention a potential upgrade at one of the two safety spots.

But as Rapoport writes, the Bengals want to use more three-safety looks in their defense, and Reid would be a heck of a third safety to have.

Tough decisions may be coming as the Bengals manage the team’s 2018 cap space.

The Bengals have made a number of key signings and acquisitions since the end of the 2017 NFL season.

The Cordy Glenn trade brings on a $11,250,000 cap hit for the Bengals this year. Tyler Eifert has a $4,125,000 cap hit on his $5.5 million deal. Even Kevin Huber’s new $2.3 million cap hit this season added a considerable ding to the Bengals’ cap space for 2018.

After all the signings the Bengals have made this offseason, the team has $17,420,171 in cap room remaining, according to the NFLPA’s public salary cap report. (See below for the full report.)

Let’s take a look at last year’s Bengals draft class, which had the same number of draft picks as the Bengals currently possess in 2018, 11.

Cap hits 2017 draft class:

John Ross: $3,084,444

Joe Mixon: $990,940

Jordan Willis: $691,100

Carl Lawson: $628,153

Josh Malone: $614,810

Ryan Glasgow: $569,912

Jordan Evans: $504,126

Jake Elliott:$288,348*

J.J. Dielman: $288,348*

Brandon Wilson: $218,823

Mason Schreck: $364,071

TOTAL: $8,243,075

*Contracts terminated and cap hits no longer available. Money noted is what they earned with Bengals.

Additionally, Spotrac has projected how much the Bengals’ 2018 rookie class will cost and the projection says the cap hit will be $8,433,155. So, let’s use that number for now, though it won’t be 100 percent accurate and will change if the Bengals make any draft weekend trades.

As of today the Bengals have $17,420,171 in cap space. If you take out Spotrac’s draft projection total, that’s $8,987,016 remaining. The Bengals will likely still sign a few more low-key free agents between now and the start of the season. They will also sign some undrafted free agents on low-cost deals.

Maybe more importantly, both Geno Atkins and Carlos Dunlap are set to become free agents in 2019 and the Bengals want to work on long-term extensions with both players this offseason. That will eat into the $8,987,016 number. It’s possible the team even looks to extend Darqueze Dennard or Tyler Kroft, too. Extensions will likely raise the 2018 cap hit of those players, other than Dennard who is set to play on an expensive fifth year option to his rookie contract. If he were to receive an extension, his 2018 cap hit could be lowered.

The Bengals rarely make cuts for cap purposes, but the team may need to do that in the coming weeks/months to ensure there’s enough space to extend the players they want to extend, especially the defensive leaders. The Bengals also typically leave some padding for emergency signings due to injury and dead cap hits that they’ll take when cutting down the roster to 52 players.

Here’s where every NFL team stands as of March 21 when it comes to cap space. Note: cap space changes daily as teams sign and cut players.

After re-signing Marvin Lewis for two more seasons, many fans doubt whether the Bengals are really committed to winning. Here are five ways for the Bengals to prove them wrong.

As fans, we expected big changes this offseason after another losing season.

Even though the Bengals went 7-9 they looked down right bad all season. They lost plenty of games they should’ve won, and they got blown out more than a good team should. Mike Brown followed up the disappointing season by re-signing Marvin Lewis for two more years.

The only major changes to the coaching staff come via Paul Guenther being replaced By Teryl Austin and Frank Pollack replacing Paul Alexander.

How can they change the idea that we are getting a ticket for the same show?

Well, here are five ways that Patrick Carlisle thinks the Bengals can prove they are serious about winning in 2018.

Re-sign Tyler Eifert to a one-year deal

Sure, Tyler Kroft had a pretty good season filling in for Eifert. Kroft caught seven touchdowns on the season. The issue is how obvious it was that Andy Dalton and the Bengals offense missed Eifert. Kroft struggled to win one-on-one battles outside of the red zone, which is something Dalton relies on from his tight end when everything breaks down.

Eifert also drew a ton of attention from opposing defenses. When he was healthy, teams would have to make sure they were bracketing coverage on him, and when you combine that with having to double A.J. Green, either one of Dalton’s premiere targets were one-on-one or one of the supporting cast receivers had an easier time getting open.

Last season was filled with teams doubling Green and daring Dalton to beat them using the likes of Brandon LaFell and Tyler Boyd. There is the obvious injury risk with Eifert, but signing him to a one-year deal with incentives for being active could be something Eifert is forced to take in his situation.

Draft and play instant-impact rookies

Last year, the Bengals started to change this. When the team finally started playing guys like Joe Mixon and Carl Lawson, you saw a big difference in how well the team did. Both proved to be impact guys early on.

This is a rarity for the Bengals under Lewis. He likes to bring rookies along at a snail's pace. He comes from a time when it was better to let guys learn for most of a season before putting them out there, but times are changing. You see all over the league how many rookies are making instant impacts for their team, and it isn’t by accident either.

The first thing these teams do is draft players who are ready to play. The Bengals have been known for taking guys like Cedric Ogbuehi, who at the time fell in the draft because of his injury late during his college career. This meant that he had to sit and wait to heal, then rehab and then finally get his NFL legs under him.

That is all well and great when it works out, but when Ogbuehi failed to develop into an NFL tackle it looks really bad. This style of drafting also works when your team is deep with talent. Maybe you’re drafting an eventual replacement for a player in a couple of years, and you don’t have a glaring need at another position. The Bengals have several big needs that need to be filled before next season. They are going to have to fill a few of those early in the draft.

The next thing the Bengals will have to do is actually play those rookies. They will have rookie moments, but you have to believe they can learn from those and get better.

Get John Ross ready and involved

One of Bill Lazors’ most important tasks next season is to get Ross involved. Ross is still looking for his first career reception, and that is just unacceptable. The way the Bengals sat Ross in Week 2 after his fumble should be the example of what not to do next season.

This guy was a top 10 pick, and he needs to be able to show he can make an impact at a position the Bengals desperately need help at. Too often Lewis publicly criticized Ross for little mistakes that need to be worked through by actually playing in real games.

It is simple. The Bengals need someone who can beat one-on-one coverage created by Green, and the Bengals drafted Ross to be that guy. They should make sure he involved early and often during the offseason programs in order to get him and Dalton on the same page for the season.

Don’t be afraid of free agency

The Bengals are set to have roughly $35 million in cap space, and they could have more if they cut players like Adam Jones and Michael Johnson. By cutting those two, the Bengals could get $13 million more in cap space. They have also talked about extending Geno Atkins and Carlos Dunlap, which could be covered by easily by that $48 million. There would still be room for the Bengals to add some quality free agents.

Now we aren’t suggesting the Bengals go out and sign the top guys, but the Eagles showed you can bring in a number of second or third tier free agents and get a big return from them.

They will have to bring in some players to patch a few holes, so they aren’t drafting based solely on need.

Wheel and deal

They Bengals have been known for their low risk trades. Last season, they acquired Chris Smith from the Jaguars for a sixth round pick. He ended up being a great addition as he provided serious depth at pass rusher. They also traded away Marquis Flowers to the Patriots when it was clear that he was going to be cut.

They can expand this a little by getting rid of players that simply aren’t working for them. A great example of this would’ve been trading Jeremy Hill away last season. It was clear Mixon was going to be the guy as soon as the Bengals drafted him. It was also clear that Hill wasn’t going to be re-signed.

Considering Hill did have a period of success in this league, they probably could’ve turned him into a late draft pick instead of having to wait for a compensatory selection. That compensatory pick could end up being way lower than what the Bengals could’ve gotten.

The Bengals will also have to keep an ear open for cheap deals like they did with Smith this year. Last year the Eagles brought in Jay Ajayi for only a fourth-round pick, and he ended up being a a great addition to that run game. There may be a team looking to unload player like that at linebacker or offensive line this season.

A move like that could end up making a huge difference next season.

Will the Bengals cut ties with their aging veterans on defense?

The Cincinnati Bengals have some big roster decisions to make this offseason.

Among them is what to do with aging cornerback Adam Jones and defensive lineman Michael Johnson. Both players took steps back this past season and are over the age of 31, so their play will likely keep decreasing in the 2018 season.

That’s why NFL.com has both Jones and Johnson listed among their cut candidates in the AFC. The to Bengals are listed in the “on the bubble” tier, but they probably should be in the “strong candidates for release” category instead.

6-7) Adam Jones, CB, and Michael Johnson, DE, Cincinnati Bengals: On most teams, Jones and Johnson’s combined age (65 years old) and cap number ($13 million) would make them likely goners. But owner Mike Brown is more loyal to “his guys” than most, as the team’s coaching situation indicates.

That’s exactly what the case is in Cincinnati. All 31 other teams would cut Jones this offseason if they hadn’t already in 2016, which is really when the Bengals should have got rid of him after his offseason arrest. It’s time to move on from Pacman, but he’s one of Mike Brown’s guys, so most likely, he’ll be back again next season.

As for Johnson, a better case can be made for keep him, especially after he showed he could play well as a defensive tackle on passing downs last season. He’s not giving the Bengals much as an outside pass-rusher anymore, but he is still making an impact along the defensive line.

Depending on what the Bengals do in free agency and the draft should determine if he’s back. I would venture to say both Johnson and Jones are back next season, but perhaps Marvin Lewis having a bigger say in free agency will lead to a different outcome.

The veteran pass-catcher has brought a nice semblance of steadiness to the receiver group since Marvin Jones and Mohamed Sanu left. But, with young players waiting in the wings, could LaFell be on the chopping block?

The Bengals didn’t do any favors to their team, its quarterback or its fans over the past two offseasons. Cincinnati seemed to be content resting on its laurels, allowing Mohamed Sanu, Marvin Jones, Reggie Nelson, Andrew Whitworth, Kevin Zeitler and others walk in free agency in 2016 and 2017.

As a short-term remedy for the losses of Jones and Sanu, Cincinnati picked up veteran receiver Brandon LaFell in the spring of 2016 on a one-year deal. He ended up being second on the team in receptions (64) and yards (862), while leading the team in touchdown grabs with six.

He earned himself another two-year contract with the Bengals this past offseason because of his 2016 performance. He didn’t follow it up with as strong of a year in 2017, finishing with 52 catches for 548 yards and three touchdowns.

LaFell is still under contract this year, but he might be someone the team looks at releasing or re-structuring—particularly if they get enamored with someone on the open market.

Financial figures:

2018 salary: $4 million

2018 cap hit: $4 million

Heavy investments and upside in youngsters: Whoever it was truly calling the shots in last year’s draft made it known that they wanted the Bengals to get younger and faster. And, no one in the class, or the history of the NFL Combine for that matter, was faster than John Ross.

Cincinnati used their No. 9 overall selection to grab him, with the hope being that he would immediately spark an offense that struggled in 2016. Unfortunately, Ross’s rookie season was all but a waste and everyone is waiting to see what he’ll do in year two.

The Bengals also spent a fourth round pick on Josh Malone, who flashed a little bit in 2017. He has good straight-line speed, as does Cody Core, who the team apparently likes a lot. Tyler Boyd came on strong at the end of the year and is effective when used properly.

Throw in the possibility of adding someone in free agency and/or the draft and that position room gets awfully crowded.

Is he worth the dough?: Essentially, at a $5 million salary in 2017, LaFell received $1.67 per touchdown catch, or about $1 million per 100 yards receiving. That isn’t how you’re necessarily supposed to look at a player and their contract, but the point still kind of stands.

If he was making the $4.5 million per year average he’s currently signed at while bringing in 2016-type of numbers, that would be all well and good. But, he isn’t, and we must not forget that A.J. Green was hurt at the end of that year, pushing LaFell into a more prominent role. Thus, the 2016 spike in production through his relatively pedestrian NFL career.

Zero dead cap hit: If you can release a player to free up space while not getting penalized, that’s a plus. Currently, that’s the situation the Bengals are in with LaFell and his contract.

If the Bengals need space to re-sign Tyler Eifert, extend other internal guys and/or go after an outside target, shedding LaFell’s penalty-free contract would likely be one of the first places to look.

Why he should stick around:

Manageable salary and numbers: Really, in the grand scheme of things, $4 million isn’t a lot for an NFL team to swallow in this day and age. And, though many feel that other options would be more productive opposite of Green, LaFell’s salary is in the range of high draft picks still in their rookie deals, as well as veterans like Chris Hogan, Seth Roberts and Rishard Matthews.

And, if the Bengals sit on their hands in outside free agency again, which many suspect they might, hanging on to LaFell and his contract won’t be a big deal. It might not sit well with fans, but the front office will likely once again keep the team out of cap hell.

Marvin Lewis loves his veterans: For better or for worse, Lewis loves to play veterans with lower upside than youngsters. He wants to make sure his rookies know “how to practice the right way”, while not preferring the possible mental mistakes that young players sometimes provide.

John Ross was Lewis’ example from last year, while even current stars like Geno Atkins and Carlos Dunlap weren’t immune to Lewis’ preferential treatment of the older guys back in 2010. It’s an irritating trait of the old-school head coach and one that usually gives more minuses than plusses.

By all accounts, LaFell does everything asked of him, is a team player and is a great presence in the receiver room. Throw in some production and it’s easy to see why Lewis likes the veteran wideout on his roster.

Unknowns with the youngsters: We can sit here and second-guess the coaching staff’s decision to bench Ross, Malone and Core, but the truth is we’re not on those sidelines, nor are we witnessing their habits on a daily basis. Obviously, when a season is heading down the tubes, it would be beneficial for the club to get these guys on the field more often, but, for various reasons that wasn’t the case in 2017.

Ross still appears to be in Lewis’ doghouse and no one knows how long he’ll be in there, or how crushed his confidence is at the moment. Malone really had one nice play last year (touchdown versus the Colts) and Core has largely been relegated to special teams.

Yes, the team has Green, the All-World receiver out there, but we can’t say for absolute certainty that any of these young guys can step in and immediately provide a better alternative to LaFell. Not without getting them on the field that is, and that would take Lewis eschewing his above-mentioned preference to do so.

Between his age, run-ins with the law and talented high picks behind him, Adam Jones’ time might be running out with the Bengals.

Since he arrived in 2010, Adam “Pacman” Jones has been a pleasant surprise for the Cincinnati Bengals. Whether it has been in locking down a starting cornerback position or providing electricity in the return game, Jones’ eight-year run in The Queen City has marked a massive turnaround for a guy who was once viewed as the NFL’s poster boy for off-field issues.

Jones has had a couple of run-ins with the law since joining the Bengals, but it’s nothing compared to his early years in the league. In his eight years with Cincinnati, Jones has played in 104 total games, for an average of 13 games per season.

Given how the early years of his NFL career played out, one must give some semblance of kudos to Jones for a pretty big lifestyle turnaround. He’s had a couple of issues since joining the Bengals in 2010, but he’s been a much different guy since his days with the Titans.

There are some factors playing against Jones’ staying in Cincinnati this year. The Bengals aren’t usually creative with the salary cap and rarely need additional space, for a couple of reasons, so this discussion might be moot. But, with his salary, unknown role in 2018 and age, Jones could end up being a cap casualty.

Financial Figures:

2018 salary: $6.45 million

2018 salary cap hit: $6.45 million

Talent in the position group: After Jones went down with a groin injury, it paved the way for William Jackson to get even more playing time. As his role grew, it became apparent that Jackson has the ability to be this team’s best cornerback.

While he has primarily played in the slot this year, Darqueze Dennard also shined with an increased role last year—both on the inside and on the perimeter. Even though Jones missed seven games this year, Cincinnati still finished with the No. 8 defense against the pass.

Age and potential injury issues: Aside from landing on Injured Reserve to end 2018, Jones was seen getting nicked up frequently before the groin injury that ended his season. He also apparently had a recent surgical procedure and it might be a sign that 11 years of NFL football has taken its toll on him.

Jones will be turning 35 years old shortly after this season kicks off. While he still shows quite a bit of his great athleticism on kick returns and at corner, there’s no doubt that Jones is at the end of his career.

Really low dead cap number: The $666,668 dead cap number is very manageable when possibly shedding his $6.45 million off of the books. If the Bengals choose to go after someone with a hefty free agency price tag or need more space should they franchise tag someone like Tyler Eifert, the penalty for releasing Jones would be minimal.

Why he should stick around:

Still contributing at a relatively high level: Jones had an interception off of Ben Roethlisberger and four total passes defended in his shortened 2017 season. Though he can be a bit of a gambler at corner sometimes, Jones has the ability to still play decently on defense.

And, even though Alex Erickson seems to have a stranglehold on the kick return duties, the Bengals to tinker with Jones on punts. He had six returns last year, but racked up a whopping 21.8 yards per return. He was also oh-so-close to having a return for a touchdown last year, but it was called back.

Does Cincinnati even need the space?: One of the more interesting talking points this offseason is in the possibility of the Bengals being more aggressive in outside free agency. Given his recent comments and the team’s 28-year history under Mike Brown’s reign, we’re skeptical that’s going to change by leaps and bounds this year.

Because of that, there might not be a need for Jones to be released. He could be a valuable, albeit expensive insurance policy as both Jackson and Dennard have had their share of injuries in their short careers.

He’s a Mike Brown favorite: Brown hasn’t been shy about his fascination for reclamation projects. It’s why he stuck by Chris Henry throughout his unfortunate issues and continues to do so with Jones.

Though Brown recently harped on the near-symbiotic working relationship he and Lewis have, it’s evident that he’s still calling quite a few of the shots. Given that he has a soft spot for Jones, we believe he’s going to let the veteran corner play out the life of his contract.
