The Bengals’ fourth-round pick from 2017 has a new home.

The Jets announced yesterday that they signed former Bengals wide receiver Josh Malone to fill out their practice squad.

Just a month ago, Malone was a first-string receiver for the majority of Bengals training camp after A.J. Green injured his ankle during the first practice. Not only that, he was also getting major looks as a kickoff returner.

A quiet preseason coupled with the emergence of undrafted free agent Damion Willis saw Malone fall towards the lower end of the depth chart. By late August, he became a dark horse candidate to be cut.

As it turns out, Malone made the Bengals’ initial 53-man roster, beating out fellow veteran Cody Core for the seventh and final spot at receiver. Malone’s job was not safe for long though, as the team quickly acquired Pharoh Cooper off of waivers. Malone was subsequently released to make room for Cooper.

Malone was let go along with linebacker Hardy Nickerson, but the Bengals only had one practice squad spot remaining after signing offensive lineman Wyatt Miller. Nickerson was signed back on, leaving Malone for the other 31 teams. Fortunately for him, the Jets came calling.

A fourth-round draft pick back in 2017, Malone was characterized as a speedy receiver with great size, but never quite grasped the subtle nuances of route running and creating separation. He accumulated just 75 yards, seven catches and one touchdown in 20 games played.

There’s really just a few notable players listed here. For starters, Josh Wells is a sixth-year offensive tackle who was recently released by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He’s been a career backup with starting experience, very much like how the Bengals relied on Anthony Collins for a while. We listed Wells as a potential waiver claim a few days ago.

Wells has been in the league for years, but linebacker Sutton Smith is just a rookie. Smith was drafted by the Steelers in the sixth round of this year’s NFL Draft, and he only played the final two games of the preseason. In the Steelers’ defensive scheme, Smith was used as an edge defender, but he’d be a linebacker with the Bengals at his size (6-0, 232 pounds).

At linebacker, Smith was joined by seventh-year journeyman LaRoy Reynolds and two undrafted free agent rookies in Malik Carney and Connor Strachan. Reynolds comes must recently from the 49ers, while Carney and Strachan were waived by the Lions and Jaguars, respectively.

Ryan Groy and Bryan Witzmann were both undrafted free agents who came into the league in 2014. Groy had been a backup and spot starter for the Bills for four years before joining the Saints this offseason. Whitzmann started for the Chiefs in 2017 and the Browns in 2018.

Plus an updated look at the practice squad now that it’s full.

Today, the Bengals signed linebacker Hardy Nickerson to the practice squad.

Nickerson, a third-year player, was a Bengals college free agent signee in 2017 and played in 30 games with nine starts for the team from ’17-18. He was waived on Sunday to make room for running back Samaje Perine.

With the addition of Nickerson, the Bengals have now filled every spot on the practice squad following Sunday’s addition of former Jets lineman Wyatt Miller. The team had kept two spots open after forming their initial 53-man roster.

All of the players signed to the Bengals’ practice squad today were with the team in preseason.

An NFL practice squad may include up to 10 players, though the Bengals may have up to 11 with TE Mortiz Böhringer, who is an International Player Pathway program participant and is eligible to be added as an 11th practice squad player. Thus, the Bengals currently have two open practice squad spots.

The Bengals’ rookie head coach chooses who he thinks are the best guys, even if his decisions come across as unconventional.

Cincinnati’s rookie head coach is certainly not shy. Zac Taylor’s decision making has left Bengals fans interested, excited, and maybe a little confused. But that is the nature of a fanbase that endured 16 years of the conservative and predictable Marvin Lewis.

So what are some of the biggest roster surprises? For one, the Bengals kept three quarterbacks, despite their starter, Andy Dalton, being rather durable, save for his right thumb. And the two guys they have backing him up are no hot shot up-and-comers or grizzled veterans there to improve the culture. Nope. They’re rolling with both fourth-round pick Ryan Finley and undrafted free agent Jake Dolegala.

While Finley and Dolegala probably won’t see the field, another pleasant surprise will actually start Week 1: Damion Willis. Taylor showed that performance (regardless of one’s draft position or years on the team) is rewarded by giving the undrafted wide receiver an opportunity. And receiver Auden Tate, who nearly went undrafted last year, also made the team.

Meanwhile, on the defensive side, Cincinnati decided to keep 11(!) defensive linemen, three of whom (Andrew Billings, Josh Tupou, and Renell Wren) are 315 pounds or heavier. This might seem strange, as the Bengals no longer have to stuff the likes of Jerome Bettis. However, when you only have four linebackers and maybe only two (Nick Vigil and Preston Brown) who can be expected to perform consistently, you get creative.

Keep the best guys. That was Taylor’s approach. Well, except for O’Shea Dugas, who seems to have made the roster because the team is so desperate at tackle. (Dugas has since been placed on Injured Reserve)

So will Taylor’s “bowling balls” actually produce results? Or is he just establishing culture for next year when the Bengals find their future quarterback and officially launch a new era? That was all part of our debate, which can be found on YouTube for now!

Cincinnati was in the market for a waived running back, but one they wanted ended up in Washington.

When the waiver wire frenzy hit on Saturday and Sunday, most expected the Cincinnati Bengals to look at bolstering their offensive line and/or linebacker groups.

Instead, the team grabbed running back Samaje Perine and wide receiver/returner Pharoh Cooper off of the waiver wire.

However, it appears that Perine wasn’t the only back the Bengals coveted from waivers. Field Yates of ESPN reported that the team also tried to bring in former Eagles running back, Wendell Smallwood.

The most popular player to hit the waiver system this weekend was former Eagles RB Wendell Smallwood. Four teams - the Redskins, Colts, Jaguars and Bengals - all placed a claim on him, per source.
— Field Yates (@FieldYates) September 2, 2019

As Yates noted, Smallwood was a hot commodity on the market. As it turns out, the Redskins ended up with his services, as the back was swiped up within the NFC East division.

Smallwood (5’10”, 208 pounds) was originally a fifth-round selection by Philadelphia in the 2016 draft out of West Virginia. He had been a rotational running back behind the likes of Jay Ajayi, Corey Clement, Darren Sproles and others.

He is known as a versatile player, who has appeared in 37 games over the past three seasons. Smallwood has 850 rushing yards, 388 receiving yards and seven total touchdowns (five rushing, two receiving) since 2016. He also did a small load of work on special teams as a returner and had a touchdown on a kickoff as a rookie.

Perine, on the other hand, has carried the ball 183 times for 635 yards (3.5 average) and one touchdown. He also has 25 career receptions for 187 yards and another touchdown.

While most felt that adding another running back is a bit of a luxury for the Bengals, it appears that Zac Taylor has big plans for the group. After the new head coach touted the importance of the run game this offseason, Joe Mixon also noted the similarities of what Taylor is envisioning from the group, and what Oklahoma Sooners coach Lincoln Riley drew up for the Sooners backs.

The Bengals also announced the addition of Wyatt Miller to the practice squad.

One day after announcing their 53-man roster and practice squad, the Cincinnati Bengals are already making more moves.

On Monday, the team re-signed offensive guard John Jerry, placed offensive tackle O’Shea Dugas on the injured reserve list, and signed free agent offensive tackle Wyatt Miller to the practice squad.

Jerry, who measures in at 6-5 and 340 pounds, is a ninth-year player who signed with the Bengals as a free agent on June 10. He had been released by the Bengals on Saturday, but because he’s a vested veteran, he didn’t go on waivers.

That’s why the Bengals cut him briefly while having every intention to re-sign him once Dugas was placed on IR today, which gives Cincinnati the option to use the IR-return designation in eight weeks.

Dugas, a rookie who signed with the team this year as a college free agent out of Louisiana Tech University, suffered a knee injury in preseason.

Miller, who weights in at 6-6 and 302 pounds, is a rookie out of the University of Central Florida who signed with the New York Jets as a college free agent on May 10 and was waived by the Jets on Saturday.

The Bengals were active during this waiver wire period, but they haven’t landed a linebacker, and they cut Hardy Nickerson, so they now have just four linebackers on the 53-man roster.

As for Jefferson, he’ll play his former team twice this season. The former Longhorn was a surprise cut by the Bengals who aren’t overly strong at linebacker. That said, Jefferson was the team’s third-round pick in 2018 and didn’t see too much action his rookie season.

Jefferson saw time in 10 games and recorded just five solo tackles, ten combined tackles and not many other stats. Cutting Jefferson is sparking a new wave of keeping players on a short leash.
