Alex Erickson’s great punt return that nearly saved the Bengals on Sunday.

Wide receiver/punt returner Alex Erickson is currently fifth in the league in yards per punt return (10.56) and had a great outing against the Giants this weekend. He returned two punts for a total of 44 yards; gaining 15 yards on his first return and another 29 on his second.

The second return was key because it came late in the game after an unexpectedly long kick by the Giants. If he had failed to return this punt, the team would have had more ground to cover, but after his return put them at the 50-yard line, they were only a first down away from a potential game winning field goal with one minute to play.

This video focuses on that return and everything Erickson had to do to make it happen.

There is a reason that even if a team has a talented kickoff returner, the same player does not necessarily return punts. Fielding a punt is not the same as fielding a kickoff. In fact, it is much harder.

Punted footballs descend at a much steeper angle when compared to kickoffs and they often knuckle, making them harder to read. To make matters worse, the coverage gets to the punt returner much faster. So not only does he have to read the trajectory of the punt, he also has to be aware of the coverage and decide if he should make a fair catch or attempt a return.

Because the coverage is on him so fast, there is an added element of pressure. If a kickoff returner drops the ball, he picks it up and the return continues. The coverage does not get to him quickly enough to make a difference. If a punt returner drops the ball, it is likely a turnover because the coverage team is right there.

For all of these reasons, who returns punts is much more about trust than anything else. Whoever has shown that they can do these things consistently will get the snaps on Sunday. A more dynamic returner who has regularly muffed punts in practice will not see the field.

Erickson may not be having a great season as the Bengals’ punt returner, but this moment deserved a spotlight.

Darrin Simmons and Shawn Williams did it again this week!

Back in Week 10, when the Bengals were down by a minuscule 29 points to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Bengals special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons dug into his bag of tricks and green-lit a direct snap to Shawn Williams on a fourth-and-13 at their own 34-yard line. Williams went on to scamper for 39 yards and it ended up being the second-longest play of the day for the Bengals.

Two weeks later, Simmons and Williams did it again.

The Bengals faked a punt against the Giants as Williams took another direct snap around the right edge, this time for just seven yards, but still managed to get the all-important first down. This was the exact same fake that the Bengals ran against the Steelers, but this time, they attacked the other side of the field. It also came even later in the game and happened even closer to the Bengals’ own end zone.

In this video we’ll look at the scheme and rationale behind the fake.

What did the Bengals see that caused them to run it?

How did it work twice in three weeks?

What is the lasting impact of successfully faking punts?

Lawson has had a great contract year, but the 21-year old Thomas kept him in check on Sunday.

Fans and players of a struggling team are each faced with similar questions, and they mainly revolve around desire.

For the players, it’s about playing for something; working for something. Every morning they wake up and have to go back to the grind even as the season is bound to end in a whimper. Most of them have never experienced consistent winning at the NFL level. Some of them haven’t consistently won games since high school.

They’re professionals, sure, and this is their job, yes. But most working individuals would agree that jobs can get tedious and monotonous at times.

In the midst of a fifth-straight losing season, the entire Cincinnati Bengals’ roster knows this better than most NFL players, as does their fanbase. What purpose do people have to spend their time, energy, and money over and over again towards an organization that consistently displays an inferior product in an industry that’s valued at over $10 billion?

Personally, I think the answer for both sides is the players.

Fans identify themselves as followers of a team, but what keeps them interested is the players. That’s who they’re watching and invest so much of their interest in. When Tyler Boyd scores a touchdown, they don’t cheer for Mike Brown or his family, they cheer for Boyd and his teammates.

In the weeks leading up to Joe Mixon signing his contract extension, plenty of fans told me that Mixon was the heart of the team and made watching the Bengals enjoyable. Regardless of Mixon’s true value to winning football games, he created an emotional attachment with the fanbase.

Fans care about seeing their favorite players continue to play for the team they’re attached to whether or not those players are worth keeping around. And this is even more pertinent when the team struggles as a whole. They may not be expecting wins, but the if players they like to watch suit up, they’ll tune in.

Going back to the players’ side, when the team is losing and the season is dragging on, the role of leadership suddenly falls on the players. They’re the ones going out there every week on the field taking orders from coaches who haven’t put them in positions to succeed. Their bond can either strengthen or deteriorate during losing stretches, and it may come down to how the best of them perform.

This was all a long way of saying that it’s up to the Bengals’ top players to lead by example in the final weeks of this season, and whether they want it or not, they are why fans continue to watch the team.

The Bengals’ latest game against the New York Giants featured a defensive slugfest that eventually featured backup quarterbacks on both sides of the ball. It was the defense that had my curiosity in this game because having any sort of expectations for an offense led by Brandon Allen was going to lead to disappointment. Despite their best efforts, the defense could not carry Cincinnati to a victory over New York’s NFC team, and one matchup in particular stood out.

Carl Lawson has been the Bengals’ best pass rusher this season, and that statement doesn’t even articulate the situation well. Lawson’ essentially been the Bengals’ only pass rusher this season, but it’s not like he’s been dominant by any means.

Now in his fourth season, Lawson has been up and down in a year where if he’s not great for a week, the entire defense is in trouble. This week presented an intriguing opportunity for Lawson to showcase his upside. The Giants’ pass protection has been largely underwhelming this year, and rookie left tackle Andrew Thomas has been a big part of the problem.

But if you just watched this game, you wouldn’t have known that.

Thomas faced Lawson 36 times in pass protection and didn’t allow a single pressure. The only time Lawson got close to sacking either Daniel Jones or Colt McCoy was when Thomas was blocking someone else when facing a blitz. It was an impressive battle between the two of them, but Thomas undoubtedly won the war.

Here are seven plays from the matchup that I thought were interesting.

Lawson getting shutout by a rookie who has been more of a liability this year wasn’t the reason why the Bengals lost this game, but knowing Lawson was facing a talented left tackle who won’t play the Bengals again until 2024 is indeed a reason as to why I watched this game.

As an impending free agent, Lawson may not even be in Cincinnati next year, but he’s earned a voice in the locker room as an unquestioned on-field alpha in his position group. And we’ll at least be able to watch him while we unfortunately keep watching the rest of the team.

Cincinnati’s rookie linebackers make their own impact as Tee Higgins and the offense begin life without Joe Burrow.

You don’t really recognize and appreciate how valuable a good quarterback is until you see the alternative. Nine-and-a-half games of us watching Joe Burrow grow before our very eyes gave us a fresh perspective of what it looked like when a quarterback elevated an otherwise subpar team. Without him, there’s not much that makes the Cincinnati Bengals a competitive team, not much less a good team, and despite losing by just two points to the New York Giants, the Bengals looked as bad as their now 2-8-1 record advertises them as.

Things aren’t going to get any easier for Cincinnati, but you already knew that. Just like you knew that either Brandon Allen or Ryan Finley were going to be monumental downgrades from Burrow. Burrow’s value, stock, or whatever you want to call it, skyrocketed once he went down nine days ago.

What about the rest of the rookies? Let’s check on them after Week 12.

We covered it last week, but the impact on Burrow’s absence was always going to be most direct with Tee Higgins. Tyler Boyd and A.J. Green are veterans and have played with multiple quarterbacks throughout the years. Their production was going to be hindered regardless because of the drop-off in quarterback play, but at least they had experience to help them work with a backup under center.

Higgins, despite how impressive he’s been this year, is still very young and only began solidifying a truly productive connection with Burrow. With half of that connection sidelined for the time being, ample pressure was on Higgins to continue being the offense’s No. 1 receiver.

Allen was seven-for-seven when throwing to Higgins in this game, but two completions were called back for holding on the play. Higgins’ first two receptions came well short on third-and-long situations, and his third went for just four yards on a first-and-10. It was the reality for the entire receiving corps; there’s just not much to be done with a bad quarterback slinging the ball.

But when the Bengals really needed points, Higgins is where they went.

The offense’s best drive of the day was powered by two things: Higgins, and penalties. Higgins hauled in the Bengals’ biggest offensive play for 18 yards and capped off the drive with his fifth touchdown of the day. The throw from Allen was impressive as he was falling away from pressure, but Higgins fighting through traffic in the end zone to get a clear chance at the catch-point should not go unnoticed.

It wasn’t enough to steal the victory, but gutsy plays in critical situations is what you expect from the alpha receiver.

Admittedly, these articles haven’t given Logan Wilson and Akeem Davis-Gaither enough coverage throughout the season. With Burrow out, more focus will be put on the Bengals’ rookie linebackers.

The narratives remain consistent with these two. Wilson isn’t technically a starter, but he’s on the field for most of the game. Davis-Gaither used to regularly play with Wilson, but his playing time has been limited for three-straight games. He’s played just 21 snaps since Week 10 after playing 22 snaps in Week 8 alone.

On the second drive of the game, Wilson came in for Germaine Pratt as the defense came out in their nickel package. It was on this drive that Wilson busted a trick play from the Giants’ offense and forced a throwaway.

Wilson rotated in and out with Pratt throughout the afternoon, and, per usual, Wilson was also the third linebacker when they deployed a traditional 4-3 package. The Bengals utilized this personnel grouping a decent amount on Sunday, and considering Colt McCoy was the opposing quarterback for half the game, they could afford to do so.

Wilson’s lone solo tackle on the day came when he was one of the three linebackers on the field.

When the Giants went into their two-minute offense at the end of the first half, Wilson was the lone linebacker in their big nickel package with safety Brandon Wilson as the dime-back. Davis-Gaither has typically been on the field with Wilson in this package, but Brandon Wilson has been eating into Davis-Gaither’s opportunities.

During the final drive of the first half, Wilson was nearly exposed on a third-and-five, but Daniel Jones missed the easy throw and the Giants were forced to take a longer field goal because of it.

In the second half, Brandon Wilson was beat deep by Evan Engram on a third-and-long, and the next time the Giants were in that position, Davis-Gaither came on for Brandon Wilson and nearly hauled in his first interception of his career.

Perhaps the biggest impact Wilson and Davis-Gaither made came on the same play. During Brandon Wilson’s 103-yard kickoff return touchdown, Wilson and Davis-Gaither each made the final blocks to clear the older Wilson free for the rest of the way.

The defense had a couple of ugly moments, but they kept the Giants’ depleted offense at bay and out of the end zone for almost the entire game. Wilson should keep seeing a healthy amount of snaps regardless of how well Josh Bynes and Pratt play, and each of them did play well. Davis-Gaither might just be the fifth linebacker on the depth chart, as even Jordan Evans still gets in the game from time to time.

Khalid Kareem is in a similar holding pattern. He’s exclusively being used as the left edge defender, so he’s basically Sam Hubbard’s backup. Kareem got 13 snaps in this game and recorded a stop in run defense.

Hakeem Adeniji’s time as a starter officially came to end last week when he was benched for Bobby Hart. There was a chance to see Adeniji at right guard when Alex Redmond went out with a concussion, but Quinton Spain was moved there from left guard and Michael Jordan came off of the bench instead.

Adeniji was active and since Fred Johnson was a healthy scratch for the second-straight week, Adeniji appears to be official swing tackle now. This probably confirms that we’ll only see Adeniji at tackle this season unless more injuries impact the position group.

There’s plenty to learn from offense, defense, and even special teams.

The Bengals lost to the Giants by only two points, which is actually a miracle. To their credit, the Bengals kept it close.

The formula is tried and true: the Bengals look terrible and fall behind; then they start to make a comeback; they make it look like they might just be able to pull off a win; finally, they blow it horribly.

Bengals fans got a first look at life after Burrow. Without Joe Burrow at quarterback, the Bengals will have to get used to Brandon Allen, Ryan Finley, or whoever whose abilities they can overestimate.

After a narrow defeat that really should have been more pronounced, what did we learn about the Burrow-less Bengals?

Special Teams is the strength of the Bengals

It’s rare when the special teams unit carries the team, but it happened on Sunday. The gap would have been much farther than two points if not for special teams.

The first score of the game for the Bengals was on a kickoff return. Brandon Wilson has been a special teams ace the last few years, whether returning kicks or covering on punt returns.

When the offense hit yet another three-and-out in the second half, the Bengals’ dialed up a fake punt. That gave the offense the juice it needed, and it looked like the Bengals might put a drive together. Of course, it came to a screeching halt, but at least it got the offense going.

Then, Alex Erickson, the master of the fair catch, had a 29-yard punt return. It gave the Bengals a realistic chance to close the game out until another Allen turnover squandered yet another gift from special teams.

The offense only manufactured seven of the Bengals’ 17 points. If it weren’t for the special teams and the defense, the game would have been lopsided in the Giants’ favor.

Which brings us to defense.

Defense is stepping up

If Burrow were in the game, keeping the Giants to 19 points would have been enough to win.

It was against and poor-quality opponent, but the defense played one of their better games this week. All of the linebackers played extremely well. Josh Bynes and Germaine Pratt looked improved, and Akeem Davis-Gaither had one of his better games.

Mackensie Alexander had a few bad plays, but overall he was one of the best defenders on the team. For the most part, the secondary played an outstanding game.

The only thorn in their side was Evan Ingram. But to Lou Anarumo’s credit (which is a phrase I don’t think I’ve ever used before), he didn’t keep sending Vonn Bell out to cover him in hopes that it would just start working magically. Bell, Wilson, and Alexander all got their shot at covering the tight end. While the former two didn’t have much success, at least Anarumo was trying to find something that worked.

All in all, if you take out Ingram, you remove about half of the Giants’ passing offense. And he did most of his damage on only two plays. The performance, in the big picture, could be considered a net positive. For the second level at least.

The defensive line needs pressure

For as well as the back seven played, the line needs to figure something out.

Daniel Jones entered the game as the fourth-most sacked quarterback in the NFL, and the Bengals didn’t record a single sack.

It was too easy for the Giants to key on Carl Lawson and let the rest of the unit flop.

Yes, the Bengals are mostly playing guys that they promoted off the practice squad. But they need to find ways to pressure the opposing quarterback regardless. It’s just too easy to sit back in the pocket and wait for the coverage to break down, especially with LeShaun Sims filling in, or with Bell on a tight end.

The Bengals are third-worst in sacks per game. They need to figure out a way to get to the quarterback, bad line or not.

Brandon Allen is not the answer

Burrow really ruined our standards for quarterbacks.

It’s pretty clear that Allen is not a starting level quarterback.

The offense only had one drive of more than 31 yards the entire game, which was in the last four minutes. The second longest drive of the game ended in a punt. The third longest drive of the game started near midfield, and ended in a field goal.

Allen only created one scoring opportunity, which he converted into a touchdown to Tee Higgins. The special teams and defense created three or four opportunities, and Allen squandered all but one.

The kickoff returned for a touchdown was completely independent of Allen and the offense. Then, the defense gave Allen the ball at his own 45-yard line, which ended in a field goal.

Then the special teams gave the offense fresh life after getting a first down on a fake punt. This wasn’t necessarily a scoring opportunity, but it gave Allen a second chance on that drive. He took that chance and threw an interception.

Finally, after the defense made a crucial stop, Erickson returned the punt to the 50-yard line. All the Bengals had to do was gain about 15 yards to set up a roughly 50-yard field goal. Granted, Bullock isn’t great from that range, but is three of four this season. It would still be perfectly feasible.

But Allen held onto the ball for nearly five seconds, took a sack, and fumbled the ball away.

Imagine what Joe Burrow could have done with that play.

Should Allen start again? No. Will he? Yes, and here’s why: the other alternative is Ryan Finley.

Finley, who the Bengals’ traded up to get, who passed the Parcells test, and who was the only backup quarterback on the active roster for the first 11 games, is a worse alternative than Allen.

The Bengals offense came to a complete halt without Joe Burrow to maintain consistency.

The Bengals had a much closer loss than many anticipated. Part of that could be attributed to the Giants being forced to remind everyone that Colt McCoy is still in the NFL as he had to replaced an injured Daniel Jones. However, the defense really did its job holding New York under 20 points. Even if it was super ugly at times.

There is still plenty to takeaway from this games snap count. It may be the first one without Joe Burrow involved, but you can see the difference in some things that the Bengals’ offense is doing already.

Here are the snap count takeaways from the Bengals’ loss to the Giants in Week 12:

In theme with last week, this space that is normally dedicated to talking about why the Bengals either out snapped or were out snapped during the game Sunday (the Giants ran 81 plays to the Bengals 49) will be used to go more in depth about Burrow’s impact. Burrow’s last full game the offense ran 65 plays. Prior to that it seemed the average snaps were between the high 60’s and high 70’s. Last week the team ran 18 plays in just under a half of football after Burrow had 50 plays early in the third quarter. Brandon Allen had the team running 49 plays on Sunday. Some of that is because Brandon Wilson returned a kickoff, but most of it is Cincinnati being three of 10 on third down, 11 total first downs on the day and three turnovers. The only sustained drive Allen led was when the Bengals were down two scores late in garbage time. This offense doesn’t have consistency without Burrow.

One interesting thing that sticks out is Giovani Bernard’s snaps. He played 38 snaps, which isn’t an unusual amount for him, but that accounted for roughly 78 percent of the snaps. Last week, it was closer to an even split with Samaje Perine (7), who even saw some playing time get taken away by Trayveon Williams (5). It makes sense to have the best back out there as often as possible, and it will be interesting to see if that remains the norm over the next few weeks with Joe Mixon on injured reserve.

The starting offensive line saw a change up again. Quinton Spain returned to left guard, and Alex Redmond (20) started at right guard, but suffered a concussion at the end of the second quarter. The team then sent Michael Jordan (29) back out at left guard. At this point in the season, I do not understand going right back to Jordan. Hakeem Adeniji didn’t play a single snap with Bobby Hart returning as the starting right tackle after replacing the rookie last week. It seems like giving Adeniji a shot at right guard would’ve made sense. At this point we know Jordan isn’t playing well this season, and that is a perfect chance to see if the versatile Adeniji could be a solution to their interior line struggles. Instead they are content to watch a player who has struggled all season continue to struggle.

Geno Atkins (18) continues to only play in what seems to be obvious passing situations. It is hard to say whether he isn’t 100 percent healthy or if this is a coaching decision. Shawn Williams had another fake punt converted for a first down this week to go along with only three defensive plays on the day

Josh Bynes (60) led all linebackers in snaps, and I can’t fault playing him that much this week as he played one heck of a game, and he was all over the field. Germaine Pratt and Logan Wilson both played 45 snaps on the day, and Akeem Davis-Gaither pulled up the distant rear with only seven snaps. It would be wonderful to see him get more playing time to try and figure out what this team has in the rookie, but it is hard to create time when the three guys in front of him played pretty good football all day.

In the wake of Wilson’s kickoff return, Bengals fans have continued their quest to try and figure out why he isn’t also returning punts. I have a deeper question I want to throw out there. Why hasn’t he played offense yet? He played running back at Houston and many projected him at that position in the NFL. Cincinnati is in desperate need of a home run hitter on offense, and why this team hasn’t tried to run the plays they are hellbent on running with Alex Erickson with Wilson instead is kind of baffling. It just shows another area where this coaching staff doesn’t seem to find itself in a need to be creative. Are his 13 snaps on defense not easily replaced with giving more time to Williams?

Two of the Bengals veterans struggled to do anything in Allen’s first start.

The Cincinnati Bengals were without their starting quarterback and starting running back as they welcomed the New York Giants. However, the Bengals didn’t just lay down and roll over in a game that was easily winnable.

After starting down 7-0, the Bengals received a glimmer of hope as Brandon Wilson had a 103-yard kick return. The two teams eventually went into halftime all knotted up at ten points each.

The Bengals eventually went down 19-10 before a late-game Tee Higgins touchdown gave them some hope with just over two minutes remaining. After forcing a three-and-out, the Bengals’ Allen fumbled, draining any hope those in Paul Brown Stadium had.

The Bengals lost 19-17, but they learned quite a bit about their new quarterback and about the resilience of their roster. That said, Allen, overall, played well in his first start — giving hope to an otherwise defeated fanbase.

Allen went 17/29 with one touchdown and one interception. He surprisingly had the only passing touchdown of the game. As for Allen, many of Burrow’s favorite targets translated to the new, relatively young quarterback.

Allen targeted Tyler Boyd the most with Tee Higgins and Drew Sample both coming in second place with five targets apiece. Following those three were A.J. Green and Giovani Bernard who both received three looks.

Green was targeted three times but held without a reception for the third time this season. He combined with Auden Tate to total five targets and no receptions, a brutal stat for Cincinnati’s offense.

By far their most experienced receiver, getting Green involved is paramount, but the connection just wasn’t there.

Thankfully, Boyd and Higgins did provide some form of a safety blanket. Higgins caught all five of his targets for 44 yards and the Bengals’ only offensive touchdown. Boyd caught three of his six targets for 15 yards.

Sample’s four receptions, the second most on the team, also helped ease Allen’s nerves as he provided a large target in the middle of the field.

With no Joe Mixon, here’s a rundown of how Allen divided up the targets against the Giants.

Tyler Boyd 6

Tee Higgins 5

Drew Sample 5

Giovani Bernard 3

A.J. Green 3

Auden Tate 2

Trayveon Williams 1

The Bengals nearly pulled off the upset but ultimately fell by just two points.

That certainly was a football game. Fans who endured got a treat by being reminded that Colt McCoy is still in the NFL as he came in relief for Daniel Jones about halfway through the game against the Giants.

Of course, the Bengals were dealing with their ow issues at quarterback with Brandon Allen replacing Joe Burrow. The story of the game really became which backup could do enough to not lose the game, and that answer was the guy everyone would’ve sworn was out of the NFL. That made for quite the reactions from fans.

Starting hot

Brandon Wilson refused to let the Bengals struggle to get their first points of the day. He took his first kickoff back 103 yards for a touchdown. It may have been the best part of the day for a Cincinnati team that didn’t have many more bright spots on the day.
