Rodgers, just like all of Cincinnati, is a fan of Burrow.

While the Cincinnati Bengals played far from a perfect game, they did give rookie kicker Evan McPherson two chances to win the game, both at the end of regulation and in overtime.

However, Cincinnati lost 25-22 in a thrilling game that featured two of the league’s dominant quarterbacks, One in the back half of his career, league MVP Aaron Rodgers, and one just starting out, second-year star Joe Burrow.

Following the game, the two shared a quick conversation. As a guest on the Pat McAfee show, Rodgers dove into what he told the 24-year-old.

Rodgers told Burrow: “Slide.”

Rodgers said he told Andrew Luck the same thing. Burrow took a nasty hit in the first half of the game, trying to run for a first down. It initially looked like Burrow’s day might have been over at that moment, but he returned the next drive.

Here’s the hit that shook Burrow up.

Burrow went for 281 yards and two touchdowns on the day. He also had two interceptions which negated some of his excellent performance. This was Burrow’s fifth-straight game with at least two touchdowns.

As for Rodgers, he was able to have the final laugh on Sunday, but having thrown an interception, his performance was still flawed.

That said, the best part about the Bengals-Packers game was that Cincinnati showed they can hang with a competitor. The Bengals have one bad loss on their resume and have taken down Pittsburgh and Minnesota, two capable, mid-tier opponents.

Behind an ever-improving Joe Burrow, who hopefully learns to slide more often when he runs, the Bengals could potentially make the playoffs. This winnable, down to the second game certainly hurt.

The Bengals now take their talents up to Detroit for their Week 6 matchup.

The Bengals were oh-so-close to a signature win against one of the league’s best teams, but some mistakes disallowed them to get to 4-1.

It’s hard to know how to feel after this one. Optimism and frustration are melding together, as Cincinnati lost a heartbreaker at home to and NFC powerhouse.

Here are some of the best and worst elements from the Cincinnati Bengals’ in their 22-25 loss on Sunday to the Packers.

The good

Joe Burrow’s rebounds:

The franchise quarterback had a couple of misfires and there were many other obstacles to overcome from teammates and coaches, but No. 9 still had the team in position to win the game multiple times. After two second quarter punts, Green Bay took a somewhat-commanding 16-7 lead before halftime.

Burrow’s solution? Connecting on a 70-yard bomb to Ja’Marr Chase to completely turn the complexion of the game.

After throwing an interception to open the third quarter, Burrow got the offense into scoring situations twice in the fourth quarter, with the last being an opportunity to win the game. Burrow also threw an interception in overtime, but overcame it to get the Bengals back into game-winning territory again.

While it wasn’t Burrow’s best game, he led comeback attempts via touchdown passes, two-point conversion throws and methodical drives to overcome mistakes—be it his own or from others. That’s a trend we’ve seen in his young career and a great one to have for the Bengals, as they won’t be “out” of many games under No. 9’s watch.

Ja’Marr Chase:

The No. 5 overall pick is a budding superstar. Every week he seems to make a big play, or, like, three as it pertains to this past week. Whether it was the 70-yard bomb, a toe-gab catch in overtime, a bobbling catch in traffic, or other routine ones, Chase stole the show once again on Sunday.

And he’s now in elite company with statistical performances. He joined Marvin Harrison (2003) with with big plays in his first five games and is also on par with Randy Moss’s great rookie campaign, as well.

Moral victories?:

Not many love the idea of taking these from a loss, but there were positives to take away from the loss. Cincinnati hung tough and had opportunities to beat one of the best teams and quarterbacks in the AFC. Not bad for a team pegged for yet another rebuilding year by a lot of outlets.

While a win would have been another huge foundational building block for Zac Taylor, this performance can also breed some confidence. Instead of feeling like they have a long way to go, everyone in that locker room is feeling like they can hang with and beat anyone in the NFL.

The bad

Some Burrow decisions:

For the great comeback wizardry Burrow continues to show, there were also signs of this being his “rookie season”, of sorts. The franchise quarterback has less than a full NFL season of accrued starts, so some growing pains, even with the great No. 9, are still to be expected.

The overtime interception seemed to be more of the miscommunication ilk, but the one right after halftime provided a valuable learning experience. After completing the big touchdown to Chase to get the Bengals back in the game, it was a golden opportunity for the Bengals to control the contest via back-to-back scores sandwiched around the midway break.

Instead, Burrow got overzealous and threw an ill-advised pass that was intercepted. This isn’t a call for Burrow to “rein it in”, by any means, but there are times where he’ll need to “live to play another down”, instead of cleaning up his own mess later in a game.

The Drew Sample/Auden Tate disparity:

In truth, I liked the idea of getting Sample involved as a potential option to cause damage with attention drawn elsewhere. However, Sample didn’t fully step up when his number was called.

He was targeted four times against Green Bay, but only made two catches for a total of nine yards. He dropped one that would have bailed out Burrow, and on another, he tripped over “the turf monster” to limit the play to six yards.

Meanwhile, by comparison as our buddy Willie Lutz points out, Tate has been targeted three times the entire season.

Hard to believe Drew Sample had more targets against the #Packers (4) than Auden Tate has had all season (3).
— Willie Lutz (@willie_lutz) October 13, 2021

Obviously, the two men play different positions, but with the Bengals ranking 23rd in the NFL on third down conversion percentage (37.3%), one would think Tate would be thought of in the offensive game plan a little bit more. Tate can move the chains, has an excellent catch radius and makes contested catches.

Just a thought after a week with more questions on coaching decisions.

Questions on Zac Taylor’s in-game approach:

Speaking of, this has been a talking point since the loss. The Tate/Sample discussion aside, decisions on kicking a 57-yarder, not going for it on fourth downs and other issues are elements eliciting inquiries.

In one instance early in the first quarter, the Bengals were faced with a 4th-and-9 from the Green Bay 41-yard line. A hard conversion, to be sure, so the Bengals punted. Unfortunately, the punt went into the end zone for a net of 20 yards. Yikes.

With Burrow and the offense clicking late in the game, not going for it to get Evan McPherson into easier territory (and, for the superstitious, just a bad game for kickers, in general) by going for it on 4th-and-inches. We all know what happened afterward.

Of course, hindsight is 20-20, but hopefully Taylor, like Burrow, takes away some lessons learned as well—particularly when witnessing what happened with the Colts on Monday night.

More questions than answers on team viability:

While the aforementioned moral victories are nice and may resonate more this week than many others, people are wondering just how good this Bengals team is right now. They’ve shown great fortitude and effort, particularly when the chips appear to be down, but this was a statement game they let slip through their fingers.

And, even while we’re all relatively-pleased with the 3-2 start, the reality remains the three wins have come against teams with a combined record of 4-11. They place themselves firmly back into the top of the AFC playoff picture again with a win this week over the Lions...who are 0-5.

The point of the matter is that the Bengals need to start winning these games—not just to be taken seriously by national pundits, but also to achieve their championship aspirations. Burrow and Taylor beating the likes of Rodgers and LaFleur, Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid, Lamar Jackson and John Harbaugh is the road to a Lombardi Trophy.

The ugly

Allowance of a 300-yard passer, 100-yard rusher and 200-yard passer:

Lou Anarumo’s unit has been a big part of the team’s early-season successes, but there were a lot of issues on that side of the ball this week. We knew the Packers were going to put up stats and points, but their hitting of the statistical trifecta stung.

There were communication issues in the secondary and the linebackers didn’t make impact plays we’ve seen in the first month. Trey Hendrickson got after the quarterback, but others had trouble doing so.

There were positives to take away for sure, and it wasn’t all on the defense, but they needed to limit things and not rely on a historically-bad day of kicking as a big crutch to keep the game within reach. Again, troubles were expected this week, but a couple more plays here and there, and we’re likely talking about a different outcome.

Squandering multiple victory opportunities and missteps in clutch situations:

The two missed kicks by McPherson are obvious here, but there were other gaffes that really cost the team. We mentioned some issues with Sample, Burrow’s interceptions and others, but there are others.

Late in the third quarter, Cincinnati opted to go for it on 4th-and-2. Burrow converted on a draw. It was called back by a holding penalty and forced another punt.

There are so many moments in which to point (and we have), but teams just can’t trip over their own feet like this against one of the league’s elite teams. Minimize the mistakes and the Bengals could become one of those elite teams themselves.

Does anyone want to make a kick?!:

Just a painful, painful afternoon for special teamers. McPherson and Mason Crosby combined to miss 16 collective points, as their respective teams and fans agonized over almost five full quarters of football.

For the Bengals’ side of things, it was a sobering set of moments for their big-legged rookie kicker, as he’s already iced two wins this year. However, McPherson has missed three field goal attempts in the past two games after not missing at all in the preseason and first three contests.

Let’s hope it’s a blip on the radar and not a blossoming trend.

Most Valuable Player

Joe Burrow:

Ja’Marr Chase:

The kid just keeps ascending into superstardom. He had six catches for 159 yards for a whopping 26.5 yards per catch. He had about three or four highlight reel catches in the game.

Samaje Perine:

Perine had to step up with Mixon being banged up and did so. He had 59 yards on 11 carries (5.4 yards per carry) along with four catches for 24 yards and a touchdown through the air.

Trey Hendrickson:

Cincinnati’s defense had issues this week, but Hendrickson was one of the best players. He had two sacks and four total tackles.

Unsung Hero of the Week

Joe Mixon:

The Bengals’ star running back had to take a back seat this Sunday, as he had an injured ankle. However, he managed to still make some plays, grinding out 33 tough yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. He also had a catch for two yards.

Chidobe Awuzie:

While Davante Adams had a huge game, only about 80 yards came from coverage supplied by Awuzie. The veteran corner had an interception and six total tackles.

Brandon Wilson:

It was finally a day for some nice special teams returns. Wilson had four kickoff returns that averaged 30 yards a pop. His 44-yarder was a nice one in a year that hasn’t had many big special teams plays.

Cincinnati lost a wild one against Green Bay, prompting a lot of questions about the viability of the 2021 team. They face a potentially-dangerous, albeit winless Detroit team as they attempt to rebound.

It’s been a tough week of regrouping for the Cincinnati Bengals. They lost a tough home matchup against Green Bay, wherein the game easily could have been theirs.

There are questions arising from the loss, ranging from Zac Taylor’s play calls to some of the decisions made by Joe Burrow. Meanwhile, the team is getting set to face a winless Detroit team that is starving for its first win. They’ve been oh-so-close, so this could be a trap game for the Bengals.

We talked about it all Wednesday night. Here’s a bit of what was on tap for discussion:

With the Green Bay contest being a “barometer game”, how did the Bengals fare and what are the takeaways in a close loss?

Zac Taylor had moments of questionable decisions, but he actually had a number of good play calls. Consistent execution, however, remains an issue.

Could D’Ante Smith play his way into starting on the offensive line permanently, should he get his first opportunity this week versus Detroit?

Is this a major trap game for the Bengals this weekend against the Lions?

Getting early momentum against Detroit is a major key this weekend.

And more!

No other free agent signing is giving the Bengals a bigger surplus in value than Spain.

The goal of free agency is to improve the roster, but that doesn’t always come with acquiring talent at the peak of their careers.

The mindset “what have you done for me lately” dominates NFL culture, and for good reason. But in a hard cap world, maximizing value is critical in building the best roster possible. You can target the top guys that require the most lucrative contracts or earliest draft picks, or you can bet on value with the plan of getting the most out of players who can be brought in with minimal resources.

When the latter path works out, they are the acquisitions that boost a general manager’s track record the most. That’s what appears to be happening with Quinton Spain and the Bengals.

Now 30 years old and playing in his seventh season, Spain was conceivably in the lowest point of his professional career this time last year. His 2020 season has been retold many a time; getting benched a few weeks into a three-year contract with the Buffalo Bills and subsequently getting cut is a bad beat. The Bengals picked him up because they needed him badly. They ended up needing him at three different positions, and the results were as predictable as you could imagine.

2021 was thought to act as a total reset for the Bengals’ offensive line. New coach, and new personnel. The whole shebang. They got the new (or old) coach in Frank Pollack. They got the new right tackle in Riley Reiff, and new right guard in Jackson Carman. But sandwiched in-between all those moves was the re-signing of Spain.

While his situation was not ideal last year, the most recent version of Spain did not leave many Bengals fans confident in his ability to start going forward. That he was the only veteran addition to a position the team needed to get right was even more concerning.

Five weeks into the new season, those concerns have been extinguished.

Jonah is tied with Tyron Smith for the least pressures given up, but Quinton Spain is the leader amongst left guards.
Spain has also only given up 1 single pressure in True Pass Sets (61 snaps).
Rodney Hudson is the ONLY lineman in the NFL yet to surrender a pressure in TPS.
— Goodberry (@JoeGoodberry) October 13, 2021

Spain has been exactly what Cincinnati needed him to be this year. Back at his natural position at left guard with a full offseason of preparation behind him, Mr. Undrafted has produced at a top-tier level in pass protection. The Bengals have only averaged about a dozen true pass plays a game so far, but Spain has been basically perfect protecting Joe Burrow on those drop backs.

In his latest start, Spain faced off against a variety of interior defensive linemen for the Green Bay Packers and turned in another clean performance. I broke down some notable reps from the Bengals’ left guard.

The difference a year can make is immense. Stability, continuity, and overall environment all seem to have impacted Spain in a positive way. He’s going on one year being with the franchise and around a lot of the same faces. He’s also been practicing and playing at the same position since he signed his one-year deal back in March. The transition to Pollack’s coaching and consistency with his scheme is evident as well.

There’s still 12 games to go, but Spain does not look done as a starting-caliber guard in this league. That’s great news for his not only the Bengals, but his agent as well. Cincinnati is getting this level of play for just over $1 million in total salary. If he continues to perform well, he could play his way into one final multi-year deal. And the Bengals would have first dibs on offering that.

For over a decade, the Bengals have been criticized for their penny-pinching ways. In reality, their goal has always been to maximize value, they’ve just been unsuccessful too many times, specifically when it comes to building an offensive line. When the entire NFL world was begging them to bring out the brinx truck for new blockers, they chose the same path they’ve always taken. This time, it just happens to be working.

But don’t expect Spain to be as affordable next Spring if he keeps this up.

Chase was the right pick for the Bengals.

Cincinnati Bengals fans spent the offseason debating whether the team should select Ja’Marr Chase or Penei Sewell with their 1st Round pick.

Five weeks into the season, that debate can be put to rest.

Yes, the Bengals still have a lot of work to do on their offensive line, but Chase is special. In fact, this weekend’s game, which was viewed by many as a matchup between a Hall of Famer and a rising star at the quarterback position, ended up being a battle between their top receivers.

Chase’s six receptions for 159 yards and a touchdown was impressive, but was overshadowed by his counterpart Davante Adams who had 206 yards and a touchdown on 11 receptions.

Adams’ talent is well known, so let’s take a look at how the young up-and-coming receiver performed in this weekend’s game.

The Bengals needed to add speed at the wide receiver position and Chase brought that, but it’s not just about running vertical routes (don’t worry, we’ll get to that), it’s also about turning short passes into bigger gains.

Here, Chase runs a short hitch route, releasing to the inside. Joe Burrow puts the ball to his outside, which gives Chase the opportunity to turn away from the defender and turn the short pass into a big gain.

He did not have enough room to turn this slant into a big gain, but his speed helped him get in front of the safety, who was breaking from the deep zone. This allowed him to gain four more yards and nearly pick up the first down.

It’s the safeties job to fill on the slant. Chase’s speed made the safety’s angle wrong. That’s how you judge speed. When the defense takes the right angles, but still can’t make the play, you are looking at true speed.

No we get to the deep ball, but like many things in football, it is much more complex than that.

Outside vertical routes, or fade routes, adjust to the defense. It’s important that the quarterback and the receiver be on the same page. Chase’s experience with Burrow is a big reason why he has had so much success so early in his career. They see defenses the same way.

Here, the defender is playing on top of Chase, so Burrow puts the ball behind him. Chase turns inside right on cue and makes an excellent catch.

On this play, Chase torches the cornerback off the line of scrimmage. This is it! This is the opportunity they have been waiting for, where Burrow can hit Chase in stride for a long touchdown! Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen.

Burrow can’t step into his throw because of the blitz, and as a result he doesn’t have much power on the throw. Chase has to slow down to try to make the catch, which allows the cornerback to catch up and make a play on the ball.

Of course a fade route, or any other route for that matter can also turn into the scramble drill.

In this clip, Chase runs the deep route, and it looks like Burrow is looking to hit him on another back shoulder throw. However, a Packers’ pass rush shows up in front of Burrow, which gives Burrow pause. Burrow works back to his right, and Chase takes off all the way across the field. The cornerback pursues him and makes a valiant but doomed effort to undercut the throw. Burrow and Chase connect for a 70-yard score.

This is the type of Burrow magic we expected when they drafted him.

Chase was an amazing pick, because he is exactly what they needed to unlock Burrow’s full potential. He is a front-runner for Rookie of the Year and could be a special player in this league for years to come. He was the perfect pick for this team.

Ja’Marr Chase at least had another incredible game.

Days like Sunday are why the NFL is America’s most popular form of entertainment. When wild and unprecedented events occur, we get to bask in the drama and cope with the aftermath. It’s the players and coaches that have to make sense of what transpired.

Chase has been ready for this attention since the Bengals made him the fifth pick in the NFL Draft. But even the biggest of homers couldn’t have assured themselves of this kind of start.

Against the Packers, Chase reeled in six of his seven catchable targets for 159 yards and a touchdown. Just another day at the office. Granted, Chase and his teammates were running routes against a Jaire Alexander-less Packers’ secondary, but go back to the 2019 SEC Championship game. Chase was “held” to three receptions, 41 yards, and a score against the Georgia Bulldogs. He was going up against cornerback Eric Stokes in that game. Nearly two years later, Chase had about half of his production against the rookie cornerback.

With 50 seconds remaining in the first half, Stokes started to carry a slot fade route from Chase before passing him off to safety Darnell Savage. But just like they did in college, Chase and Joe Burrow created magic on a broken play. For the third time in five weeks, the two connected for a long touchdown during their pre-halftime two-minute drill.

Like clockwork, Chase was ready to give the Bengals a boost before heading into the locker room. In an offense that’s riddled with inconsistencies, this has been a welcomed constant.

Three of Chase’s six receptions came on vertical routes, and head coach Zac Taylor wanted a few more as well. Burrow couldn’t get the ball to Chase on a couple of missed deep shots, but the duo hooked up for a couple of late-game fade routes, both coming on third down.

This week feels like the right time to revive this talking point, which got a lot of backlash during the Spring. Many denied that an elite receiver can be just as valuable as an elite offensive tackle. What more does Chase have to do to convince that crowd if he hasn’t already? Not only do we have his play to support data that’s already been analyzed, the anecdotal evidence is strong from the opposition as well.

Davante Adams went off in this game. That’s expected, because he’s Davante Adams. He had a tough matchup with Chidobe Awuzie and still obliterated the Bengals’ secondary for 206 yards on 11 receptions. Green Bay gained an average of 0.48 Expected Points Added every time they targeted him. For reference, the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense is averaging just under 0.20 EPA per play, and they lead the NFL in that category.

How was he able to do what he did despite the Packers playing their third-string left tackle? The very best receivers can add immense value to their offenses without relying on the variable of pass-protection from individuals.

The value that Chase has added to this offense is so palpable, you have to wonder what their record would be without him. He’s one of only seven starting receivers who’s averaging three yards per route run. Whether or not you want to label him elite just yet, he’s playing and instituting his will at that level.

For a more in-depth look at Chase’s performance, be sure to check out Matt Minich’s Film Room piece this week!

Cam Sample took advantage of a suspect Packers’ offensive line Sunday and had arguably his best game with the Bengals. On just 12 pass-rushing snaps, Sample generated four pressures and a hit on Aaron Rodgers.

What’s promising is that Sample spent half of his time either inside or on the nose of the right tackle. His ability as an interior rusher is where he’s most valuable right now, and they need to utilize that going forward. Ideally, when Khalid Kareem returns from Injured Reserve, he can take Sample’s snaps at edge and Sample can go to work from the interior full-time on passing downs.

Finally, is it D’Ante Smith time? Jackson Carman landed on the COVID-19 list Monday, which puts his status for next Sunday in doubt. Smith will start for Carman at right guard if Carman does not get cleared to play in time.

Stock Stagnating

This really felt like the game Chris Evans was going to be more involved. Joe Mixon was limited to just 19 snaps, and instead of an equal distribution of workload between Samaje Perine and Evans, it was Perine who got the vast majority of opportunities.

Evans finished with just seven snaps (a season-high, believe it or not), and two receptions on two targets that went for 15 yards. Taylor and offensive coordinator Brian Callahan have been very consistent with Evans’ usage thus far. If it didn’t change this week, it’s hard to see it changing any time soon.

Stock Falling

They say it’s a game on inches. You just hate it when that pertains to kickers.

What’s there to analyze with Evan McPherson? A doink off of the right post from 57 yards and hitting the flag connected to the left post from 49 yards is a tough deal. Wind was definitely a factor, as I’m sure Mason Crosby would agree, and that likely prevented Taylor from sending McPherson out earlier in the game when they were on the doorstep of field goal range. Kevin Huber punted from the Packers’ 41-yard line and 40-yard line, respectively, before the fourth quarter.

Per Elias Sports Bureau, Sunday’s game was the first in modern NFL history to feature five missed potential game-winning field goals. McPherson went literal blow for blow with Crosby; the veteran just had more chances to not miss.

Confidence in McPherson shouldn’t waver at this point, but only those who’ve experienced the pitfalls of kicking can speak for working out of those funks. Considering the Detroit Lions’ luck when it come can’t buy a missed field goal from their opponents this year, so it looks like McPherson has a strong bounce-back opportunity next week. At least he’ll wait to celebrate before the referees put their arms above their heads.

His COVID status aside, Jackson Carman didn’t play very well, specifically in pass protection. Pro Football Focus charged him with six pressures allowed, four of which came on true pass sets. It’s a blemish on his young resume, and he may not be able to make up for it next week against the weak interior defensive line the Lions are rostering. If Smith plays well in his place, you have to wonder what that means for the second-round pick.
