The Bengals nearly had the Steelers, here is how the win slipped away

The Bengals had a real opportunity to win the game this weekend, but came up short once again. In every game there are a handful of plays that have a major impact on the outcome.

These seven plays were the difference between winning and losing for the Bengals.

1. A Blown Coverage

The Bengals carried a 7-3 lead into the second half. They were able to force a three-and-out on the Steelers’ first possession, but not the second.

On second-and-17 from their own 21-yard line, Steelers quarterback Devlin Hodges threw a 79-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver James Washington.

If you look at everyone except for safety Jessie Bates III, this appears to be Cover 3, but Bates stays low and covers the crosser rather than the deep post. This is a coverage we have seen out of the Bengals all season and it has caused them problems. In fact, back in Week 1 something similar led to a touchdown by Tyler Lockett.

This is a flawed coverage. Bates and two linebackers are in close proximity to tight end Vance McDonald, Bates really doesn’t need to be there, but this leaves the middle of the field wide open and forces cornerbacks B.W. Webb and William Jackson III to each play half of the field.

Webb has no leverage on the ball and Jackson takes an angle that is too deep, allowing Washington to get to the outside.

It is possible (and not uncommon) to run an inverted form of Cover 2, but here like in the Week 1 play against the Seahawks, the cornerbacks are far too wide for that.

The Bengals have had issues covering the deep middle this season, and this is just one more example. This coverage is unsound and should be scrapped.

Not only did this play give the Steelers the lead, it gave them renewed confidence. The defense needs to prevent big plays like this from happening. This touchdown was the result of a major schematic flaw that has not been addressed despite it being exposed in Week 1.

To the Bengals’ credit, their offense responded after giving up that score. On the first seven plays of the next drive, the Bengals picked up four first downs and drove 62 yards to the Steelers’ 15-yard line.

On first-and-10, Joe Mixon picked up three yards. The Bengals ran the ball again on second down, and that is the play in the clip above. As you can see, right guard John Miller is called for a hold and there is really no arguing the call.

Steelers linebacker Mark Barron (No. 26) was walked up into the A-gap just inside of Miller, who puts his hand on Barron’s back and is almost grappling with him by the time Mixon gets to the line of scrimmage.

This holding call puts the Bengals in second-and-17 and despite what you may have heard on Monday Night Football, red zone penalties are not a good thing. The Bengals have struggled in the red zone and in long yardage situations all year. This penalty put them in a bad situation and killed the drive.

Two plays later, they were forced to kick a field goal. This tied the game at 10. The Bengals defense stepped up on the next drive and forced a three-and-out. Unfortunately, the offense wasn’t able to do anything on the plays that followed and the ball went right back to Pittsburgh.

The clip above is third-and-nine. The Steelers were playing Cover 1. This means they were in man coverage with a safety helping out in the deep middle of the field. At the top of the screen, Alex Erickson runs an out and up. Steelers cornerback Joe Haden bites on Erickson’s initial out-cut leaving Erickson open down the sideline.

All that’s needed now is an accurate throw from Ryan Finley, and that isn’t what Erickson’s given. There is pressure in Finley’s face and he does not step into the throw. As a result he lofts the ball out of bounds, where Erickson has no shot of making the catch.

If Finley and Erickson were able to connect, Erickson would have easily gotten inside the 20-yard line and would have had a chance to score. They would have at least had an opportunity to kick a field goal and take back the lead, but instead they came away with nothing.

The Steelers picked up one first down on the ensuing drive, but then the Bengals defense stiffened.

The Bengals’ next possession took the game into the fourth quarter. Unfortunately they were only able to pick up 7 yards before punting.

The Steelers gained two yards on the first two plays of the next drive and faced third-and-eight in the clip above.

They looked to get the ball to Washington for the first down, but the pass fell incomplete. A late flag came in and pass interference was called on Webb.

This is textbook defense by Webb, He looked to secure the tackle with his downfield hand while playing the ball with his upfield hand. Webb was a tad early to secure the tackle, but this was a pretty picky call.

The clip above is the very next play and another pass interference call on Webb.

This time the contact is more obvious, but it appears that both players are making contact with each other. It is probably Webb’s left arm under Deon Cain’s right arm that draws the call.

The Steelers gained six yards on the next three plays combined, five of which were from a neutral zone infraction. All-in-all, the Steelers gained only three yards on the drive, but earned two first downs and got into field goal range due to 39 penalty yards.

Penalties didn’t just hurt the Bengals on this drive, penalties were this drive.

Again, the Bengals offense responded to the score. They drove down the field with a 30-yard reception by Erickson and runs of 11 and nine yards by Mixon.

That led to the clip above. first-and-10 on the Steelers’ 30 yard line. Wide receiver Tyler Boyd dragged across the formation, then turned his route up. He was able to get a few steps on linebacker Devin Bush who was covering him man-to-man.

Unfortunately, the ball was thrown behind him, and he had to turn back, allowing Bush to catch up. Bush knocks the ball out of his hands and it is ruled a fumble. Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick picks up the fumble and returns it for 36 yards.

This was a crushing blow to the Bengals. They had put together a nice drive and this was a big play that got them near the end zone, but a turnover ended the drive. If the ball was thrown in front of Boyd, he may have been able to score and the turnover certainly would not have occurred.

The Steelers did not score on this drive, but they did flip the field. When they got the ball again after a Bengals punt, they were able to extend their lead to 16-10 with a field goal

The Bengals got the ball back with three minutes and 10 seconds left to play and one last chance to get in the end zone. After an eight-yard completion to Giovani Bernard the Bengals had second-and-two on their own 29-yard line.

Finley looks right at Tyler Eifert’s out route, but for some reason doesn’t pull the trigger.

The Bengals got a nice bump this week at left tackle with the return of Cordy Glenn. but here he doesn’t set deep enough and Bud Dupree is able to beat him. Finley fumbles on the play and Dupree’s recovery essentially ends the game.

Glenn and Finley share the blame on this play. The Bengals needed this drive to win the game and they came up short without even getting very far down the road.

Though some of the numbers are ugly, Cincinnati’s defense has scraped together performances to keep contests close.

When you’re an 0-11 team, it’s safe to assume that very few facets of your team are working well.

Because rookie head coach Zac Taylor comes from an offensive background, that side of the ball is bearing the brunt of the blame for the worst start in team history. Rightfully so, as the team has been woeful at scoring points and in executing anything resembling efficiency.

In 2018, the Bengals’ defense under Teryl Austin reached dubious, record-setting levels. In his nine games as Cincinnati’s defensive coordinator last year, Austin’s group allowed an average of 32 points per game (as opposed to 23.8 when Marvin Lewis took over the final seven games), along with the allowance of 454.6 yards per game (361 average per game under Lewis).

In stepped Lou Anarumo with Taylor this year, completing a coaching staff with very little NFL experience in the roles for which they were placed. And, even though he was green for the gig, the prevailing thought was that things couldn’t get much worse.

Unfortunately, at some points this year, that sentiment didn’t ring true. The wide score differentials seen in the contests versus the 49ers and Ravens were prime examples.

Familiar issues in failing to cover able backs and tight ends in the passing game are commonplace, while an inconsistent pass rush and run defense haven’t brought much of an improvement from 2018. Even so, the defense has actually given the team a chance to pull out a number of wins this year.

A look at the numbers

Overall ranking: 417.3 total yards per game average, 32nd in NFL

Points allowed per game: 26.5, 27th in NFL

As you can see, all in all, it’s not very pretty. A handful of these facets are improved from the Austin era, but for the most part, it’s not much of an uptick across the board.

A couple of these areas point to how the team has kept things in reach, though. The red zone scoring percentage is the one that immediately jumps out as the big positive, while the passing defense and third down conversion allowance aren’t great, but also aren’t totally putrid.

Additionally, some numbers on offense have to be considered here. Whether it was Andy Dalton or Ryan Finley under center, the other side of the ball hasn’t necessarily lived up to its side of the bargain.

Check out some of these figures by Cincinnati’s offense, courtesy of Football Outsiders:

Touchdown per drive percentage: .125, 31st in NFL

Punts per drive percentage: .450, 25th in NFL

Three-and-outs per drive: .250, 6th-highest in NFL

Furthermore, the Bengals haven’t scored more than 23 points all season, have scored just 17 points in four games and totaled 33 points in Finley’s three starts.

Manageable point allowances

As mentioned above, Weeks 2 and Week 10 showcased a defense that allowed a combined 100 points to two of the best teams in the league. Three other games against the Steelers, Cardinals and Jaguars basically averaged 27 points allowed in each, pointing to an easy five losses to lay at the defense’s feet.

Still, the team has allowed 16 and 17 points the past two weeks (Raiders and Steelers), respectively, and just 21 points two other times. In those contests against the Bills and Seahawks, those allowances were on the opposition’s home turf. Moreover, the team has had six of its 11 losses decided by one possession this year.

Now, the contrarian would readily point out that the defense let up late points to contribute to those end results. One could also point to a Steelers offense that has been shed of almost all of its talent since last offseason and the inconsistent nature of Oakland’s offense.

They’d be correct, as a chicken-or-the-egg argument would ensue. For instance, two of the touchdowns scored by the Ravens in Week 10 were off of Finley turnovers. But, in that contest, the rookie quarterback was staring at 14-0 hole by the time the first quarter was almost over and a 21-3 deficit before the first Baltimore return for a score.

As it has gone throughout much of the year, the Bengals’ offense and defense have been totally out of sync. By that, we mean that when the offense finally scores points, the defense usually breaks and vice-versa.

Punt coverage assisting things

The special teams unit of the Cincinnati Bengals has been the strongest phase of the team. We’re primarily talking about Kevin Huber and the punt coverage team, which has pinned teams deep with frequency. This has greatly aided the defense limiting points in certain situations.

Huber is right around the top-10 in net average, punts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line and total yardage, give or take. About 41 percent of all of Huber’s 52 punts have been inside the opposition’s 20-yard line, while he also leads the league with 24 fair catches.

The defense is holding strong, but the field position swings by Darrin Simmons’ unit definitely gets a nod as an unsung hero.

All in all, this isn’t meant to be a glowing endorsement for Anarumo and the defense’s overall performance this year. In his first full season as an NFL defensive coordinator, we’ve seen Anarumo make mind-boggling personnel decisions, while some of the big-name veterans are lacking in the major statistical areas.

In fact, when the offseason evaluations commence, taking a hard look at the future of who mans the defensive coordinator in 2020 and beyond should be on the table. However, despite some of the poor numbers, this defense has had the team in a lot of games this year.

How do the Bengals work around the QB issues? What changed on defense?

The Bengals played in yet another game in which they had several opportunities to take the lead in the fourth quarter. Just like they did all season, they blew it and lost 16-10, which is their sixth loss by one score this season.

Is it a good thing that the Bengals kept the Steelers to only 16 points?

Yes, but considering their personnel on offense, it’s not that impressive. The Steelers are signing people off the streets and they’re using a fraction of their playbook. They could possibly get shut out by the Browns next week.

So with the Bengals with a two-game advantage in the draft order and a humiliating loss to the Steelers, what did we learn?

Cordy Glenn was sorely missed

After it looked like Cordy Glenn might never play for the Bengals again, he made his season debut in Week 12 and was the best offensive lineman on the team.

He matched up against Bud Dupree for most of the game, and won a majority of the battles. Dupree only had two tackles on the game, though one of them was a costly strip-sack. This was late in the fourth quarter, so maybe it had to do more with conditioning than anything else.

Of course, Glenn didn’t fix all the problems on the offensive line. Bobby Hart was a hot mess on the other side of the line, and T.J. Watt had a great game against him.

It’s pretty much just one less frustration. Will this help Finley’s development? Probably not. Will it help Mixon run the ball better? Maybe a little, but not much.

At most, Glenn will help fix this terrible offensive line next year. If the Bengals stick with their original plan of moving Glenn to left guard and playing Jonah Williams at left tackle, then that gives them more flexibility on other spots on the line.

Or perhaps he will want a trade in the offseason. In that case, the Bengals might be able to get an extra Day 3 pick for him.

Either way, he was good on Sunday, and hopefully he will be able to keep it up.

Dennard and Lawson are difference makers

The Bengals’ defense does seem to have turned a corner in recent weeks. The defense has turned around mostly because of two key players returning to full health: Darqueze Dennard and Carl Lawson.

Dennard is a huge reason why the Bengals’ run game has beefed up. Up to Week 7, Dennard’s first game back from injury, the Bengals have averaged 189 rushing yards a game given up. Since Week 8, that figure has dropped to 127. It’s also worth noting that the Bengals gave five games of 175+ in the first seven weeks, and none in the last five.

But Dennard’s run stopping ability isn’t the only reason he has been so valuable in this defense. He is also the best slot corner they have. He had one key pass defended in the end zone to keep the Steelers first scoring drive to three points instead of six.

Carl Lawson has been in and out of rehab this season, but this is the longest stretch of the season he has been fully healthy. His uncanny ability to pressure the quarterback has been sorely missed.

Receivers have to win their battles

When it comes to quarterback, it’s been obvious this season that Ryan Finley and Andy Dalton are not going to win the Bengals any games by themselves. They needs help.

The Bengals had two scoring drives, and neither one of them were manufactured by Finley. On the first one, Finley threw up two 50-50 balls to Tyler Boyd, who made some amazing catches to put points on the board.

On the second one, Joe Mixon doubled his production on the day to get the Bengals in field goal range.

The Bengals are now going back to Dalton, as they have three games worth of tape on Finley, so they have a good idea of how he plays, and it’s bad. They should notice by now that his accuracy is not quite was they thought it was, and his pocket awareness makes him unplayable.

Going forward, the Bengals should try to do what they did on the one touchdown drive of the game: make the receivers make plays. There is a problem with that though. Outside of Boyd, the Bengals’ active wide receivers are a former seventh round pick and three former undrafted free agents.

The Bengals also have a Pro Bowl receiving tight end in Tyler Eifert, and another pretty good one in C.J. Uzomah. Maybe this means they involve the tight ends more.

Ryan Finley has had a very rough start to his NFL career, and it has gotten to the point the Bengals may have to consider evaluating the next quarterback on their roster.

As Bengals’ fans, we haven’t been having the greatest time this season.

Our team is 0-11, and the only bright spot is that we have almost completely secured the first overall pick with every other team in the NFL having at least two wins. As far as what we can take away from what is happening on the field, the snaps tell only part of the story to what may be a bigger problem.

Here are the snap count takeaways from the Bengals’ loss to the Steelers:

Despite both teams struggling offensively for mot of the game, there was still a huge discrepancy in total snaps. The Bengals only ran 58 plays to the Steelers 74. How does that happen? Well the Bengals were 1/12 on third down conversions, which resulted in a ridiculous amount of three-and-outs by the offense. The Steelers also managed to put a few first downs together despite their offensive struggles.

We have to start with one takeaway that needs to be taken seriously. Rookie quarterback Ryan Finley (58) can’t play the entire game again if he is going to look like that. Outside of throwing up two prayers that Tyler Boyd answered for him, he again looked inaccurate as well as late on plenty of throws. I get you want to evaluate the young guy, but at the cost of being able to evaluate the rest of your offense? Twice now Finley has faced two drives where he could lead his team down the field to tie or take the lead, and in both games he looked lost. We are at the point where we have to wonder if Finley can even make the team next year as a backup. It may be time to give Jake Dolegala a shot to show what he can do. Maybe he is the backup of the future.

The theme of these final games is evaluation, and this week the Bengals were planning on making a move in the name of that. Billy Price (58) was going to be sat in order to start Alex Redmond at left guard. However, Redmond hurt himself during the pregame workout, so Price played the entire game. The one issue I have with this is the offensive line is obviously a unit that will see some major turnover (hopefully). Why do we need to see Redmond again? We haven’t seen Michael Jordan since early in the season and Fred Johnson hasn’t got to play at all. I’d rather see no stone left unturned than lifting the same stones over and over just to find that the turds still haven’t turned into diamonds.

Germaine Pratt (46) seems to be getting eased into playing more. He was still replaced at times by the three-headed monster of Hardy Nickerson (9), Jordan Evans (4) and LaRoy Reynolds (4). Hopefully we get to the point where the rookie can receive the kind of snaps that Nick Vigil (70) is getting.

You know what helps a struggling offense? Only playing Tyler Eifert 22 snaps. This seems like a huge problem of trying to make the players fit a coaches scheme rather than scheming around the players you have. You may not be able to throw the ball to Eifert 30 times a game, but even just having him out there takes attention away from these other receivers who are struggling to gain separation. C.J. Uzomah played 36 and Cethan Carter exited the game early with a concussion. If Cincinnati was only going to play Eifert like this then they should’ve just traded him at the deadline.

With a healthy Carl Lawson (35) back on the field, we have seen a pretty nice rotation at defensive end. Sam Hubbard (64) still leads the pack with Carlos Dunlap (65) right behind him. You can tell this is helping Dunlap and Hubbard who were playing close to every snap there for a few games without Lawson. Also Lawson has looked like his old healthy self the past two games with a sack in each one.

Still winless, but there is one silver lining.

The Cincinnati Bengals defense played well against the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, at home, the Queen City’s beloved team was still unable to find a victory, now starting 0-11 for the first time in franchise history.

The Bengals lost 16-10 to their northern rivals. But, we can find one positive, and that’s been the defense. Cincinnati held their opponent to under 18 points for the second straight week.

Last week, Oakland scored 17 points. Although they were able to let Josh Jacobs loose for over 100 yards, they managed to limit Derek Carr. He threw for 292 yards and had just one touchdown, also throwing an interception.

Outside of a 14-point second quarter, Oakland scored just three points. It was the second half against Pittsburgh that let fans down. Going into halftime up for the third time this year, Cincinnati allowed 13 second-half points while scoring a mere three.

Redo those quarters, and both games may’ve ended with victories for the winless Bengals.

Giving up 33 in two games is impressive in the NFL, and the Bengals have been able to do it with quality play in the secondary and up front. The team’s linebacking corp could still use some help, allowing over 120 yards on the ground in both outings.

That’ll certainly be a unit they look to improve this offseason, but as for their current roster outlook, the defense has been led by Sam Hubbard, Carlos Dunlap, and Darqueze Dennard, all of which had above-average performances in Week 12 including sacks from both Hubbard and Dunlap.

Ironically, this second straight week of quality defense has coincided with the release of linebacker Preston Brown, a player the Bengals re-signed to a three-year deal this past offseason.

That said, this is also the first time this season the Bengals have forced an interception in three straight games. Overall, their improved defensive play has been the crux of being able make the past two weeks a four-quarter game.

Moving forward, we’ll expect more from this team, especially in the middle of the field.

The rookie head coach was non-committal in postgame interviews about the state of the quarterback position for the Bengals going forward.

The midseason quarterback switch made by Bengals head coach Zac Taylor hasn’t provided the spark he had hoped. Ryan Finley is 0-3 as an NFL starter and hasn’t cracked the 200-yard mark in any contest.

Because of numbers like those, Taylor was asked about a possible move back to Andy Dalton after the team fell to 0-11 at the hands of the Steelers this Sunday.

Taylor said if rookies had just three games to be evaluated there wouldn’t be a lot of players left in the league.
— Laurel Pfahler (@LaurelPfahler) November 24, 2019

When Dalton was the team’s signal-caller this year, the club was 0-8, but he was top-five in NFL passing yards at the time of his benching. Cincinnati was the worst in the league at running the football in those eight games, but in the three “Finley era” games, Joe Mixon has run for 279 yards (an average of 93 yards per game) and a 4.4 yards per carry average.

Regardless, Taylor’s words in the second part of the interview may be a bit more telling, as they may point to continuing to give Finley more chances. Still, this isn’t exactly a “Ryan Finley is our starting quarterback” definitive type of statement.

The Bengals’ offense mustered just a 16 percent success rate on third down against Pittsburgh and have scored a total of 33 points in the three games he has started. Furthermore, Finley has thrown two touchdowns, against two interceptions, with two lost fumbles and has just a 47.1 completion percentage.

If the goal is to win games, it would appear that going back to Dalton provides the best route. However, if the team truly is in evaluation mode and is more eyeing the draft and 2020 roster outlook, staying put with Finley is what needs to be done.

It’s a tough decision to make for Taylor, but it’s one that will send a message to the team. What message that is, exactly, isn’t clear.

The Bengals really did everything they could to throw this game away, but how did fans react?

The Bengals found a way to lose against the Steelers this week. They were in great position several times to get head coach Zac Taylor his first win, but they kept finding ways to lose. Here are the reactions from twitter throughout the game.

Starting with the bad

The 2019 Bengals have secured the worst start in franchise history. When you consider Cincinnati’s history, that is quite the accomplishment. We’ll let the reactions speak for themselves in this section

Both the Steelers and Bengals offenses were particularly bad to start the game. Some may credit the defenses, but we just saw some really unwatchable football. Quarterbacks looked inaccurate and offensive lines rarely created space for the running backs. It had many questioning if either team would ever score.

It was a hard-fought AFC North contest by two battered teams, but familiar mistakes down the stretch continued the Bengals’ 2019 futility.

Cincinnati showed up for its divisional clash against the Steelers, but a familiar storyline ensued. While the Bengals kept it close, penalties and other unforced errors led to an ultimate defeat.

We are witnessing what’s on pace to be the worst season in Bengals’ history, as the team fell to 0-11 on Sunday. Still, the effort was there this week, even though a “goose egg” resides in the win column.

Here are the best and worst individual performers by the Cincinnati Bengals in their 16-10 loss to the Steelers.

Winners

Second quarter Tyler Boyd: The veteran receiver spoke up about his lack of recent involvement in the offense and boy, did he back it up. Right around the two-minute warning of the first half, Ryan Finley floated a 50-50 ball to Boyd down the field 47-yard, one-handed catch.

One play later and targeting Boyd once again, Finley tossed up a wounded duck to the end zone and Boyd snagged it away from Joe Haden for his second touchdown catch of the season. Boyd did finish with 101 yards receiving and forced a big pass interference penalty to set up a field goal in the third quarter, as well.

Darqueze Dennard: With Dre Kirkpatrick out, Dennard has had to play a more significant role on defense. His duties haven’t changed much, as he is still primarily working out of the slot, but he was everywhere against Pittsburgh.

In the first half alone, Dennard had a pass defended in the end zone and a big hit on Mason Rudolph. He finished with five tackles to go with those two other nice plays.

Lou Anarumo: The rookie defensive coordinator wisely went after the many weaknesses of the Steelers’ offense. Maurkice Pouncey was out of the lineup and the interior of the defensive line took advantage, while the secondary limited any sort of big plays in the passing game—save for one, really.

Sacks, a red zone interception and crisp tackling were on display this week. This may have been one of the better overall performances by the Bengals in recent memory against the Steelers—particularly with the ineptitude of the team’s offense.

Yes, Pittsburgh was missing many weapons on offense and Anarumo made an egregious personnel error on the James Washington touchdown, but it was nice to witness the defense not getting pushed around, as has often been the case in this rivalry.

The safety tandem of Shawn Williams and Jessie Bates III: It’s been a tough year for both of these guys, but they came up with some solid plays on Sunday versus Pittsburgh. They were put in a bad position on the long bomb to James Washington, but Williams had an interception, while Bates had four solo tackles.

The defensive tackle duo of Josh Tupou and Andrew Billings: It’s been a year of progression from these two. Yes, their skill sets make their roles limited in the NFL, but their big bodies and ability to get into the backfield are effective tools in the rugged AFC North.

They combined for five tackles and a sack (by Billings), while also limiting the effectiveness of the vaunted Steelers’ rushing attack for three-plus quarters.

Carlos Dunlap: It was a monster game from the big guy. He’s been quiet this year, but he had a sack and a tipped pass that forced a Mason Rudolph interception. Dunlap was a constant presence, adding six total tackles to those two other big plays.

Losers

The former Buckeye offensive linemen: Coming into Sunday, former first-round pick, Billy Price, was benched, as was his rookie line-mate, Michael Jordan. Price was pressed into action with a pre-game injury to Alex Redmond, but wasn’t anything special, while Jordan was flagged for a hold on the only snap he played, as an extra lineman.

Bobby Hart: The offensive line had many struggles on Sunday, but most of them came from the right side. T.J. Watt had a sack and another tackle-for-loss while going up on Hart.

The only saving grace for No. 68 was when Watt briefly left with an injury to limit the embarrassment, although he had another patented false start in the fourth quarter.

Ryan Finley: Essentially, when Finley wasn’t throwing up prayers to Boyd, the passing offense absolutely sputtered. The offense failed on 10 of its first 12 third-down conversions, while the rookie also failed to crack the 200-yard passing mark for the third consecutive week. Finley also fumbled twice, losing one of them.

B.W. Webb: The free agent acquisition from this offseason is struggling. He has been forced to play in Kirkpatrick’s outside corner role and has been an Achilles’ Heel for Anarumo’s defense.

In the first half, Webb let up a 35-yard completion that led to a field goal, while also being responsible for Washington’s gigantic touchdown reception. In the fourth quarter, he let up 34 yards on two pass interference penalties (they were borderline), giving the Steelers life late in the game.

Zac Taylor: The effort level and other aspects of the team were impressive this week. However, the play-calling once again left a lot to be desired, as the team limped to a 16 percent third-down conversion rate, with just 10 points scored. This was under a quarterback known as “Taylor’s guy”, whom he switched to in the middle of the season.

In a much more depressing twist, Taylor’s Bengals have set a team record for futility in 2019. They are the first Bengals team since its 1968 inception to start a season 0-11, they have not scored more than 23 points all season and are averaging just 13.4 points per game in 2019.

Tyler Boyd in the three other quarters: Aside from the explosive second quarter, Boyd made some terrible mistakes to cripple the team. These came in crunch-time moments, too, as a third-down drop and lost fumble both occurred in the fourth quarter. If you’re going to publicly call to get the football, you can’t commit these kind of mistakes once it’s thrown your way.
