The Bengals find their third QB.

The Cincinnati Bengals have signed QB Jake Browning to the practice squad and released punter Drue Chrisman from it, the team announced Tuesday.

Browning, weighing in at 6-foot-2 and 209 pounds, is a first-year player by way of the Washington Huskies. He was originally a college free agent signee of the Minnesota Vikings in 2019, the team Cincinnati plays this week. He spent the last two seasons (2019-20) on the Vikings’ practice squad and was waived on Sept. 1st this year.

Chrisman, a rookie, was a college free agent signee of the Bengals in May by way of the Ohio State Buckeyes. Even with practice squads being expanded to 16 players, it’s not often that a team keeps a backup punter, so it’s no real surprise to see him let go to make room for Browning.

Because of the threat of COVID-19 compromising entire position groups, many NFL teams now keep an emergency QB on the practice squad who actually stays isolated from the team’s other QBs. That’s what the Bengals did last year with Brandon Allen. He was initially signed to the practice squad, then only had virtual meetings with the other QBs and coaches before he was signed to the active roster when Joe Burrow went down.

Look for a similar situation to play out with Browning.

Daniels returns after being released last week.

The Cincinnati Bengals today have released cornerback Winston Rose from their practice squad. To replace Rose, they signed defensive tackle Mike Daniels.

Rose, a first-year player out of New Mexico, originally joined the Bengals early in the 2020 offseason before spending the entire season on the practice squad. Cincinnati brought him back on a futures deal and waived him on August 31st as a part of final cuts. Rose was added back to the practice squad a day later.

Daniels, a 10th-year player out of Iowa, was also one of the final cuts the Bengals made last week. He seemed like a lock to make the roster before the B.J. Hill trade occurred. Hill’s arrival made Daniels expendable, but the Bengals have managed to bring him back to the practice fields and the locker room. He played and started 11 games for the Bengals in 2020 and re-signed with the team back in March.

Daniels’ one-year, $1.5 million deal with the team has been terminated and he’ll now be paid significantly less from week-to-week. That said, considering his experience, he’ll have a decent chance of being regularly elevated to the active roster to earn active roster game checks.

Welcome back Mike!

Irwin made the Bengals’ initial 53-man roster.

The Cincinnati Bengals have had to make some tough roster cuts this week, but the good news is most of the promising prospects who didn’t make the 53-man roster are now on the practice squad.

The latest example is wide receiver Trenton Irwin, who will fill the 16th spot on the Bengals’ practice squad, according to Jay Morrison. Irwin was waived Wednesday to make room for the additions of defensive end Wyatt Ray and defensive back Nick McCloud to the roster after being claimed off waivers.

Originally an undrafted free agent out of Stanford in 2019, Irwin appeared in 53 career college games and caught 152 passes (10th in school history) for 1,738 yards (12th in school history) and five touchdowns. He also returned 22 punts for 230 yards.

As a senior in 2018, Irwin hauled in 60 passes for 685 yards and two scores. He finished his college career with at least one catch in 40-straight games.

Irwin would spend most of the 2019 and ‘20 seasons on the Bengals practice squad before having a breakout during this year’s training camp and preseason, which helped him make the initial 53-man roster.

Kareem can return after Week 3 this year.

The Cincinnati Bengals today have placed defensive end Khalid Kareem on the Reserve/Injured list. In a corresponding move, they’ve re-signed wide receiver Mike Thomas.

Kareem, a second-year player out of Notre Dame, was originally a fifth-round pick by the Bengals in the 2020 NFL Draft and played in all 16 games as a rookie. He suffered a shoulder injury earlier in the offseason and missed a few weeks of training camp and the first two weeks of the preseason because of his ailment. He did end up playing in the preseason finale, but re-aggravated his injury after just 11 snaps.

Since he made the initial 53-man roster, Kareem can return from I.R. after the first three weeks of the season. All players placed on I.R. during the season can return after three weeks.

Thomas, a sixth-year player out of Southern Miss, was originally a sixth-round pick by the Los Angeles Rams in the 2016 NFL Draft. He signed with the Bengals last offseason and ended up playing 14 games. Cincinnati re-signed him this offseason to a one-year deal, but terminated his contract as one of the final cuts earlier this week.

It was surprising to see Thomas released, considering the team was left with just five receivers, but they clearly had a plan to bring him back in case they needed to place Kareem on I.R.

These moves bring the Bengals to six receivers and 10 defensive linemen on the active roster.

The Bengals got rid of quite a bit of depth at the interior offensive line position, but Zac Taylor is confident in his sixth round pick.

There are always a few surprises when it gets to the final cutdown day in the NFL.

The Cincinnati Bengals’ biggest surprise may have been the amount of trust they are putting in their rookies to be backups along the offensive line.

Former Georgia Bulldogs center Trey Hill may be the most surprising as a sixth-round pick. Head coach Zac Taylor thought the rookie made it an easy decision, though.

Zac Taylor said rookie center Trey Hill’s “play speed,” strength and improvement in practice gives him confidence in the Bengals sixth round pick as the backup center.
— Charlie Goldsmith (@CharlieG__) August 31, 2021

Hill was seen as a pretty great value pick when Cincinnati selected him in this year’s draft. Still, he was coming off a season where he had surgery on both knees, so it was really anyone’s guess as to how early he would be back to 100% and pushing for a roster spot.

The Bengals have been far more accustomed in the past couple of seasons to giving the nod to the veteran player while waiving their late round selections to place on the practice squad. That makes Hill’s nod as the backup center all the more surprising. However, it clearly shows what he has shown the coaching staff.

Hill proving he has what it takes to provide depth at the interior offensive line position allowed Cincinnati to get some value for former-first round pick Billy Price — who was likely to be looking for a chance to start fresh somewhere next offseason when his contract expired — a move that is shocking to see from Cincinnati.

He also likely played a part in the team feeling comfortable with moving on from former-fourth-round pick Michael Jordan. Sure, rookies like Jackson Carman and D’Ante Smith who both also showed flashes at guard behind veterans like Xavier Su’a-Filo and Quinton Spain were probably a driving force there. But this is a team that knows what it is like to have to rely on your third or fourth option along the offensive line after getting hit with a rash of injuries last season. The fact he is listed as a center/guard speaks volumes there.

Hill’s presence in the initial 53-man roster also shows that the Bengals and offensive line coach had a mission going into 2021 to try and jumpstart this line with new blood. The team has four players who weren’t with the team last year. The three rookies and Riley Reiff are new blood. Reiff may be the only new starter currently, but it probably won’t be long till we see players like Hill pushing for starting spots on this line.

Pollack has his young guys to mold now, and clearly he has players like Hill farther ahead of schedule than many of the most optimistic fans could’ve even anticipated.

With the roster now set at 53 players, some good players won’t be on the opening roster for next Sunday.

With the roster now set at the 53-man limit for the 2021-22 season, we get to look back at some of the biggest roster cuts the Cincinnati Bengals made.

Thankfully, most of these guys were brought back to the practice squad, but guys like Michael Jordan (Carolina Panthers) have left town for good.

And then on Wednesday, the Bengals cut veteran receiver Mike Thomas and waived fellow receiver Trenton Irwin.

There were several other big names that got cut throughout the last two days. That brings up the question of who was the toughest player for the Bengals to cut for the opening day roster?

With names such as Michael Jordan, Thaddeus Moss, Trent Taylor, Trayvon Henderson, or Jacques Patrick not making the roster, there are arguments that could be made for each player being the toughest player the team had to let go by the deadline this afternoon. Even though most of the players cut wouldn’t be a make or break player for the potential of the team this season, seeing some of these young skill players leave does sting.

In my opinion the toughest cut was Trent Taylor. The slot receiver out of Louisiana Tech, performed well in training camp and throughout the preseason, so well he had many expecting him to make the opening day roster due to the praises given by Zac Taylor.

Even though the team got Taylor to join the practice squad, it was undoubtedly a very tough call to make, especially now that there are only five receivers on the 53-man roster.

Who do you think was the toughest cut for the Bengals to make this week? Let us know in the poll below!

The Bengals’ roster finally seems to be set, as does their practice squad. What were the surprises? How strong does is look? John and Anthony break it all down.

It’s full-speed ahead to Week 1 of the regular season, as the Bengals have concluded their final preseason game and have put forth their final roster. Additionally, they’ve rounded out their practice squad with some quality depth, as they prepare to host the Minnesota Vikings.

While there are questions at some spots, this has to be one of the team’s best-looking rosters—from both a talent and health standpoint—in recent memory. Is it enough to make them a sneaky playoff team?

On this week’s show:

Was it surprising to see the Bengals go so light at quarterback and running back on the final roster?

The team currently has five wide receivers on the active roster after a couple of waiver wire additions. Will they re-add later at the position?

One of our favorite Bengals in recent history, Mike Daniels, was cut from the squad. What does his replacement, B.J. Hill, bring to the team?

Every year, “the collective we” gripe about a handful of cuts and how certain players won’t make it through waivers. Inevitably, most/all do and end up on the Bengals’ practice squad. A number of popular names landed there on Tuesday to shore up team depth.

Do we believe the Bengals did the right thing on the offensive line having so many unproven guys behind the starters?

The safety group is definitely a major strength of this team’s roster.

And more!
