Bengals running back Brian Leonard is listed as doubtful for Cincinnati's division game against the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday Night, according to the team's injury report.

Yes. It was expected.

Missing three practices this week with a rib injury suffered against the Cleveland Browns is a clear indication of Leonard's chances as Marvin Lewis rarely allows players to play after missing a full week of practice. Doubtful leaves a minimal chance, but it's extremely unlikely. Or dare I say, doubtful.

Cedric Peerman will backup BenJarvus Green-Ellis and if both backs are out for one reason or another, Marvin Lewis told reporters that fullback Chris Pressley could get the call.

After leaving the game against the Tennessee Titans, starting center Maurkice Pouncey missed Wednesday's practice and "practiced lightly the past two days", writes Gerry Dulac with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. According to the team's official team report, Pouncey is currently listed as Questionable for this weekend's game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

However strong safety Troy Polamalu, offensive tackle Marcus Gilbert, running backs Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman and linebacker Chris Carter have been listed as OUT on the team's official injury report.

According to Gerry Dulac with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger "practiced with no worries" on Friday after suffering an ankle sprain during Thursday's practice.

Though there really wasn't ever any doubt, he'll start Sunday's game against the Bengals.

However, as we've mentioned in other posts, running backs Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman are out with Jonathan Dwyer expected to get the start.

Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis told reporters on Friday that if Brian Leonard can't go, then Chris Pressley can be the team's third running back.

With Brian Leonard missing three practices this week and historical evidence that Cincinnati rarely plays a player missing an entire week worth of practice, it's very probable that Leonard won't play against the Pittsburgh Steelers this weekend. In that scenario the Bengals have two active running backs heading into Sunday with a struggling starter in BenJarvus Green-Ellis and special teams ace Cedric Peerman.

Not what you'd call encouraging.

Some speculated that rookie Dan Herron could be called up to the practice squad. However offensive coordinator Jay Gruden said nearly two weeks ago, when Bernard Scott suffered a season-ending injury, that Herron is still developing with "a ways to go."

So will the Bengals sign someone or head into Sunday's game with only two running backs.

Head coach Marvin Lewis told reporters on Friday that if they need someone to carry the football, a third running back if Green-Ellis and Peerman are unavailable, then fullback Chris Pressley can be that guy.

Really.

Pressley currently has two carries in his four-year career, spanning 35 games, with his last attempt during the regular season finale against the Baltimore Ravens... in 2010. He has yet to gain a yard on the ground in his NFL career, though posted a six-yard gain against the Colts in the preseason... in 2009.

The PIttsburgh Steelers loss to the Tennessee Titans last weekend was costly.

UPDATE: According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Mendenhall and Redman won't play this weekend against the Cincinnati Bengals. Gerry Dulac writes that Jonathan Dwyer will get the start.

Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall made his much-anticipated season debut against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week Five after months of rehabilitation following an ACL tear against the Cleveland Browns during the 2011 regular season finale. Throughout Pittsburgh's win on Oct. 1, Mendenhall posted 68 yards rushing on 13 carries and 101 yards from scrimmage with a receiving touchdown against the Eagles, generating increasing hope that he'd help turn Pittsburgh's rushing offense around.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who prompted a mini-scare after rolling his ankle during Thursday's practice, said after the game that "our savior is back."

"He looked great. I don't know if he feels good, but I'm sure he does. We just hope he made it out of this game without any more injury."

He did. That game. The following week Mendenhall carried the football six times against the Tennessee Titans before exiting the game with an unrelated Achilles injury in the third quarter. And it doesn't appear that he'll be available this Sunday, after missing practice on Wednesday and Thursday.

Isaac Redman stepped into the starting role during Pittsburgh's first three games against the Broncos, Jets and Raiders. Currently Redman has generated such a low yard/rush average (2.5), BenJarvus Green-Ellis appears like the proverbial homerun hitter. Yet Redman suffered an ankle injury in the same game against Tennessee and has sat during practice on Wednesday and Thursday as well.

If neither Mendenhall nor Redman can go, the position would likely be a rotation of Jonathan Dwyer and Baron Batch, writes Neal Coolong with Behind the Steel Curtain.

Pittsburgh also suffered two key injuries on the offensive line against the Titans. Starting center Maurkice Pouncy left the game with an apparent knee injury, sat on Wednesday but returned in limited fashion on Thursday and offensive tackle Marcus Gilbert (ankle) isn't expected to play against the Bengals this weekend.

Bengals running back Brian Leonard completes the trifecta, sitting out during Friday's practice with a rib injury that he suffered against the Cleveland Browns last Sunday.

It's his third practice. Marvin Lewis rarely (if ever) allows players to play during a week after missing every practice that week; though Leonard wasn't expected to play anyway.

The bigger question is if the Bengals decide to go with two running backs or three this weekend against the Steelers. If they go with three, then they'll be forced to make a move, removing someone from the 53-man roster.

After the birth of his daughter Jaylynn, defensive end and/or linebacker (can we pick one?!) Dontay Moch returned to practice on Thursday.

On the other hand Armon Binns and Brian Leonard were both out, yet reportedly riding the bikes on the side. Leonard injured his ribs against the Cleveland Browns last weekend and no one knows why Binns was out. Though he was at the practice field so we're not going to immediately assume another pregnancy going into labor.
