How is the o-line holding up heading down the stretch of the regular season?

The Cincinnati Bengals extend their winning streak to SIX games and improve to 10-4 on the year.

The front five really impressed this week as they post their third-highest grade as a group, on the season. The group also posted their second best grades on the season in both run blocking AND pass protection.

Overall, this was as good of a game as they’ve had this season.

Overall

The Bengals’ OL looked GREAT in Tampa Bay on Sunday. The group needed a bounce back game coming off one of their worst games of the season against the Browns the week prior, and they got it. Having a “get right” game going into their final road game of the regular season and then two games against playoff teams is big, momentum wise, for this group. While the group has been up and down throughout the year, I’m hoping for a nice hot streak to end the year!

Alex Cappa

Cappa needed a bounce back game in a bad way after posting a personal season low grade of 53.91 last week against the Browns. Being the top performer in both categories (pass protection and run blocking) was a sign that he was ready to get back to normal. He seemed to really be under control this week and didn’t seem to panic much, even against stunts or exotic looks. I couldn’t ask for much more than he delivered in one of his best performances in Cincinnati.

Ted Karras

At this point in his short career in Cincinnati, Karras has set the expectation that he should grade in the top two of the group every week. As per usual, here he sits! While he didn’t do much to jump off the screen this week, he is a solid performer and executes his job very consistently. He is the best pass protector of the group (and it’s not necessarily close), but he is still leaving much to be desired in the run game. Overall, still a great pickup for the Bengals and I’m excited to keep watching him!

La’el Collins

It’s always good to see Collins sneak into the top 3 every now and then! This week, it was his run blocking that pulled him up as he tied for the second-best grade of the group in that category. However, he is still leaving a lot to be desired when it comes to pass protection. I think this back injury has set him back, athletically, for the rest of his career. It’s good to see him slowly improving in the run game. Hopefully, we get to see some of his trademark nastiness before he’s out.

Cordell Volson

Volson is consistently in the middle of the pack and honestly, I’m okay with that. Looking back at the expectations I had coming into this year (especially at that position), I’ve been pleasantly surprised! He really seemed to struggle in pass protection this week, but held his own enough to earn a solid grade. I think his over-aggressive style of play hurts him in that area. I need to see more out of him in the run game, as well. He showed a lot of good traits and flashes early in this season, but it looks like he’s taken a lot of care to get more patient and controlled. A worthwhile tradeoff, for the long term. He’s still got a ways to go, but I’m still happy with the rookie!

Jonah Williams

I was surprised to see that Williams ended up at the bottom of this list. However, he posted an above (personal) average grade and was the second highest graded pass protector of the group. That’s the area where people have had the most concerns with him and I feel confident that he’s back to form. It looks like he’s relatively back to full health and if the run scheme gets back to where it’s been, he’ll be fine.

Pass Protection

Overall, there can’t be too many complaints when the group is a couple of points off of posting a new season high pass protection grade. Collins’ issues are still there and painfully obvious at times. However, he’s still getting the job done and luckily, he’s not on Burrow’s blind side. Karras has performed below his average mark over the last couple of weeks, but I’m not worried about a slid. After a three game stretch of 87%+ grades in that category, a cool off is to be expected. Seeing Williams back in the 80s is a great sign coming down the stretch, as well.

Run Blocking

It looked like the Bengals got away from the gap scheme run game that has been working so well for them lately against the Bucs, but even so, the group still posted their second-best grade on the season in that category. It was good to see Collins back in the 70s, as I believe he was slated as one of the better run blockers of the group coming into the season. Williams had an uncharacteristically bad game run blocking which was surprising considering that he’s one of the better zone blockers, in my opinion. Volson also graded out surprisingly low in this area compared to the rest of his season. Hopefully, the Bengals get back to the gap based scheme next week, as that seems to work the best.

Grades

Cincinnati’s right guard is thriving under the radar.

Alex Cappa had options to leave central Florida this past offseason, and the choice to stay put was pretty appealing as well.

For the second year in a row, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were trying to run it back with the core of their team. Chris Godwin, Leonard Fournette, Giovani Bernard, Carlton Davis, and Ryan Jensen were all retained after Tom Brady dropped a bombshell that he would not retire and play a 23rd season in the NFL.

Brady managed to convince Jensen to stick around as his center. He already lost left guard Ali Marpet to a sudden retirement out of the blue, so losing his right guard in Cappa would hurt even more. He reportedly called Cappa after securing Jensen to make his pitch.

Cappa chose the Cincinnati Bengals instead.

Seconds after the legal tampering period began, Cappa agreed to the largest unrestricted free agent contract the Bengals have ever offered an offensive lineman. The symbolism behind inking a right guard to a major deal five years after letting Kevin Zeitler chase a bag was enough on its own. Watching Joe Burrow succumb to defenders running free in the Super Bowl was more than enough to get the Bengals to open the check book for real.

While the financials were enlarged to reel in Cappa, the philosophy remained the same. Cincinnati doesn’t truly drop the bag for anyone they don’t believe is still ascending. This has applied since their great free agency awakening in 2020, and the only real miss has been Trae Waynes due to injury. The shared vision between head coach Zac Taylor and director of player personnel Duke Tobin has led to a locker room full of players who love ball in the midst of their primes.

Cappa has truly been the best version of himself since joining the Bengals. Per Pro Football Focus, he’s posted career-highs in both pass blocking grade (71.5) and pass blocking efficiency (98.3) this season, and has been a top-20 run blocking guard since Week 5, the inflection point when the Bengals made alterations to better their scheme.

Perhaps it’s taken this long for us to profile Cappa because he’s been right at where expectations placed him. If he was falling below consistently, he would be a more pressing topic, and the same would apply if he was racking up Pro Bowl votes.

Thus is the life of an o-lineman; you never get attention for doing your job.

The development Cappa underwent blocking for Brady has molded him into arguably the best interior lineman the Bengals have added since Zeitler’s departure, and he showed why in his return to Tampa on Sunday. Check out some of Cappa’s most notable reps in the video below.

Every active rookie for Cincinnati was a part of the team’s second half comeback vs. Tampa Bay.

Experience usually trumps inexperience in the NFL. So when half of a defensive backfield is comprised of rookies against a competent 45-year old quarterback, that can lead to trouble.

It did for the Cincinnati Bengals, until it didn’t.

Injuries have forced the hands of the now 10-4 Bengals to throw every rookie they have into the fire, and instead of wrecking the ship, the first-year players are keeping it afloat. That’s the sign of good coaching, and even better evaluation from the personnel department.

Everyone within the Bengals’ organization got to see all their youngins perform in Sunday’s come-from-behind victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Here’s what they witnessed.

Dax Hill

Back at his old position from his Michigan days, a former Michigan quarterback tested him right out the gate. Tom Brady’s first completion went to Chris Godwin on a drive route against Hill for a modest gain. Hill would get used to trailing Godwin for most of the afternoon, and do it at a solid level.

The one time Hill seemed to get “beat” was late in the second quarter. While defending Godwin in the slot, Hill allowed an inside release, knowing he had help over the middle of the field. Godwin came out of his break perfectly, and Brady held the ball long enough for separation to be had.

The 15-yard reception was by far the longest of four receptions Hill was in coverage against. There was also a pass interference Mike Evans drew against him later on, but it was simply a matter of not turning his head back to the ball.

Coverage is just half the game for slot defenders. Anyone who knows Mike Hilton’s game sees the value of filling run fits like a 2000s linebacker. Hill showcased some of that aggression in this game as well.

Cam Taylor-Britt

Much like Hill, the beginning of the game went completely fine for Taylor-Britt. The cornerback had a very clean first 15 minutes of play. He even broke up a slant to Evans, which is crazy hard to do.

That dropped interception from Jessie Bates? Taylor-Britt had that route from Russell Gage covered anyways. This led to a field goal from inside the five-yard line.

Matt’s right, he’ll learn, but it was not the only time Taylor-Britt was caught with subpar footwork. On the play he injured his shoulder, Taylor-Britt opened his hips to the outside expecting an out-breaker, and tripped while closing down on the curl route. The awkward tackle seemed to be what caused the injury.

Per usual, the highs were high, and the lows were lows for the rookie corner. This was also the first week since Taylor-Britt’s midseason debut that Hill out-snapped him due to the injury. He stated in the locker room that he expects to play Saturday, and was a limited participant in Tuesday’s walkthrough.

Allan George

The guy who replaced Taylor-Britt was none other than George, who appeared in his second-career game.

Brady sought after him the third and final drive he was in for. This was the second of three passes Brady threw into his coverage. George does a good job mirroring the route, and had he closed down at the catch point, he may’ve gotten his first-career interception.

The Bengals have to be smart about how they handle George on the practice squad. They can only elevate him once more to the active roster this season. Since Mike Hilton and Jalen Davis appear to be on track to returning soon, they may not need to elevate George again. ext.

Cordell Volson

The Bengals’ longest run of the night was sparked because of Volson, although not in a positive way. Volson misplayed a tackle-end twist from the Bucs that generated a pressure on Joe Burrow, and Burrow scampered out of the pocket for a gain of 10 and a first down on the offense’s first drive of the second half.

That was just about the lone hiccup Volson ran into Sunday. Without Vita Vea, the Bucs had little interior pass-rush against a now formidable interior offensive line for the Bengals. Volson is currently 25th among 50 qualifying starting guards this year in Pro Football Focus’ pass blocking efficiency metric on true pass sets.

Jeff Gunter

Gunter’s three-week streak of being inactive was broken on Sunday as the Bengals needed every edge defender they had available. Gunter suited up due to Trey Hendrickson’s wrist injury, but he entered the game after Sam Hubbard’s calf injury took the veteran off the field. The seventh-round pick didn’t register any pressures in his 10 pass-rushing snaps as, but he held his own on the seven snaps he had against the run as Tampa Bay couldn’t muster much of anything in the second half.

Expect Gunter to be involved in the rotation at defensive end with Sam Hubbard likely out for two weeks or more.

Zach Carter

Alex Cappa and Mitchell Wilcox weren’t the only Bengals to experience homecomings in Tampa. Carter was born and raised there until he left upstate for college at the University of Florida. He played 28 snaps as the defensive line had to get creative without both Hendrickson and Hubbard.

The Bengals’ first-round pick got his first NFL start in Tampa.

Fans have been waiting to see Cincinnati Bengals first-round pick Dax Hill get some more action, and it came in an unexpected form this weekend against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Hill filled in for Jessie Bates all preseason, and it’s assumed that he will become Bates’ permanent replacement when the veteran free safety cashes in on free agency this offseason.

Lou Anarumo was comfortable waiting until next year. The Bengals’ defensive coordinator was quite vociferous earlier this season about not wanting to play a rookie defensive back too soon.

Unfortunately, injuries to both Mike Hilton and Jalen Davis forced his hand, and Hill got the start at nickel corner this weekend.

Hill’s biggest splashes came in run defense, which bodes well for his future as a safety. Although Hill is likely to be deemed the “free safety,” Anarumo loves versatility and is likely to see a lot of action close to the line of scrimmage, just like Vonn Bell.

In man coverage, Hill battled all day. He had some good reps, but he also had a few missteps and was a little more physical than he is likely to get away with on a regular basis. Just like Cam Taylor-Britt, he will have a very sharp learning curve as he adjusts to the speed of the NFL game.

In this clip, he does a good job of staying with the receiver, despite being basically picked twice by his own teammates. It should be Bell who makes this play, but Hill shows some tenacity as he sticks with the receiver and makes the tackle. It is a win for the offense, but a good individual effort by Hill.

Hill showed some promise but has a long way to go in coverage. Remember that Anarumo talked earlier in the year about building confidence in young defensive backs. He references his own experience coaching a rookie Xavien Howard and said that he wasn’t Xavien Howard at the beginning of the year.

Hill, like Taylor-Britt, has room to grow, but he showed potential in his first NFL start.

The Cincinnati Bengals are on a six-game winning streak after pulling off a big win over the Buccaneers on Sunday. There were many great plays and performances in the huge comeback win.

Cast your vote and sound off on your winners for the Bengals’ Week 15 awards!

Most Valuable Player

Joe Burrow:

The Bengals’ quarterback played highly-efficient football, tossing four touchdown passes on 69 percent passing. He hit seven different receivers with four different ones catching touchdown grabs.

Alex Cappa:

The former Bucs guard had quite the homecoming on Sunday, logging the best PFF score by a Bengals offensive lineman (69.7). He also had an 87.8 pass blocking grade by the metric.

Ja’Marr Chase:

The star receiver led the team with 60 yards on seven catches with a late score. He had his work cut out for him against Carlton Davis, who played admirably, but two other missed interference calls would have likely boosted the numbers for “Uno” in this one.

Evan McPherson:

The Bengals’ kicker was perfect on the day, accounting for eight points (two field goals, two extra points). His two field goals were extremely clutch to keep the Bengals alive, as they were the first points the team put on the board to kickstart their furious comeback.

Logan Wilson:

The active linebacker was everywhere on Sunday logging a ho-hum 15 tackles (where’s the sarcasm font?). He also had a sack and forced a fumble of Tom Brady as a part of the furious comeback.

Germaine Pratt:

Not to be outdone by Wilson, Pratt had one of the plays of the game with his tumbling interception. He added in nine total tackles on the day.

Unsung Hero of the Week

Tyler Boyd:

Chase got most of the attention, but Boyd gutted through a pretty gruesome finger injury last week to come back against the Bucs and contribute in a big way. He had five catches on as many targets, for 35 yards and a score.

Tee Higgins:

The other member of “The Big Three” had his moments on Sunday, too. While he had a drop (with a funny Twitter exchange occurring with his mother about it), Higgins had a touchdown reception along with four others totaling 33 yards.

Mitchell Wilcox:

If you’re a veteran of CJ, you’ll know that part of the criteria for this award is in stepping up for others in the wake of injury or ineffectiveness. Wilcox’s position group has been decimated by injury, but he made a big impact on Sunday.

He had the dagger touchdown reception in the fourth quarter, while accounting for two other receptions for 34 total yards. He also had a 76.1 pass blocking score for the day, per PFF.

Tre Flowers:

The versatile defensive back played well on Sunday, logging a 90.0 PFF pass coverage grade. His diving interception led to a Bengals touchdown, greatly helping the comeback effort.

B.J. Hill:

The big interior lineman often gets overlooked because of the stellar play of D.J. Reader next to him, but he’s had some nice moments this year. Hill was the highest-graded Bengals defender against Tampa Bay, logging an 82.0 overall PFF defensive grade. He had seven total tackles.

Play of the Game

Tre Flowers’ third quarter interception:

Cincinnati was clinging to life after two field goals made the game 17-6. Flowers provided some heroics early in the second half with a diving interception. The ensuing drive led to a touchdown to put the comeback into overdrive.

The afternoon started off hideous, but it ended beautifully.

Another week, another trademark win for the Cincinnati Bengals.

This time, it was Tom Brady who bore the brunt of the orange and black, letting go of a big 17-point lead.

Here are the best and worst facets of the Bengals’ victory over the Buccaneers in Week 15.

The good

17-0 is the new 28-3:

Matt Ryan’s solid pro career is marred by his Falcons’ inexplicable Super Bowl loss to Tom Brady’s Patriots. The very simple “28-3” is often used as a snapback from New England fans when if they happen to catch flak on the rare occasions.

But, on Sunday, Joe Burrow gave Brady a bit of a taste of his own medicine. Using short fields thanks to four turnovers by the defense, Burrow tossed four second-half touchdowns to unleash an avalanche of a comeback on the G.O.A.T.

Of course, it wasn’t as high-profile of a game as Super Bowl LI, but it did end an unbelievable stat Brady held for his career. Before the Bengals came pouncing back, Twelve was 89-0 when holding a 17-point lead in any pro contest.

A metaphorical passing of the baton:

Speaking of which, one of the storylines coming from this clash was Burrow vs. Brady and how Cincinnati’s elite quarterback exhibits quite of few similarities to that of the G.O.A.T. Initially, it looked like the old dog was going to put the youngin’ in his proper place and have a symbolic “not yet” type of game.

Instead, Burrow marched his team to a win, not just grabbing the metaphorical baton from Brady, but rather tearing it from the G.O.A.T.’s vice-grip on it. Maybe we’re being a bit dramatic, but this was a trademark win, and it did show signs of the two quarterbacks’ careers trending in different directions...for now.

Halftime adjustments:

Some people believe this is an actual thing that exists, while others scoff at the notion that big changes can be made in a 13-minute window. This becomes especially puzzling when one factors in the team preparing an entire week (sometimes longer) with specific game plans of attack towards the opposition.

Still, the prevailing opinion is that halftime adjustments exist to some degree, just likely not to the level of tossing out an entire week’s game plan and starting from scratch. Focusing in on what has worked to the halfway point and what the opposition has showed a team definitely figures into the next two quarters.

When you look at the Bengals this year, particularly on defense, they just hit another gear. They haven’t been allowing yards or scores and have kept the team in games throughout the whole year. Even Tee Higgins, who we recently spoke with on our podcast, noted how the offense has been attempting to respond to all of the opportunities the defense has provided them this year.

This past Sunday was case in point, as evidenced by the four turnovers and subsequent offensive touchdowns in the final two quarters. It was especially impressive, given how the Bengals plodded through the first half.

Speaking of the defense...:

When you get Tom Brady to commit four turnovers in any game, that’s an incredible feat. It’s seems like a nearly-impossible thought when Brady’s Bucs had their backs against the wall with playoff implications and having the opposition on his home turf.

Yet, there’s Lou Anarumo for you. Brady sliced-and-diced the Bengals in the first two quarters, but Anarumo’s group swarmed and frustrated Tampa Bay’s offense, even with more high-profile players leaving the contest with injury.

The Buccaneers were held to under four yards per carry running the ball, while being held to just a lone, garbage time touchdown in the final two quarters. Did we mention Cincinnati’s defense forced four turnovers?

Some elements of the offensive line:

Even though La’el Collins struggled with Joe Tryon-Shoyinka on Sunday (a 47.8 PFF pass block grade), the line put up some respectable scores across the board. Jonah Williams had a 79.5 PFF pass block score, while Alex Cappa giving a strong performance against his former team with a 68.6 overall score and 87.8 on the pass block front.

Ted Karras and Cordell Volson were also in the high 60s in PFF pass block metrics, while both running backs and Mitchell Wilcox all scoring well in supplemental pass protection.

Cordell Volson taking that man's soul pic.twitter.com/ibZg8nFwrA
— Mike (@bengals_sans) December 20, 2022

Special teams superheroes:

Evan McPherson was perfect on the day with eight total points (two field goals, two extra points), while Drue Chrisman had two of his four punts land inside the Bucs’ 20-yard line. One of those was a “coffin corner” kick that was placed at the Tampa Bay 2-yard line and led to a Buccaneers three-and-out.

Trayveon Williams added in a nice little 28-yard kick return and the unit was all over the Giovani Bernard fake punt debacle. Darrin Simmons’ group also allowed just 16 yards per kickoff return and seven yards per punt return on Sunday.

The bad

The run game:

Sometimes every single element in a game just doesn’t click. Such is the case with the run game against Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers put forth their best defensive effort of the year on Sunday, as the Bengals ran for just 53 yards on 21 carries (2.5 yards per carry).

It was especially troubling that Burrow had the long gain of the day and that it was only 10 yards. While Joe Mixon participated relatively well in the passing game (five catches for 33 yards), he and Samaje Perine combined for just 45 rushing yards on the day.

Short fields and effective passing caused some of the statistical shortcomings, but there wasn’t much there for them, either.

Predictably, the pass rush struggled a bit:

Brady was hit seven times and the Bengals got to him once, but that was on a Logan Wilson blitz. The good news was that that play was disastrous for Tampa Bay, netting a fumble recovery for Cincinnati.

Still, with Trey Hendrickson out nursing a wrist injury and Sam Hubbard leaving early because of a calf issue, the young rotational players behind them couldn’t find consistent pressure routes. That will need to improve in the next few weeks, as it sounds like both of the star edge defenders will be out to varying degrees of time.

The ugly

The first half:

Cincinnati’s output in the first two quarters was borderline unwatchable football. On defense, Mike Evans was having a field day, netting more receiving yards by himself than the Bengals’ offense had altogether in the first half. It was vintage Brady early on, as he sliced-and-diced the short and intermediate areas of the field to get a 17-3 advantage at the midway point.

On offense, nothing much was working. Cincinnati moved the ball a little bit on their initial drive, only to see it end with one of those frustrating tipped passes for an interception. The Bengals didn’t do anything until hurry-up mode right before the half netted three points.

It all worked out in their favor in the end, but this was the formula for a very familiar Brady outcome. While the Bengals seem to continually overcome these slow starts against elite teams and quarterbacks, they will need to buck this trend with the postseason on the horizon.

The injuries...again:

Seeing more starters go down on defense again was definitely cringe-worthy. Losing Hubbard for a while is not good news, as he is a great all-around edge defender playing well against both the pass and run.

Cam Taylor-Britt sounds like he may be back this week after a scary-looking shoulder issue, but Cincinnati can’t afford much attrition at that position, either. Cincinnati is admirably finding ways to overcome these injuries and win games, but they need to get healthy with the postseason around the corner.

The Bengals hang tough after getting down big to Tom Brady and the Bucs.

The Cincinnati Bengals offensive line is officially going through a slump, in my book.

After handing them sub 70 grades in four of the last five games (not including Tampa, which I’d expect also falls in that range), I’ve been hoping to see them bounce back, and they have not.

The unit struggled last week against a formidable pass rush, but surprisingly also struggled against a weaker interior defensive line. This week against Tampa Bay, we saw much of the same. La’el Collins seems to be regressing at this point and struggles with most outside pressure.

It also doesn’t help that his neighbor, Alex Cappa, seems to be going through his own issues. He is having a hard time handling both speed and power in pass protection.

The Bengals were only able to muster 45 yards out of 18 (non-QB) rushing attempts. While I’m sure there will be a conversation had about Perine’s 3.4 yards per carry vs Mixon’s 1.9, it’s hard to get any production in the run game when there isn’t anywhere to go.

It looked like the backs were running into clogged lanes when they weren’t getting hit in the backfield. Run blocking has been an issue with the front five all season, but I expected more against a Bucs interior that was missing Vita Vea.

Pass Protection

Burrow was sacked twice (not including the massive 26 yard sack that was negated by a defensive penalty) on Sunday. While he only went down a couple of times, credit has to be given to Burrow’s ability to get the ball out quick. He had the fastest time to throw of the Week 15 with an average of 2.3 seconds (per Next Gen Stats).

Getting back to the quick game (and sticking with it) has been an obvious improvement for this offense and takes a significant amount of pressure off of the front five. Once again, not a week to write home about, but not a terrible week of protection for this unit.

Run Blocking

My biggest questions/concerns about the Bengals’ run game against Tampa Bay aren’t even focused on the offensive line. I am curious about why the game plan was to attack the outside edges of the Bucs’ defense, especially with Vea inactive. The runs inside looked much more effective, not to mention that’s the area of the run game that has proven to be better with this offensive line.

I’m glad they’re back to running a decent amount of RPOs in order to take some heat off of Burrow and take advantage of easy opportunities. Overall, I’m still optimistic about this Bengals rushing attack, but keep it in between the tackles...

Final Thoughts

Overall, not an impressive game from the offensive line. However, this team is winning through adversity with mediocre line play. I’m excited to see what can happen when this unit gets back in a groove like they were through the middle of the season.

It’s good to be at a point where I can be let down by this group, as weird as it sounds. The first sign of a raised expectation is disappointment. A year ago, this would’ve been a more than impressive performance from the Bengals’ OL.

Help wanted?

The Cincinnati Bengals are hurting at defensive end. With Week 14 taking out Trey Hendrickson with a broken wrist, Week 15 claimed another pass rusher, as Sam Hubbard expected to miss time with a calf injury.

With the top-two players at the position out for multiple weeks, the Bengals could look outside the building for help. While they like Joseph Ossai and Cam Sample, a pass rush rotation is important, and they may just need bodies at this point.

Here are some free agent options the Bengals could consider.

Devon Kennard: Kennard may be the most prepared to play immediate snaps out of available rushers. Having played for the Arizona Cardinals and Baltimore Ravens this season, Kennard should still be relatively close to in playing shape. He hasn’t registered a sack in seven games played this season, but could be depth to take a snap or two to get another player a breather.

At 34 years old, McPhee could have a chance to join a contending team for a postseason run and shouldn’t demand much in terms of a contract for the final three games of the season. McPhee hasn’t played this season, so conditioning could be an issue if the team is looking for someone to take snaps immediately.

Everson Griffen: Perhaps the most accomplished player on this list, Griffen has registered 85.5 sacks in 11 seasons. Another 34-year-old free agent could have similar motivation to McPhee to join a team headed to the postseason. Griffen also hasn’t played a down this season, so the team would more than likely bring him in for a workout before any contract talks began. Depending on how he’s been working out while not on a team, a Griffen signing could be a late-season move that pays off in a big moment.

Terrell Lewis: Lewis has some potential at only 24 years old, with six sacks to his name through 30 career games played. With Ossai and co. expected to carry the weight of the pass rush, Lewis could be an addition who is just asked to be there in case of absolute emergency. The Los Angeles Rams thought enough of him to take him in the third round, so maybe there is some untapped potential with Lewis.

Benson Mayowa: Mayowa has shown flashes in his nine-year career, but has struggled with consistency. At 31 years old, Mayowa should still have a few solid years left in him, although the Bengals may just be looking for a handful of games. As we work through the list of available pass rushers, Mayowa is on the lower end.

Other notable names:

Noah Spence

Alex Okafor

Dee Ford

Kyler Fackrell

Nate Orchard

Cassius Marsh

To be honest, you very well might see the Bengals stick with players who are already in the building. Practice squad elevations and increased roles for players lower on the depth chart are more likely than not. Most of the above-mentioned guys have been out of football long enough that it would probably take several weeks to get them up to speed.

With that said, there are a few decent options if the Bengals decide to seek help outside of their locker room.
