The Bengals’ roster finally seems to be set, as does their practice squad. What were the surprises? How strong does is look? John and Anthony break it all down.

It’s full-speed ahead to Week 1 of the regular season, as the Bengals have concluded their final preseason game and have put forth their final roster. Additionally, they’ve rounded out their practice squad with some quality depth, as they prepare to host the Minnesota Vikings.

While there are questions at some spots, this has to be one of the team’s best-looking rosters—from both a talent and health standpoint—in recent memory. Is it enough to make them a sneaky playoff team?

On this week’s show:

Was it surprising to see the Bengals go so light at quarterback and running back on the final roster?

The team currently has five wide receivers on the active roster after a couple of waiver wire additions. Will they re-add later at the position?

One of our favorite Bengals in recent history, Mike Daniels, was cut from the squad. What does his replacement, B.J. Hill, bring to the team?

Every year, “the collective we” gripe about a handful of cuts and how certain players won’t make it through waivers. Inevitably, most/all do and end up on the Bengals’ practice squad. A number of popular names landed there on Tuesday to shore up team depth.

Do we believe the Bengals did the right thing on the offensive line having so many unproven guys behind the starters?

The safety group is definitely a major strength of this team’s roster.

And more!

John and Anthony look at the roster, the moves and how the practice squad shook out. Our thanks to those of you who joined us for the live show. If you weren’t able to, catch it on your favorite audio platform and our YouTube channel!

There are only a few open spots for undrafted free agents on the Bengals’ roster. What do they have to do to make the cut?

There is always one late-round pick or undrafted free agent that fans love to root for during Bengals training camp.

Following the 2021 NFL draft, the Bengals added six college free agents to their roster. That means six players will try to make their NFL dreams come true while bypassing the draft.

The model for UDFAs would be Alex Erickson. He went undrafted in 2016 and ended up playing five seasons in Cincinnati. The Bengals’ didn’t bring him back for a sixth, so the search is on for the next Erickson.

Roster spots for UDFAs are never guaranteed, but in any given year, there might be one or two spots up for grabs. By and large, these players went undrafted for one reason or another, but some work hard to prove what a mistake that was.

What will each UDFA that the Bengals picked up in May have to do in order to secure a roster spot?

Pooka Williams Jr.: Return punts

The Bengals only carried four running backs last year, and three of them are back. The Bengals also drafted Chris Evans, so it seems like the running back room is full at the moment.

It seems like if there is any vulnerability in the running back room, it’s Trayveon Williams. Pooka Williams needs to everything Williams can do, plus some. One opportunity he has will be on special teams returning punts.

Alex Erickson caught every single punt the Bengals received in 2020, but he’s now a Houston Texan. Darius Phillips returned three punts in 2019, so that’s who Williams will have to beat out.

If he can prove that he is the best punt returner the Bengals have, then he should get a spot on the Bengals’ roster. That's how Erickson got his spot, and he held it for five years.

Riley Lees: Show off explosiveness and quickness

Lees was a slot receiver with Northwestern, but didn’t show enough there to be drafted. However, with Erickson gone, that opens up a path to the roster for Lees.

Just like Williams, Lees will have to contribute on special teams. Returning punts won’t hurt, but coverage on kicks and punts will be crucial as well.

However, Lees has the opportunity to fill a role that no one else on the roster currently holds. Lees needs to prove himself on offense as a gadget player. Erickson had a few plays as a gadget player from time to time, but this is something that Zac Taylor would probably love to do more. Lees is just a shade slower than Erickson, but if he can work on his explosiveness and quickness, he can carve out a niche role that would have little competition.

Drue Chrisman: Beat out Kevin Huber

The path to the roster for Chrisman is through a 36-year old veteran in Huber.

Huber doesn’t appear to hampered by age quite yet, and still has one year left on his contract. It’s going to be an uphill battle for Chrisman. He has to outdo Huber by a wide margin.

The Bengals’ plan for Chrisman is probably to stash him on the practice squad this year and make him Huber’s replacement for next year. But if he wants to make the roster this year, he has to prove himself against the former Pro Bowler.

Pro Wells and Darius Hodge: Whatever the coaching staff asks

For Wells and Hodge, versatility is the name of the game.

The tight end room is full of undrafted players, like Thaddeus Moss, Mitchell Wilcox, and Cheyenne O’Grady. There might be two backup spots, so the competition will be intense. So how does Wells rise above the pack? By run blocking, pass protecting, route running, making contested catches, and probably a few more things. He has to show that he’s versatile and can stand for either C.J. Uzomah or Drew Sample if need be.

The same goes for Hodge, who was the fourth EDGE prospect the Bengals added in 2021 after Joseph Ossai, Cam Sample, and Wyatt Hubert.

Hodge has to prove that he can fit the scheme and play multiple positions. He has to rush the passer, bring down running backs, and even cover tight ends. He has to show Lou Anarumo that he can play in any scenario.

Antonio Phillips: Excel in special teams

The Bengals carried six cornerbacks last season, and added two in free agency. There are five virtual locks at the position, so Antonio Phillips will have to compete with Jalen Davis, Donnie Lewis, Winston Rose, and Tony Brown for those last one or two spots. He also has to excel at special teams, which means he is also competing against Pooka Williams, Lees, and a number of other eager youngsters.

Of all the UDFAs, Phillips has the murkiest path to the roster.

Ramsey went 7-2 as a Big Ten starter in 2020 and led Northwestern to a Citrus Bowl win over Auburn.

The Cincinnati Bengals hosted free agent quarterback Peyton Ramsey for a workout today, according to Yahoo Sports reporter Eric Edholm. Ramsey recently worked out for the Carolina Panthers at their rookie minicamp but was not signed.

This actually isn’t the first time the Bengals met with the 6-foot-2, 215-pound Ramsey this offseason, as they reportedly met with him at some point during the pre-draft process. Ramsey did not hear his name called in the NFL Draft and is still waiting to find his professional home.

Ramsey played the first three years of his college career with Indiana before transferring to Northwestern for the 2020 season. He finished his career with 8,314 passing yards (65.2% completion rate), 54 touchdown passes, 31 interceptions, and a 131.2 passer rating.

This past season at Northwestern, Ramsey threw for 1,733 yards (61% completion rate) and 12 scores vs. eight picks in nine games with a 121.0 passer rating. He did go 7-2 as a starter, led Northwestern to the Big Ten Championship Game (fell 22-10 to Ohio State), and scored a 35-19 win over Auburn in the Citrus Bowl.

NFL.com gave Ramsey a 5.56 draft grade and projected him to be a priority free agent.

Joe Burrow appears ready for Week 1, but the talking heads are worrying about a similar ending to 2021 akin to his rookie year. John and Anthony attempt to dispel that notion, while also looking at some takeaways from the recent minicamp.

Minicamps are in full-swing and we are getting the first glimpses at some of the newest Bengals players. Excitement is building as the Bengals look to have a breakout year in Zac Taylor’s third season as head coach.

A major source of the excitement these days centers around recent reports that Joe Burrow will be definitively set to start Week 1 for Cincinnati. It wasn’t in a lot of doubt, but Burrow’s doctor noted that he is way ahead of schedule in his rehab.

However, the national media believes that a similar outcome could occur in 2021 to that of last year. Why? Because the perception is that the Bengals didn’t do enough on the offensive line to prevent further protection issues for their star quarterback.

How accurate is that perception? Who could surprise us in training camp, based on these minicamps? John and Anthony discuss those topics and more this week!

Ja’Marr Chase, Jackson Carman and the rest of the Bengals’ rookie class took the field for the first time on Friday.

10 draft picks, six college free agents, and a handful of hopeful others made up the Cincinnati Bengals rookie minicamp session on Friday inside Paul Brown Stadium. It was the first time we got to see the newest additions to the team take the field together and run drills amongst each other.

Headlining the day was fifth-overall pick Ja’Marr Chase, who very much looked the part of an athletic No. 1 receiver. Chase and his fellow rookies were in shorts and pad-less jerseys, but that’s football in May for you.

This was the only practice of minicamp, as the team had until Sunday to get a session in before the next phase of the offseason program begins. Local media was able to capture videos and images of Chase and other new Bengals on the field for the first time.

O’Grady will provide more competition at tight end.

The Cincinnati Bengals have signed free agents Eric Dungey and Cheyenne O’Grady. Both participated in the team’s rookie minicamp Friday as tryout players.

Dungey, a 6-3, 226-pound quarterback, is a first-year player by way of the Syracuse Orange, who was originally a college free agent signee of the New York Giants in 2019. He later spent time on the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad but did not see game action for either team. He was not with an NFL team in 2020.

O’Grady, a 6-4, 253-pound tight end, is a rookie from the Arkansas Razorbacks who spent five seasons (2015-19) at the school with a redshirt year in 2015. He played in 26 career games for the Razorbacks and caught 80 passes for 858 yards and 10 scores. Although he was eligible for the draft in 2020, he has not previously signed with an NFL team and will thus be classified as a rookie.

Cincinnati’s class of undrafted free agents becomes official just in time for rookie minicamp.

The Cincinnati Bengals have officially agreed to terms with six undrafted free agents leading up to Friday’s rookie minicamp.

Drue Chrisman is a punter formerly of the Ohio State Buckeyes. In four seasons for the Buckeyes, Chrisman averaged nearly 44 yards per punt with only 20% of his punts being returned, per Pro Football Focus. Chrisman went to Cincinnati’s LaSalle high school before attending Ohio State, so he’s very much following the path of another Cincinnati native Kevin Huber.

Darius Hodge is a defensive end formerly of the Marshall Thundering Herd. The Bengals are listing him as a linebacker likely because of his size at 6’1” and 248 pounds. His best chance at making the final roster might be as a linebacker, but Hodge had a productive career as a pass rusher for Marshall. He racked up over 20 tackles for loss and 15 sacks in three seasons.

Riley Lees is a wide receiver formerly of the Northwestern Wildcats. During his career at Northwestern, Lees hauled in 111 receptions for 1,093 yards and nine touchdowns. He was also a return man for the Wildcats, returning 53 punts for 378 yards and 26 kicks for 542 yards in his career.

Antonio Phillips is a cornerback formerly of the Ball State Cardinals. In his four years at Ball State, Phillips started 29 games while recording 26 pass defenses and eight interceptions. Though he played and contributed for all four years, Phillips missed at least one game due to injury every year for the Cardinals.

Pro Wells is a tight end formerly of the TCU Horned Frogs. Wells lead TCU in touchdowns in each of the two seasons he started. He eventually got to TCU after making a stop at New York’s Milford Academy and then Northwest Mississippi Community College. Wells was originally going to play with Hodge at Marshall because he had an offer to play both football and basketball, and he ended up being his teammate anyway.

Pooka Williams is a running back formerly of the Kansas Jayhawks. During his three seasons at Kansas, Williams rushed for 2,382 yards on just 415 carries in addition to his 534 receiving yards on 66 receptions. He had off the field troubles at Kansas that helped him go undrafted, and now he gets a fresh start in the NFL.
