Zac Taylor gets right to the point when talking about his best offensive player finally being fully healthy for what seems like the first time during his time in Cincinnati.

The 2019 season was a rough year for the Bengals. It wasn’t exactly how Zac Taylor wanted to start off his Cincinnati career.

One big reason for the struggles last season was the absence of the team’s star wide receiver A.J. Green, who missed the entire 2019 with an ankle injury as well as recovering from some nagging injuries.

Recently, Green returned to the field again, and with under one week to get ready for Week 1, Taylor couldn’t be happier.

“[Having Green back] is huge. He’s one of the best receivers in the NFL,” Taylor told CBS Sports. “To see him live and in person for really the first time this training camp is significant for our team. It gives us an enormous weapon out there on the outside that people are really going to be concerned about. He and Joe [Burrow] have formed a nice connection and good chemistry, so we are excited to work him back into the fold and have him for Week 1.”

There is no question that a healthy Green makes this offense better. He would be a great safety blanket for rookie quarterback Joe Burrow, pulls coverage to help free up Tyler Boyd and the rest of the wide receivers and safeties can’t come up into the box as often to help contain Joe Mixon.

The problem in the past few seasons has been having a healthy Green. If that changes and we see Green play some substantial time, we could see a pretty fun offense start to form in Cincinnati. The question will then become who stays from the Bengals receiving corps.

Taylor and the rest of Cincinnati would happily take a clean bill of health for Green in 2020. He is still a player capable of making a huge difference for a team. Especially one as young as the Bengals.

Considering how much depth the Bengals lost at that position group this past month, Covington will be expected to fill multiple roles this year.

In 66 career games, Covington has recorded 93 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, and 8.5 sacks. His average season defense grade from Pro Football Focus is a solid 71.1.

As for Calitro, the third-year linebacker was questionable to make it through final cuts on Saturday. Dealing away a player that was probably going to be waived for another that will make the roster is a bonafide success of a transaction.

“Joe’s all about family, and ever since he was drafted, they’ve made him feel like family.”

The Bengals, by some standards in the NFL, made a mistake giving a running back a second contract. Many of the large extensions or deals following a running back’s rookie deal either never get done and result in hold outs or give teams a quick out after a season or two.

This one feels different. This doesn’t feel like a Todd Gurley in LA situation.

While we don’t know the details of Mixon’s deal, we do know the Bengals, a team not known for their spending habits, have made him one of the highest-paid backs in the NFL and the highest-paid back in franchise history.

He will earn about $50 million over the next five years if both sides continue on good terms.

That said, Mixon made one thing clear in the negotiations.

That thing is the running back that’s been snubbed for multiple Pro Bowls wanted to stay in Cincinnati, and he made sure agent Peter Schaffer understood that. Why would a player that may have a market in Miami or Los Angeles want to stay in the Queen City?

It has less to do with the nightlife of the city and more to do about his treatment from the team’s executives. Cincinnati has made Mixon feel like family, and he’s quickly become a fan favorite.

“He loves it there. Joe’s all about family and ever since he was drafted they’ve made him feel like family. That’s matters to him. Joe can’t tell me the name of a club in Cincinnati. Probably the only restaurant he can name in Cincinnati is Pappadeaux’s. He really is a homebody. He just likes to spend time with his family,” Schaffer told Bengals.com’s Geoff Hobson.

Mixon also went on Twitter after the deal was finalized and thanked those that made his dream a reality.

Life is about both the journey and the people along the way. Can’t thank my family, the OU family and my Bengals family more for always being there for me and supporting me. #whodey pic.twitter.com/QuB7rgi4Z7
— ⚡️Primetime!!!⚡️ (@Joe_MainMixon) September 1, 2020

Mixon’s potential is still untapped. If the Bengals can fix their offensive line woes, the Bengals will have one of the league’s best offenses. Better yet, with Mixon’s deal, Joe Burrow will have a high-caliber weapon for his entire rookie deal.

Hopefully.

Not only is there the regular injury designations, but there a couple of new roster designations in 2020.

Each team needs to trim their rosters down from 80 players to 53 by Saturday.

As this progresses, terms like PUP, NFI, and IR are going to be used a lot.

During a normal season, these terms can be confusing enough. The nuances of each designation might change year-to-year anyways if the NFL owners or NFLPA thinks there needs to be some change.

But in 2020, amid the coronavirus pandemic, things are going to be a little different in an effort to keep the disease from spreading.

So what do all of these acronyms mean?

Physically Unable to Perform (PUP)

The physically unable to perform list is for players who are entering training camp with an injury. There are two designations, active and reserve.

For a player to be placed on the active/PUP list, he must be unable to practice before training camp starts. Both Rodney Anderson and Damion Willis started training camp on the active/PUP list, and Jonah Williams was added to the list last season after injuring his shoulder during rookie camp.

Once training camp starts, a player cannot be placed on the active/PUP list after participating in at least one practice.

If a player is placed on the active/PUP list, he can be activated at any time during training camp. Once the regular season starts, they must either be activated or moved to the reserve/PUP list.

Players on the reserve/PUP list must be inactive for the first six weeks. The team then has a five week window in which to allow that player to begin practice. Once he starts practicing, the team has three weeks to either activate him, waive him, or add him to injured reserve.

Players on the reserve/PUP do not count against the 53-man active roster limit.

Since the Bengals waived Anderson and Willis, they won’t have anyone on the reserve/PUP list this season.

Non-football Injury (NFI)

This is similar to the PUP list, except that, as the name implies, the player in question must be sidelined due to something that is non-football related.

This can anything be from a car accident to an illness (except COVID-19, which we will get to later). Alex Redmond was added to the NFI list this offseason for reasons unknown, but it indicated that his bicep injury from last season was clear.

The NFI list could also apply to rookies who were injured in their last college season. Marcus Bailey and Khalid Kareem were both added to the NFI list at the beginning of camp this year.

Like the PUP list, once a player begins practice, they are permanently removed from the list. Also like the PUP list, players can be on the active/NFI list during training camp, but must either be activated or placed on the reserve/NFI list.

All three players on the active/NFI list have been cleared, so there won’t be anyone on the reserve/NFI list either.

Injured Reserve (IR)

If a player gets injured during training camp or during the regular season, they may be placed on injured reserve.

Typically, once a player is placed on IR, they cannot play for that team for the rest of the season. The only way they can play is if they are released and signed by another team.

Renell Wren is currently on IR after the injury he suffered during training camp. He will not be able to return this season.

However, as of this season, a team may place an unlimited number of players on IR with a designation to return. Anyone on this list can return after three weeks.

Players on IR do not count against the 53-man active roster limit, but the challenge is that a they have to be on the 53-man roster in order to be eligible for return.

This is why the Bengals cut Michael Johnson out of training camp in 2018 and immediately re-signed him. They wanted to add Davontae Harris to IR, and therefore had to keep him on the roster. So they released Johnson, added Harris to IR, then re-signed Johnson.

The Bengals will probably have to do similar roster gymnastics around Trae Waynes. Since Waynes was injured during training camp, he will have to be on the active roster before being added to IR.

Reserve/Suspended

This is a designation for players who have been suspended.

Players serving a suspension do not count against the 53-man active roster limit, but when their suspension is over, the team must make corresponding moves to keep the roster to 53.

Redmond started the season on this list last season. He was able to practice during training camp and even play in the preseason, but once the regular season started he was unable to do so until his suspension was served.

Reserve/COVID-19

This is a special list that will hopefully be in effect for this year only.

The reserve/COVID-19 list is for those who have tested positive for coronavirus or who have been in close contact with someone who has.

For instance, John Ross was placed on this list since he was in contact with his son who had tested positive.

There is no timetable for return from this list. A player remains on this list until they are medically cleared to return. ESPN adds that players may be activated from the list when they are healthy.

Anyone on this list does not count against the 53-man roster.

Reserve/Opt-out

Again, the name should tell you exactly what this list is. Players who have opted out were placed on this list.

Isaiah Prince and Josh Tupou opted out, but the deadline to opt out has passed, so no one else can be added to this list.

Dugas was briefly on the Bengals’ 53-man roster last year.

The Cincinnati Bengals have waived offensive tackle O’Shea Dugas, linebacker Brady Sheldon and defensive end Bryce Sterk, the team announced Thursday. The Sheldon news was reported earlier this morning.

Dugas, a second-year player out of Louisiana Tech, originally was a college free agent signee of the Bengals in 2019. He spent all of last season on the Reserve/Injured list (knee).

Sheldon, a first-year player out of Ferris State University, joined Cincinnati last November and appeared in one game (no statistics).

Sterk, a rookie out of Montana State, was acquired by Cincinnati on waivers from Miami on Aug. 14.

Of this group, Sheldon and Dugas have shown enough to think they’re in the running for practice squad spots. But because they were waived before the Bengals’ mock scrimmage tonight, it appears all three of these guys not in the running for spots on in. The practice squad limit has been expanded to 16 players, and up to six players may be included with no maximum of accrued seasons.

The Bengals must cut their roster down to 53 players by Saturday, Sept. 5 at 4 pm EST.

The Orange and Black Insider is launching a pregame show this year and the sponsor of that show and this program is Narragansett Beer. Its owner is here to speak with us about the Bengals and the company, which has new headquarters in the Kentucky and Cincinnati areas.

If you’ve been a viewer or listener to the Orange and Black Insider Bengals podcast for some time, you’d probably realize what a year our show and the entire slate of Cincy Jungle podcasts have had. Big-name guests, including current and former Bengals players, have been a regular part of our slate, as has an increased amount of overall shows.

To the latter point, the trio of Matt Minich, Anthony Cosenza and John Sheeran will be bringing you a pregame show before every regular-season Bengals game this year. It’ll be a relaxed show, with guests, giveaways and analysis to help bring you a virtual tailgate, of sorts.

We are pleased to announce that these pregame shows are being brought to you by Narragansett Beer. And, to help us announce this partnership, we have the company’s owner, Mark Hellendrung joining us to tell us about the company and their selection of beverages to get you set for game day.

We’re taking the air at 3:00 p.m. ET and kicking off with the chat with Mark Hellendrung. Be sure to check out www.narragansettbeer.com for their product line, or get them at many of your local grocers/liquor stores!

“I definitely had them. I feel better after what the doctors gave me.”

It took a while, but the Bengals and Joe Mixon finally agreed to a long-term extension this week that keeps him tied to the franchise through 2024.

Both sides worked tirelessly throughout training camp to get a deal done for the fourth-year back, who’s arguably been the offense’s most valuable player over the last two seasons.

But while getting a deal done can be challenging and even hostile at times, Mixon didn’t let that affect his standing with the team, as he participated in most of training camp, whereas many players in his position have held out before until a deal got done (like Alvin Kamara and the Saints).

Some thought that was the case when Mixon began missing practice last week with what was reported as a migraine issue he was battling. It did seem odd that Mixon began sitting out as the team inched closer to next week’s regular-season opener, whether it was a mini holdout, or Mixon just simply playing it safe since he knew he was on the verge of signing a contract that will have him set for life.

Mixon wants you to know his migraines were very legit and something he’s actually dealt with before he began missing practice.

During his Wednesday meeting with media, Mixon discussed how his migraines plagued him for several weeks, even affecting his sleep, and how he had to visit a doctor because of them.

If true, it’s a tad concerning Mixon dealt with migraines for several weeks. He’s been very durable since joining the Bengals as a second-round pick out of Oklahoma in 2017. He’s missed a combined four games through four seasons, one of which was a two-game absence in 2017 due to a concussion. Concussions have has been linked to migraines and other post-traumatic head issues.

Hopefully, this was nothing more than a one-time issue that won’t plague Mixon moving forward.
