The crew digs in to analyze the Teryl Austin firing, Marvin Lewis’ takeover of the defense, the hiring of Hue Jackson and the rematch against the Ravens.

After the Cincinnati Bengals were once again embarrassed by another one of the NFL’s elite teams, they went to work in an effort to re-focus on the postseason. What transpired over the subsequent two days were a lot of polarizing news.

Teryl Austin was out as the defensive coordinator with Marvin Lewis becoming an unlikely de facto play-caller on that side of the ball. Feeling as if he needed another set of eyes on the sidelines with Austin’s departure, Lewis hired his old friend, Hue Jackson.

To say that there was a ton on tap this week would be an understatement. Here are some of the topics John Sheeran and Anthony Cosenza discussed on the most recent episode of OBI:

Was the firing of Teryl Austin necessary and was he the root of all of the problems on defense?

What level of improvement on that side of the ball should we expect with Lewis taking over the major coordinating duties?

Does Jackson have the ability to truly help the Bengals in an ambiguous role?

With all of the attempted fixes applied to the defense, is the microscope on Bill Lazor going forward?

Is Lamar Jackson poised to give the Bengals fits on Sunday?

Between the staffing changes and players coming in and out of the lineup with injuries, does Cincinnati have enough to get a much-needed win against the Ravens?

It’s been a crazy week for the Cincinnati Bengals, full of changes. John Sheeran and Anthony Cosenza examine them all, while also previewing the Week 11 rematch against the Ravens.

Have you caught up with all of the news this week? In just a couple of days, the Cincinnati Bengals have made national headlines from a variety of interesting moves.

Will Marvin Lewis be able to be successful as the head coach and defensive coordinator? What impact and role will Hue Jackson have on the Bengals for the final seven games? And, most importantly, were these moves that kept Cincinnati in the playoff hunt?

John Sheeran and Anthony Cosenza attempt to find answers to these questions, while also previewing the upcoming rematch against the Ravens. Helping us do that is Bill Lericos from SB Nation’s Baltimore Beatdown.

We’ll also be taking listener questions on the air, which should be particularly interesting this week. You can submit them in the comment thread below, via the YouTube chat in the above-embedded video and/or by text or call at (949) 542-6241.

First-round pick Billy Price’s return to center had it’s share of good and bad moments against the Saints, but his teammate to the left of him had a day to forget.

The offensive line is the one group where you don’t want to have much change throughout the season, even if that change is deemed to be positive beforehand.

Despite gaining back a starter against the Saints on Sunday, the Bengals offensive line took a big sized step backwards in their 37-point defeat to the NFC’s current No. 2 seed, but not in the way that was expected.

Coming into the game, the Saints ranked first in run defense and near the bottom in pass defense. Yet, the Bengals ran for 110 yards on just 16 carries and failed to eclipse 174 net passing yards. The Saints were even missing one of their best defensive lineman in first-round pick Marcus Davenport, and the Saints pass rush still had their way for nearly the entire game. I decided to look at two potential cruxes that may’ve caused this unanticipated dichotomy.

Billy Price’s return to center was a solid one, but it came with some rust as well. A change in not one, but two starters seemed to have caused some miscommunication in pass protection from time to time, but New Orleans’ ability to pressure quarterback Andy Dalton was attributed more to a lack of cohesion amongst the Bengals pass protectors.

It started off well for Cincinnati’s front five, as running back Joe Mixon and the Bengals offense drove down the field with ease on their first drive of the game. This run was a great mix of blocking and play design.

Upon obliterating the front side defenders, the jet motion from wide receiver John Ross got the linebackers flowing against the grain and gave Mixon a prime opportunity to finesse through to the open field. Price clearly wanted to get after the 3-technique David Onyemata, but failing to get his hands on any second level defender almost knocked the play from great to good. Luckily, the pre-snap deception schemed Mixon some extra yards regardless.

I still will never get tired talking about reach blocks against front-side shaded nose tackles. I was especially excited to see it from Price because it was an issue at Ohio State, and also during the preseason. Clearly Price has been working on it while he was recovering from his foot injury, and even though the run went for no yardage, the work Price does here is commendable. However...

That first play repeated itself later on in the game and the Bengals were hurt by it. We can appreciate Price’s willingness to look for work when he has no defender to work against at the snap, but he’s gotta know he’s responsible for keeping the A-gap clean — it is the designed point of attack after all.

All Price has to do is quickly read that the 3-technique is staying in his lane, and move up the the linebacker. He already has a clear path, he’s just gotta recognize the situation better next time.

Price’s comeback was obviously a storyline that people had interest in, but my main takeaway from the game was how much left guard Clint Boling got abused in pass protection against the Saints interior defensive line. On this play, the Bengals don’t have any attractive options downfield for Dalton to throw to, and the Saints send a delayed blitz attacking the B-gap between Boling and Price.

This could’ve been an example of the communication that Price and Boling need to re-establish after Price missed all that time due to injury. This next play on the other hand, well, it had nothing to do with miscommunication.

I’ll admit it, this was bittersweet to watch over and over again. I’m such a big Sheldon Rankins fan, who is the pass-rusher that completely rocked back Boling for the Saints’ fourth sack of the game. His process is what makes this bull rush go from okay to incredible, and even a seasoned vet in Boling sometimes takes the L. Talent will always win out, and Rankins has talent in spades.

To be fair to Boling, he could also still be not quite 100 percent after exiting the previous game against the Buccaneers with a back injury. Regardless, Boling was out there, and the team expects better out of him.

At the risk of dwelling too much on a game so embarrassingly lopsided, we’ll just stop it right here and start moving on to the next week. In specifics, the Bengals playing the Ravens this upcoming Sunday will be such a prime opportunity for the defensive line to get back on track. This will be the first time Marvin Lewis is calling the plays for the defensive in well over a decade, and he’ll do it against the team he was an acclaimed defensive coordinator for.

He may also be game-planning to stop an electric rookie quarterback in Lamar Jackson, who could be making his first start of his career depending on starting quarterback Joe Flacco’s health. How Lewis is able to put the pressure on either quarterback will be huge in deciding if the Bengals will be staying above .500 by this time next week.

Cincinnati played a season-high eight rookies against the Saints on Sunday.

All hands were on deck in the Bengals monumental letdown at home against the Saints, including all eight rookies on the active roster.

For the first time all season, the seven draft picks to make the initial 53-man roster were all active and played at least one snap from scrimmage, along with the one undrafted free agent to get promoted to the active roster this season.

Here’s our rookie report for the Bengals 51-14 defeat to the Saints.

Billy Price

Even without their first-round pick Marcus Davenport at defensive end, the Saints pass rush got the better of the Bengals offensive line in Price’s first game back. Fortunately for the Bengals’ first-round pick, he came away with a mostly clean game. The run blocking for Joe Mixon and Giovani Bernard was solid, even though they rarely got a chance to display it after the first quarter when the game was still competitive.

Those around Price, however, underperformed to their standards. Left tackle Cordy Glenn and left guard Clint Boling allowed several pressures against the right-sided Saints pass rushers, and even right guard Trey Hopkins looked out of whack in his first game at the position this season.

The cohesion between the group needs some time to re-adjust with Price back in the mix and if that was the cause for the troubles, then so be it. Price showed some definite rust in between it all, but it was good to see him out there moving regardless.

Jessie Bates

Per usual, Bates ended up extremely active as a tackler for the Bengals porous defense. The Bengals’ free safety finished with just four solo tackles, but added on seven assisted tackles for a combined 11. In coverage, Bates was untested for the vast majority of the game, as Saints quarterback Drew Brees only threw four of his 25 passes beyond 15 yards down the field, and the three that were completed weren’t in Bates’ coverage.

It turns out that playing Jameis Winston isn’t as easy as playing Brees — Hell, or Ryan Fitzpatrick for that matter. The Bengals secondary looks to have had major communication issues during this historically bad stretch they’re on. Hopefully things get more clear for them with Marvin Lewis taking over as the de facto defensive coordinator, and Bates’ play improves because of it.

Sam Hubbard

As expected, it was defensive end Jordan Willis who got the first crack at replacing Carl Lawson as the team’s nickel edge rusher opposite of Carlos Dunlap and not Hubbard. By my count, Hubbard didn’t even see any snaps inside; he played most of the snaps in relief of Michael Johnson at right defensive end. While there, Hubbard didn’t see many pass-rushing snaps, and the rest of the Bengals’ defensive line was run over by the Saints offensive line in both the run and pass.

The needle didn’t move much at all for Hubbard in this game, as his role seems largely unaffected by Lawson’s season-ending injury.

Malik Jefferson

For the first time in his nine-game career, Jefferson got to play defense instead of just special teams. The bad news was, his team was down by multiple scores when he came into the game in the fourth quarter. He ended up with notching three tackles in the eight snaps he was on the field for, all from starting at a different alignment at linebacker.

pic.twitter.com/b1pCvZWfYa
— not kevin durant (@nevkinturand) November 13, 2018

Unless the Bengals are down by five scores late in the second half of another game soon, we can’t expect Jefferson to emerge as a serious candidate for playing time — Jordan Evans and Vincent Rey’s struggles be damned. Jefferson couldn’t even get into the game until it was clearly over, and it’s not an indictment on him necessarily. Jefferson got plenty of time on the kickoff return team though, so there’s that.

Mark Walton

With Giovani Bernard back into the fold, Walton was all but nonexistent in the Bengals offense. He saw two of the 43 snaps on offense in relief of Joe Mixon and Bernard, and both involved him blocking in some manner.

<div data-anthem-component="readmore" data-anthem-component-data='{"stories":[{"title":"Hue Jackson rejoining Bengals coaching staff, per report","url":"https://www.cincyjungle.com/2018/11/12/18089924/nfl-news-hue-jackson-rejoining-bengals-coaching-staff-per-report-browns"},{"title":"Stephen A. He did play the most special teams in one game as he’s played all year with eight, and we should expect him to play around that number for the remaining of the year if he’ll be sidelined all game on offense.

Darius Phillips

Like Bates, Phillips was spared from Brees’ wrath, as he was only targeted once — which resulted in a three-yard gain. His play has evened out nicely the more he’s played, and for as long as Darqueze Dennard is nursing his shoulder injury, Phillips will continue to gain more in-game experience.

Auden Tate

It appears that the Bengals offense without A.J. Green does not feature much of Tate. The end of the game looked a lot like a preseason game, so naturally that’s when Tate entered the game.

The Bengals second touchdown drive featured seven plays, with Tate aligned as the left wide receiver for most of them. He ran three routes, and received one target that went incomplete off of his hands.

Some will call it a drop, some would call it a bad throw from backup quarterback Jeff Driskel (it was more so the latter). Regardless, it was a little disappointing to not see Tate out with the starters, but the team’s reluctance to give him any meaningful snaps was not surprising at all. Wide receiver Josh Malone’s hamstring injury is something to monitor this week, as his health will likely determine Tate’s game status with A.J. Green still sidelined with a bad foot.

Jordan Franks

Just like their Week 8 game against the Buccaneers, the Bengals trotted out Franks for one passing play against the Saints. Only this time, Franks was the target of the play. He once again stuck to special teams as Matt Lengel maintained his status as the No. 2 tight end. As soon as Tyler Kroft returns to practice, Franks figures to be sitting on the bench full-time. When that is, no one knows, but Franks won’t get any meaningful opportunities to stay on the field.

The Bengals inactive list featured exclusively veterans, which allowed for all eight first-year players to dress and play on Sunday. Hopefully next week’s game against the Baltimore Ravens will feature a couple of those players that were inactive, which would likely take out a couple rookies from the dress list.

Price will also be playing in just his fourth career game as we reached the middle of November, which will also be his second career meeting with the Ravens’ interior defensive line. The Ravens may also be starting a rookie of their own at quarterback in Lamar Jackson, which will be something Lewis’ young defense will be keeping tabs on all week as well.

Apart from the unmitigated disaster that is the defense, other players on offense should be given expanded roles.

When the Bengals lose, and look awful doing it, we just want to move on as quickly as possible.

The Bengals did just that following their 51-14 defeat to the Saints, as they moved on from their first-year defensive coordinator Teryl Austin. The Bengals’ defense was remarkably bad for the third week in a row, and in an effort to salvage the season, the Bengals decided to part ways with Austin after only nine games with the team.

Austin is not the only one whose job was not being done properly, which is how the season has spiraled out of control so quickly. Injuries are certainly not helping, but if the Bengals really want to make the playoffs this year, changes need to come.

So, what have we learned about this team after their ninth game of the season?

Joe Mixon needs more touches

With A.J. Green now out until December, this offense is going to need to find someone else to lean on.

Joe Mixon did well against the Saints, as he averaged 5.5 yards per rush and 12 yards per reception. However, since the Bengals were behind for most of the game, Mixon only carried the ball 11 times. Even though almost every team in the NFL will abandon the run game when trailing by multiple scores, the Bengals should figure out how to feature it.

Without Green, Mixon is the best player on the field and needs to receive touches accordingly, even when trailing.

Just look back at the Cowboys in Week 9 against the Titans. During a tied game in the second half, the Cowboys slowly stopped running the ball, removing Ezekiel Elliott, their best player, from their game.

This isn’t a perfect example because the Bengals still have a better passing offense than the Cowboys even without Green. But the Bengals would do well to keep their best playmaker in the game.

The Bengals don’t even have to run the ball the whole time. Mixon and Giovani Bernard combined for 4 catches and 54 yards through the air. The running backs could cause more damage in the passing game if they were featured more.

With Green missing, Tyler Boyd likely being double covered, and John Ross frequently on a different page than Andy Dalton, Mixon could step up if he was given more opportunities.

Keep delivering the Jeff Driskel packages

Let’s be totally honest, the offense is way behind where they should be right now, even without Green. They should have been able to muster up more than 14 points (with seven of them coming in garbage time) against a defense that ranks 23rd in yards and scoring. If the Bengals’ can’t score against the Saints, then why not steal from their playbook?

Their third-string quarterback, Taysom Hill, is commonly used in gadget plays on offense as a quarterback, running back and receiver, as well as a kick returner and a coverage man on all of their kickoffs and punts. The Bengals backup quarterback, Jeff Driskel, is also extremely athletic and should be able to operate in the offense like Hill.

One reason that the Saints are more willing to use Hill than the Bengals are to use Driskel is because they also have Teddy Bridgewater on the bench. Driskel is the only active backup quarterback on the Bengals’ roster, so if he is injured then the Bengals will be hurting at the position.

But the Bengals can afford to add some spice to the offense. On Driskel’s first snap of the game in the first quarter, he kept the ball and ran for eight yards. He didn’t reappear until the fourth quarter. Even though there was a little trickery involved when Driskel replaced Dalton as the signal-caller late in the game, he still had the team’s longest run of the day with a 27-yard score, showing off his athleticism by running faster than any other quarterback in the NFL this season.

So if the Bengals want to make more of a splash on the scoreboard, implementing more read-option plays for Driskel could add some razzle-dazzle to the vanilla Bengals’ offense. At the very least, the Bengals could do it more than once a game.

More receivers need to step up

A.J. Green is a future Hall of Famer, and naturally will be impossible to replace.

That being said, the offense should have had more than 198 yards through the air against the league’s second-worst passing defense.

Tyler Boyd has had an excellent year so far, but he is almost certainly going to be double covered from here on out until Green returns. He is currently the best receiver on the team, and should have been targeted more than four times nonetheless, but someone else on the team needs to step up and help him out.

John Ross is an excellent weapon as well, but he and Dalton are hardly ever on the same page. He is playing some really good football at times and has turned into a great red zone weapon, but Dalton just can’t seem to connect with him consistently enough.

Ross was open more often than not and Dalton just simply under threw him for most of his targets, including a blatant miss-fire on a fourth-down. The one time Ross went deep and was hit in stride, Driskel threw a great ball that Ross made a great play on. But that just shows that maybe Ross’ issues are stem from a lack of chemistry with Dalton. If the Bengals want to have any offense down the stretch, that is something Ross and Dalton should fix ASAP.

Other than Boyd or Ross, who is there next receiver? Cody Core? As bad as Core has been, Josh Malone or Alex Erickson still can’t find their way onto the field. Auden Tate is barely on the roster and couldn’t get on the field until the last drive for the offense. Someone in the group needs to step up.

Teryl Austin had to go

The Bengals’ defense has been statistically dreadful of late, but they reached a new historical low against the Saints — becoming the first team in NFL history to give up 500 yards in three straight games. Even though Austin tried to dismiss the Bengals defensive woes by pointing towards their winning record, losing three out of their last four games did not help his case.

You can look at the numbers any way you want, but this defense is bad. The Bengals did not record a single sack against the Saints and only registered one quarterback hit, even though the defensive line should be one of the best in the NFL. The Saints scored on every single possession, notching six touchdowns and three field goals. Running back Mark Ingram tallied over 160 total yards on the day despite playing second fiddle in the backfield. This defense is just plain awful.

What else is there to do with one of the worst defenses in NFL history? Sadly, the man in charge had to lose his job. The internal purge shouldn’t stop there, but that is a move that a team makes when they really want to win games. At least the Bengals still think they can win.

When Hue Jackson went 1-31 in Cleveland, the Browns held onto him because they were building. When the Browns actually felt they could win games, they let Jackson go because they didn’t want to wait for the team to come around. It’s the same thing now with the Bengals. If they wanted to wait until next season to start winning, they would just wait it out and wait for the players to catch onto the new system. But the Bengals want to make the playoffs this year, so they let Austin go and gave the reigns of the defense over to Marvin Lewis.

Whether or not that works is yet to be seen. But the defense should not be as bad as it is. There is much room for improvement, and the Bengals will try to milk as much improvement as they can.

The Bengals are badly in need of a rebound of their dismal showing vs. the Saints.

After starting the season 4-1, the Bengals have lost three of four games and are in serious danger of missing the playoffs.

It’s one thing to lose, but two of those losses included a 45-10 drubbing at Kansas City and this past week’s 51-14 home debacle vs. New Orleans. That has the Bengals slipping into the NFL’s bottom half in the latest round of power rankings.

With seven games remaining, there’s still time to get this season turned around and back into the postseason, but losing by 30+ points in two of your last three games is very concerning, even if it’s against arguably the league’s two best teams.

Here are this week’s power rankings:

That’s the number that got defensive coordinator Teryl Austin fired Monday morning, and it’s one of many bad numbers for the Bengals’ defense, which has allowed at least 500 yards of offense in the past three games.

The Bengals were out snapped by over 30 plays, so it was no wonder the score was as lopsided as it was.

The Bengals got whooped on Sunday, there is no way around that. Injuries no doubt played a slight part, but Cincinnati is dealing with enough issues that a 51-14 loss to the Saints isn’t anything to be brushed off. Some of the more telling answers to the game lie in the game’s snap counts.

Here are the snap count takeaways:

75 snaps to 43. That was how many snaps the Saints had compared to the Bengals. The fact that Cincinnati had the ball for that many plays was a bit surprising when it seemed as if New Orleans had the ball for almost the entire game. The Saints did in fact have the ball for just over 39 minutes, so that actually is kind of true. It is hard to say every week that the Bengals have to get better on third down. Still, this week Cincinnati’s defense never forced the Saints to punt, and the offense was 0-6 on third downs. Not quite the winning recipe you expect.

With A.J. Green injured, we saw a taste of how the snaps could shake out at receiver. Tyler Boyd (41) and John Ross (36) led the way, but for some reason the third receiver was essentially Cody Core (20) who had two catches for 17 yards on the day. To be fair to all the receivers, Andy Dalton didn’t have his best outing. He under threw a couple deep balls to Ross when he had a step on his defender. However, it is still baffling that this team is trotting Core out for meaningful offensive snaps when he has shown he won’t do almost anything with them. Especially when this was rookie wide receiver Auden Tate’s first active game of the year, but he didn’t even see a snap or target until Jeff Driskel had taken over for Dalton.

Speaking of Driskel, the Bengals used him as an option quarterback on their touchdown drive, and it really took the defense off guard. Then we never saw that concept again until Driskel ran it when they had the white flag unit in, and he scored their second and final touchdown of the game.

The Saints have one of the best offensive lines in the NFL, so we can’t be too harsh on the defensive line. At some point you’d expect the defensive coordinator to bring a fifth guy on the pass rush more often, but it has become clear that isn’t this teams style. Jordan Willis actually led the way with 60 snaps. He had almost nothing to show for it though. For some reason Josh Tupou (42) played more snaps than Adolphus Washington (21) and Sam Hubbard (47), but it is easy to infer that was probably due to the score being so out of hand early. It will be interesting to see how this changes with Washington reportedly out multiple weeks.

Jordan Evans appeared to be the guy at linebacker for the Bengals on Sunday. He played 71 snaps, but he is the player we expect him to be at this point. He is a huge liability in pass coverage, but a pretty good run defender nonetheless. Obviously, injuries have forced him into a bigger role than he should have, but he got the most snaps of any linebacker, so we have to talk about it because he gave up quite a few big pass plays. It was pretty obvious the Saints didn’t target him by accident either.

It looked like the Bengals planned on having Clayton Fejedelem play a role as the third safety to help out against the pass. He played 17 snaps before getting hurt and leaving the game. That caused the team to use more of Darius Phillips (42) who also helped fill in for an injured Dre Kirkpatrick. We saw an extended amount of KeiVarae Russell (26) after that as well. Some may try to point to those injuries as a reason the Bengals got rolled over, but they were already down by at least three touchdowns before anyone went down.

The biggest question mark Sunday was the lack of Joe Mixon. He only had 13 touches on the day, and he finished with 85 yards. It doesn’t make sense to abandon the run as early as the Bengals did, and it really doesn’t make sense to take your best offensive player out of the game. He only played 29 snaps. That is unacceptable when the team is without Green already.

The Bengals came into the week with a number of starters already not practicing at all last week, and more names were added to the list after the blowout loss to the Saints.

It is no secret the Bengals came into Sunday’s game vs. the Saints already banged up. The biggest news of the day for Cincinnati came before they took the field when it was reported that A.J. Green will be “likely” be out till at least December. Although, news didn’t get much better during the game.

This one flew under the radar in Sunday’s loss, but apparently, Adolphus Washington suffered a knee injury that could sideline him several weeks, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Washington has been getting a healthy dose of snaps when active this season after being signed from the Cowboys’ practice squad in late September. He has logged 102 snaps this season in four games of work. Ryan Glasgow is already out for the year with his own knee injury, so expect to see a lot more Josh Tupou going forward, and don’t be surprised if another defensive lineman is signed soon.

Fejedelem exited near the end of the second quarter of the Saints blow out. He received an inadvertent kick to the side from one of his fellow defenders as he pursued the runner out of bounds. He had been heavily involved in the first half, as the Bengals with more three-safety looks, but after he failed to return it seemed like the Bengals were more content to go back to mixing up between their nickel and base 4-3 defense.

There hasn't been any more news about Fejedelem since he left the game, which is a bit weird. We may have to wait until the first injury report to see if the team's special team's ace will miss anytime.

Dre Kirkpatrick, cornerback

Kirkpatrick left the game with a concussion and was replaced by Keivarae Russell on the outside. It honestly didn’t have too much of an impact on the game, because at that point the Saints were content with just running the ball. In fact, Kirkpatrick suffered his injury after several defenders missed their tackles on the running back. This becomes a bigger issue if Kirkpatrick can’t suit up next week as the Bengals are already down a number of defensive starters.

We will likely be tracking Kirkpatrick's progress through the concussion protocol. Depending on how quickly he gets through it will be the difference between him returning and us seeing either Russell or Darius Phillips starting in his place on the outside.

The two new names to this list are Josh Malone and Alex Redmond. Malone only made a thin receiving group without Green that much thinner. We actually saw Auden Tate’s first active game because of this. It was still Cody Core and Alex Erickson who took a vast majority of the third receiver snaps on Sunday though. Core ended up with two catches for 17 yards.

Redmond’s injury came at as perfect of a time that an injury can happen. Rookie center Billy Price just returned from his foot injury that had kept him sidelined since Week 2, so the Bengals moved Trey Hopkins, who had been filling in at center, over to fill in at right guard. Price and Hopkins had a few plays where they struggled, but to be fair no one on the offense was putting their best foot forward.
