On this week’s episode, we look at a number of topics, including the piling up of injuries, Hue Jackson and our doling out of midseason awards.

Even though the Cincinnati Bengals are on a break this week, that doesn’t mean that the OBI crew is resting! We had a busy episode this week, as the team prepares to enter a treacherous last half of the season.

Here are some of the topics John Sheeran and I discussed this week, as the Bengals rest up on their bye:

What are the takeaways from the roller coaster win over the Buccaneers?

Was the furious comeback by Tampa Bay strictly because of the Bengals’ internal issues, or that they were surprised by a quarterback change in the middle of the game?

What is the impact of Carl Lawson’s season-ending injury going forward?

Should the Bengals have made a move before the trade deadline?

Using hindsight, keeping Brandon LaFell may have actually helped the team right now.

Who are the midseason award winners?

How do we think the Bengals will fare the rest of the season?

Breaking tackles and influencing second level defenders lead to breakout performance for the Bengals running back.

Joe Mixon finally had his long awaited breakout game this season. The Bengals ran the ball effectively against the Buccaneers, especially in the first half when they fed Mixon the ball regularly. When the run game struggled, it was occasionally because a defensive lineman beat his block, but the biggest issue was not getting the linebackers blocked. When the linebackers were taken care of by the offensive line, wide receivers, or Mixon himself, the Bengals had a field day in the run game.

On this play, tight end C.J. Uzomah reaches and cuts the back-side defensive end. Left tackle Cordy Glenn reaches the 3-technique and works up to the linebacker on the left side. Trey Hopkins blocks the nose tackle and Alex Redmond clears out the linebacker on the right side. Right tackle Bobby Hart blocks out on the play-side defensive end.

Mixon takes the handoff initially following the same bath as Redmond on the Zone run, than cuts back off Boling’s block at the second level, This is key because if prevents the safety from making the play as he is taken out by Boling’s block. Hopkins seems to be having some trouble with the nose tackle, but all in all this is a great rep for the Bengals and results in a touchdown.

This is the same play earlier in the game, Once again the guards do a great job of getting u to the linebackers with speed. This makes a big difference when running zone. Hopkins effectively reaches Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea, but his strength and speed almost allows him to make a play on Mixon. Despite this, Mixon is able to break through for a gain of 15 yards.

On the first play of the game the Bengals ran a zone run to the left. The offensive line never really got to the inside linebacker, but Mixon’s action to the left sucked him in and made him irrelevant to the play when Mixon cut it back to the right. Buccaneers Linebacker Lavonte David was unblocked, but Mixon hit the back-side with speed and forced the missed tackle and he is able to pick up 18 yards on the run. This is the difference between Mixon and a guy like Jeremy Hill. Mixon can make things happen even when defenders are unaccounted for.

This play is another example of how Mixon can set up blocks. Here he runs straight up the gut and finds no where to go. It takes a couple of jump cuts for him to get to the outside, but selling the run inside first has allowed Glenn to get up to linebacker Adarius Taylor which springs Mixon for a 6-yard gain.

There used to be another running back in the AFC North whose patience was frequently talked about. I don’’t remember who that was, but now Mixon’s patience is the benchmark. Hopkins and left guard Christian Westerman rock defensive tackle Beau Allen back so far that he ends up on the edge and unblocked. Wide receiver Tyler Boyd fails to get to slot cornerback De’Vante Harris (no not Davontae Harris, this is a different guy) who joins Allen on the edge. Mixon jump cuts to the outside and as Allen and Harris simultaneously approach he cuts it up field breaking both tackles. After failing to make the block on Harris, Boyd blocks the inside linebacker, which is fortuitous because Hopkins is a little late to that party. Mixon ends up gaining 9 yards on a play that probably should have gone for nothing.

This play is basically a designed bounce for Mixon whose initially path is pretty tight. He runs quickly cuts out to follow Hopkins who is pulling to the outside to seal the play-side linebacker. Boling led the way, pulling out to block the slot defender and Hart worked quickly to the second level to the back-side linebacker. The result is Mixon’s longest run of the day for 43 yards.

This is great play design with the wide receivers playing a big role. A.J. Green comes in motion and effectively holds the back-side linebacker with the threat of the Jet Sweep. Boyd and Alex Erickson crack with Boyd on the defensive end and Erickson on the play-side linebacker. Glenn and Boling pull out in front of the toss to Mixon. Boling gets pushed back by the defensive end, but Glenn helps Erickson with the linebacker. Mixon hits the edge and gains 13 yards on the run.

When the Bengals are able to account for the linebackers in the run game, Mixon is a dominant player. Lineman getting to the second level with speed are effective, but receivers and pullers can get the job done as well. Mixon is dangerous on the edge and it would be interesting to see the Bengals give line him up at wide receiver and get him the ball on some Jet Sweeps.

It is time to roast Teryl Austin as bad as his defense.

The Bengals defense hasn’t been very good this season. Sure, they have come up with turnovers when the game needed them most (sometimes), but there is no denying that Cincinnati has one of the worst defenses in the NFL. Despite this, defensive coordinator Teryl Austin defends his unit’s performance by looking at the team’s 5-3 record.

The Bengals defense is banged up, sure, but there is still more than enough talent on that side of field to be better then they’ve been this season. Austin’s comments would be like the dumb kid in class saying, “I may have gotten an F, but we averaged a C as a whole class.” Going into a bye week, it is just extremely frustrating to hear comments like these. Especially after the last two weeks when the defense has been one of the worst in the NFL, giving up more than 500 yards in back-to-back games.

That is down right terrible. The Bengals are lucky to be 1-1 and not 0-2 after those two games. Many, including Austin, will point to the four turnovers against the Bucs as a reason to believe in the unit, but it isn’t that impressive when you realize that Winston has been downright awful since returning from his three game suspension. By the way, he is now tied for first in the NFL in interceptions (10) despite missing the first three games of the season.

You could tell (by the way) that Ryan Fitzpatrick came in and made quick work of the Bengals defense and the Bengals lucked out by having Winston play most of the contest. If you go back and look at most of the interceptions, they came off wildly inaccurate throws that most NFL quarterbacks don’t make.

You could also go back to Austin’s ill-advised decision to blitz everyone and go man-to-man when the Steelers just entered field goal range for a possible game-winning field goal back in Week 6. Of course as soon as the Bengals showed the pressure was coming, Ben Roethlisberger audibled to a pick play to get Antonio Brown a free run to the middle of the field and a game-winning touchdown.

Now some of you might say that is just nit picking, but you can look at the numbers. Through Week 8 of the season, the Bengals are 29th in scoring defense, 26th against the run and dead last against the pass and in total yards allowed per game. That is a terrible defense no matter how you slice it.

Even when you look at where they rank as far as turnovers, it doesn’t really excuse just how bad the defense has been as a whole. The Bengals have forced 14 turnovers in eight games, which has them tied for ninth in the NFL. That sounds good, but 18 teams have at least 11 turnovers this season. Also four of the 13 teams with as many turnovers as the Bengals have already had their bye week, which means they’ve had one less game to improve that number than Cincinnati.

Changes were promised this offseason when the Bengals hired Austin. He promised to utilize his players’ strengths, but even that’s been a stretch. He only just started having his cornerbacks travel with certain receivers after the Chiefs would line up whoever they wanted to get the ball in the slot due to Darqueze Dennard’s absence. The NFL knows, the Bengals have no one who can cover the intermediate middle of the field.

It’s baffling to see the linebackers in coverage. Mind you, none of them have been advertised as coverage linebackers, but at this point we have to blame the Bengals’ organization more than Austin for that as they’ve done nothing to effectively improve that aspect of the linebacker position. The linebackers either end up just standing in a zone waiting for someone to catch a pass in front of them, or all of them play with shallow depth and are unaware of the routes behind them.

There is plenty wrong with how this defense has been run this season. You can divide blame between personnel, injuries and coaching. But Austin’s comments are downright disrespectful to our intelligence as a fan base.

It’s a far cry from where the Bengals were when the 2018 season began.

When the 2018 NFL season began, the Bengals were tied with the Buccaneers for the worst odds to win the Super Bowl.

Ironically enough, the Bengals just beat the Buccaneers in thrilling fashion, and it now has the good guys’ Super Bowl odds rising as they hit the bye week.

On Aug. 31, the Bengals had +9000 odds to win the Super Bowl. Last week, that number was +4500. After the 37-34 thriller against Tampa Bay, Cincinnati now has +4000 odds to win it all, which are the 16th-best odds.

Sure, being the middle in the middle of the regular season is by no means the best spot to be, but it’s a far cry from where this team was in the offseason. Many experts projected the Bengals to finish 2018 with one of the 3-5 worst records in football.

But at 5-3 and having a favorable second-half schedule, the Bengals are in prime position to finish with a winning record and one of 12 spots in the NFL playoffs.

Sure, the record could be better (see Pittsburgh loss), but it could just as easily be worse (see Atlanta, Indianapolis and Tampa Bay wins). The Bengals have a lot of issues they need to fix, but fans should be happy with how far this team has come after back-to-back losing seasons.

It was turnover or bust for the Bengals defense against the Buccaneers.

If a defense has 4 interceptions in one game, it sounds like they had a pretty good day. Conversely, most would agree that a defense giving up 450 passing yards did not do well.

So what can we make of the Bengals defensive performance in Week 8 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers?

Since before defensive coordinator Teryl Austin was hired this offseason, head coach Marvin Lewis has emphasized that the defense needed to get more turnovers. Austin has been under fire from fans over the last few weeks, but has been steadfast about his commitment to getting turnovers defensively.

Trying to create turnovers can be a risky venture. Bengals players have missed tackles this season when trying to strip the ball rather than secure the tackle. Jumping a route can result in an interception or a long touchdown, and to some extent that is the cost of doing business.

These losses can be mitigated with film work and game planning, but there will always be some degree of risk associated with creating turnovers. Here are a few plays from Week 8 that show the good and the bad of the Bengals’ aggressive style.

After the Bengals turned the ball over on downs in their first possession, the Buccaneers marched down the field and were in scoring position. Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans ran a vertical route from the slot on the bottom of the screen. Because the Bengals had two high safeties, Evans bent his route in to the middle, rather than running straight at Bengals safety Shawn Williams. Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston seemingly did not make the same adjustment:

Williams was a bit closer to the line of scrimmage pre-snap than free safety Jessie Bates which may have given Winston the impression that Williams would role down. Williams, who had dropped a near pick earlier in the drive, backpedaled and read Winston’s throw, breaking on it for the interception.

Let’s Fast forward to the fourth quarter. The Bengals are holding on to a two-score lead with just over 10 minutes to play. A score every five minutes is certainly doable for the Buccaneers, but the Bengals still have the advantage. The one thing can not afford is to give up a quick touchdown.

On the snap, cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick jams Evans and then allows him to work up to the safety, Williams, as Kirkpatrick correctly turns his attention to tight end Cameron Brate in the flat. Evans stems his route in making it appear to be a skinny post. Williams breaks on the route looking to make another interception. Evans then cuts directly up field, easily running past Williams. When he catches relief quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick’s pass, he has a 7-yard lead on Williams and takes it 72 yards for the touchdown:

This is a Cover 4 look with Bates as the safety at the top of the screen. Winston basically stares at Adam Humphries who is the slot receiver on the top of the screen.
There was another time earlier in the game when Bates was slow to get out in Cover 4 because he was hard reading the quarterback. On this play DeSean Jackson is lined up at the bottom of the screen with William Jackson lined up over him. On the snap, Jackson works straight up field, quickly eating away William Jackson’s cushion. DeSean Jackson cuts to the post and because Bates was sitting hoping to make a play on an underneath pass he has seven yards on the rookie when he catches the pass. William Jackson is also out of position, and the play results in a 60-yard touchdown for the Buccaneers.

We’re switching up our usual awards this week, but still need your votes and comments to determine the winners!

It was a whirlwind game for the Bengals against the Buccaneers on Sunday, as they relented what was once a 21-point lead. Even so, there were a bunch of major contributors in the team’s 37-34.

We’ve got a couple of different awards than usual, so cast your vote and sound off on your winners in each!

Offensive MVP

This award is pretty obvious—it goes to the biggest contributor on the offensive side of the ball. In the first half, Cincinnati had quite a few big plays from some of their biggest stars.

Andy Dalton: Though the offense hit a major lull in the second half, Dalton had a pretty solid game. He threw for 280 yards, two touchdowns and didn’t commit a turnover. He also led his 24th game-winning drive in his career, as he led the team down for the winning field goal as time expired.

A.J. Green: The star wideout had a slow beginning to the game, but did have a critical, highlight-reel touchdown catch in the first half. He was also Dalton’s go-to guy in crunch time, securing two big catches for 34 yards to set Randy Bullock up for a manageable field goal attempt.

Joe Mixon: Like the rest of the offense, Mixon trailed off in the second half, but had an absolutely superb first half. He finished with 123 rushing yards on 21 carries (a 5.9 average) and two touchdowns. He also added three receptions for 15 yards.

Per ESPN Stats & Info: Joe Mixon's 114 rushing yards are the most in the 1st half by any player this season and most by a Bengal in a 1st half since Cedric Benson in 2008. Mixon is the 2nd player w/ 100 rushing yards and 2 rushing TDs in a half this season along with Alvin Kamara
— Katherine Terrell (@Kat_Terrell) October 28, 2018

Tyler Boyd: This kid has to be in consideration for Offensive MVP through the first half of the season. Without Dalton having John Ross, Tyler Eifert and Tyler Kroft at his disposal, Boyd has become a favorite target of Dalton’s through the first eight games. Sunday afternoon was no exception, as Boyd notched nine receptions for 138 yards and a score.

Defensive MVP

Cincinnati’s defense collapsed in the second half, but they did net four turnovers and five sacks on the afternoon. Which defender had the biggest impact?

Carlos Dunlap: Though the defense faltered quite a bit, Dunlap had a nice afternoon. He logged two sacks, three tackles-for-loss and five total tackles.

Jessie Bates III: The kid is a bit of a gambler, but has still made some “wow” plays in his rookie season. One such play was a pick-six of Jameis Winston in the third quarter, which ended up making a huge difference in what became a tight game. He also had six total tackles and three defended passes.

Shawn Williams: The veteran safety made a big play early on when he intercepted Winston in the end zone. He also had three defended passes and seven total tackles on the afternoon.

Jordan Evans: The youngster had a breakout game on Sunday against the Bucs. He had 1.5 sacks, an interception and led the team in tackles with 11. The linebacker corps was thin this week, so it was good to see the second-year guy make some big plays.

Unsung Hero of the Week

This award is for players whose contributions go overlooked and/or for those who step up in the wake of injury and/or ineffectiveness.

Sam Hubbard: The youngster had some ups and downs in the contest, but also came through on some occasions. He had an increase in snaps because of an injury to Carl Lawson, but made the most of some of them. Hubbard finished had a sack and five total tackles.

Geno Atkins: Though big No. 97 failed to make the stat sheet in the “wow” categories, but still made a big impact. On a couple of occasions, Atkins opened up pressure opportunities for others, while also forcing three holding penalties.

Preston Brown: Cincinnati’s defense really took their foot off of the gas pedal—especially when Ryan Fitzpatrick entered the game—but Brown played well early. He had seven total tackles and an interception.

Jordan Franks: The undrafted rookie free agent was called up this week with injuries to Tyler Eifert and Tyler Kroft. And, when C.J. Uzomah also briefly left the game, the Bengals were left with Franks and Matt Lengel. Franks had a huge 32-yard catch, his only of the afternoon, on the team’s first scoring drive of the day.

Randy Bullock: The veteran kicker missed a huge extra point, but greatly atoned for the miss at the last second. He was called upon to make a 44-yard field goal to win the game and he nailed it in a swirling wind. He had seven points in the game.

Dud of the Week

William Jackson: It’s been a disappointing campaign for Jackson, who officially stepped into a bigger starting role this year. Most pundits said he’d be ready for a breakout campaign in 2018, but he struggled a bit on Sunday, allowing a 60-yard touchdown to DeSean Jackson.

Dre Kirkpatrick: The veteran corner had a couple of nice plays in Week 8, but overall, he struggled mightily against Mike Evans. He was tasked with covering Evans, but the star wide receiver led all pass-catchers in Week 8 with 179 yards, on six catches and a touchdown reception.

Bobby Hart: The team’s right tackle was having trouble with Jason Pierre-Paul on Sunday, even though the pass-rusher moved around a bit. Still, Pierre-Paul had two sacks of Andy Dalton on Sunday.

Lineman of the Week

Geno Atkins: Unfortunately for interior linemen, they don’t always get the recognition that others receive for their contributions. Atkins was a force on Sunday for other reasons, but only logged one assisted tackle.

Carlos Dunlap: As mentioned above, Dunlap had a monster game. He had two sacks, three tackles-for-loss and five total tackles.

Cordy Glenn: On more than one occasion, Glenn was seen pulling on some of the biggest runs of the afternoon. He also allowed minimal pressure, as it was Hart who allowed Pierre-Paul get his two sacks in the contest.

Clint Boling: When Boling was available in the first half, the offense was totally clicking. However, when he was forced out of playing with a back injury, the offense not-so-coincidentally stopped being effective.
